Bye bye Thomas Schaaf
May. 15th, 2013 10:46 am![[identity profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/openid.png)
Thomas Schaaf, trainer legend at Werder Bremen, is quitting - for real!
and immediately!!! During the match against Nürnberg, Wolfgang Rolff and Matthias Hönerbach will coach.
http://www.werder.de/de/profis/news/44403.php
"As we had said, in the past few days we analysed our sporting development and came to the conclusion that we wanted to venture a new beginning. We thank Thomas for everything he brought to Werder Bremen in more than 40 years of belonging to the club as a player and coach. The club celebrated excellent sporting success with him and he characterised Werder," said manager Thomas Eichin in the name of his management colleagues Klaus Filbry and Klaus-Dieter Fischer. "After battling to avoid relegation, we were of the collective opinion that a consensual separation was the best for the planned new start." A successor has not yet been named.
Schaaf bid adieu to Werder Bremen. "I had an extraordinary time here, connected with a lot of positive experiences and great successes. I would like to thank everyone who accompanied me along the way and supported me. I wish Werder Bremen a successful future," said Schaaf after 14 years as head coach.
Schaaf had been the longest current serving Bundesliga coach as the Mannheim native took office on 9 May 1999 and guided Werder to the league and cup double in 2004. Altogether, the coach won three German Cup crowns (1999, 2004 and 2009) and turned Werder into a regular in international competition. Under his leadership, the Green-Whites took part in Champions League seasons and played four seasons in the UEFA Cup/Europa League. In total, he coached Bremen's professionals in 644 competitive matches.
Schaaf looks back on an impressive career along the Weser. He has been an SV Werder member since 1972, rising through the club's youth system until reaching the Bundesliga. Already before retiring from the game, Schaaf took over coaching the Green-Whites' youth teams and coached Bremen's second team after he stopped playing and took over as professional coach in 1999.
*sniff* I'll miss him, but after the last 3 seasons I think it's for the best.

TORSTEN FRINGS RETIRES
Torsten Frings, sidelined by a 2012 injury that he did not feel he could come back from, announced his retirement from professional football today in a press conference at BMO Field. All of Toronto cried ugly walrus tears for the most talented player to ever don our kit and for the loss of a true leader on the pitch.
For those who are inexplicably unfamiliar with the man, Frings spent the majority of his career in Germany with clubs like Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, and most notably Werder Bremen, before taking on a new challenge by moving to MLS and signing with Toronto FC in June 2011. Frings was capped 79 times for Deutschland and was part of the German national squads that participate din the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.
In the press conference (watch multiple videos here if you're able), Frings said he's been working on his coaching certifications and hopes to take on a coaching career (presumably at Bremen), in addition to working with TFC in some capacity from Germany.

Because it's the German National Team, the players also compete in other leagues. Mainly Bundesliga.

And in case there are newbies who don't know much about it, I figured, why don't we re-introduce them _fb'ers?
The only problem being... I very rarely get to see them play.
THEREFORE!
I want YOU GUYS to tell me (and the other new _fb'ers) all about your favorite team! Why they're your favorite team! Why Bayern Munich is really Gary Mother-effing Oak in disguise! Why Werder Bremen have such ridiculous final scores! Why someone planted a flag on a rival's stadium in the middle of winter! Why Mats Hummels and Benni Howedes have a ~forbidden, star-crossed lovers~ relationship!
And why Bundesliga deserves more attention
And newbies, or those who haven't followed this league, ASK QUESTIONS! I want a party thread, stat. Penguins can be invited.
eta: HERE is a 101 post for super-newbies.
HERE is an awesome post about Schalke, who made it to the semis last year in CL and the birthplace of a certain well-known Duckie.
HERE is a gorgeous post about Werder Bremen!
i'mma keep digging around here for you guys, i promise (seriously - no Bayern Munich intros? Although _fb has quite a few of the Bayern catalog posts...)

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.
The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."
The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.
With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.
Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.
Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

Wiese: Lehmann should be on a couch
Sep. 15th, 2010 08:32 pm![[identity profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/openid.png)

Werder's goalkeeper Tim Wiese reacted with radical words to the criticism given by his former peer Jens Lehmann after the 2:2 (1:2) of the Football-Bundesliga-Club in the Champions League against Tottenham Hotspur. "That man should be on a couch. Maybe someone would be able help him there. Commit him - best to an asylum", says the 28-years old to BILD.
The ex-national keeper Lehmann accused Wiese to partly be at fault of the first strike of the guests in the 12th minute, which Bremen's centre back Petri Pasanen scored by an own goal.
40-year old Lehmann said on TV before the the World Cup finals that Wiese has less potential than his national team competitors Manuel Neuer and René Adler.

Real Madrid's bid for Ozil turned down
Aug. 14th, 2010 09:47 am![[identity profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/openid.png)

MUNICH, Germany (Reuters) -- Werder Bremen turned down an offer from Real Madrid for Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil, the La Liga side's coach Jose Mourinho said on Friday.
"He's a great player and I'd be happy if he came to us but his coach (Thomas Schaaf) said no," Mourinho told reporters after watching his side beat Bayern Munich in a testimonial for former Germany captain Franz Beckenbauer.
The 21-year-old playmaker, part of an exciting World Cup team who finished third in this year's finals in South Africa, has been the target of several major European clubs.
"Now we have to see how it goes on from here. It would be great if he came to us," added Mourinho, hinting Real had not yet given up on the youngster, whose contract runs to 2011.
Mourinho's arrival at the Bernabeu has raised expectations that the Spanish league's big spenders can end Barcelona's two-year reign and Ozil's Germany team mate Sami Khedira has already joined the Madrid club since the World Cup.

Werder deny Barca agreement over Ozil
Werder Bremen director of sport Klaus Allofs insists reports of an agreement with Barcelona over Mesut Ozil are "nonsense".
Respected Spanish paper El Pais claimed on Tuesday that Barca had reached a tentative agreement with Werder to sign Ozil, 21, for €10 million, with the Germany international said to have prioritised a move to Camp Nou.
Allofs, though, claimed the rumours of an agreement with Barca were "nonsense" and said: "There is no agreement with Barca."
Werder's media director, Tino Polster, added: "There are no talks with and no offer from FC Barcelona."
When the player himself was asked about the move on Tuesday morning following training, he told Bild: "I know nothing. I have spoken to no one."
Despite the denials, Allofs has suggested that a deal to sell the player could progress in the near future.
Allofs told the Kreiszeitung Syke newspaper: "It is possible that there is now a bit of movement in the issue, but I am not running backwards and forwards to the fax machine or getting sweaty palms when I check my emails to see if maybe an offer has arrived."
Several top clubs in Europe, including Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid, are said to be interested in Ozil and Sir Alex Ferguson refused to rule out a bid at the weekend, saying "I don't know" when asked if he was hopeful of signing the player.
