HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Just to get us through this next football-less day where most of us will be surrounded by annoying family. Whether you're lonely, happy, need to moan etc we will might be here. Get to know each other, crack open a bottle of Mariah Carey's 'Butterfly' water, eat some cheese, give another poster a massage, live the extrovert life. Be nice to one another.

I hope the font doesn't break your computer. I do.

• Awana became internet sensation for back-heeled penalty
• 21-year-old killed travelling back from training

Theyab Awana

The United Arab Emirates winger Theyab Awana, who became an internet sensation when he scored a back-heeled penalty in the summer, has died following a car accident.

The country's football federation confirmed that the 21-year-old, who also played for the UAE club Bani Yas, was killed while travelling back from training in Al Ain to Abu Dhabi.

"I feel the loss of one of my family," the UAE's football president Mohammed Khalfan al-Rumaithi said. "I felt bitter tragedy. May the almighty bless him and may he rest in eternal peace."

Awana was considered a rising star in the UAE team, but his biggest claim to fame was the back-heeled penalty he scored in a 6-2 win over Lebanon in July, for which he was reprimanded by the then coach Srecko Katanec.

The Asian Football Confederation expressed its sympathy in a statement: "On behalf of AFC and the Asian football family, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the UAE football community, family and friends of Awana," the acting president Zhang Jilong said. "His demise at such a young age is a great loss to Asian and UAE football in particular."

The roads in the United Arab Emirates are among the region's most dangerous. A goalkeeper for the Under-23 side was badly injured in a car crash last year.

I remember when the penalty video first came onto youtube and finding it highly amusing particularly because the referee and his manager were so annoyed about his technique. Rest in Peace.

Dennis Marshall, a member of Costa Rica's national soccer team, died Thursday afternoon in a car accident, Traffic Police confirmed. He was 25.

I'm actually really upset about this, I just heard it on the Spanish-language news, and it's all over the internet. This is so sad. I saw him play on Saturday, and he played an excellent game. My condolences go out to his family and his teammates and to his NT supporters. I hope he's resting in peace.

Sepp Blatter will make way for a successor as FIFA president in four years' time if he is re-elected in June, he has announced.

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."

The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.

With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.

Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.

Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

The Spanish National football team will not be received by Pope Benedict XVI on Monday after suspending the hearing due to many commitment that the members of the national team have with their respective teams.

The players of Barcelona and Valencia have an appointment with the Champions League next week, Chelsea Fernando Torres plays that day against Fulham and Athletic on Monday will travel to Mallorca to be measured at the vermilion.

Thus, it was thought best to postpone this important event so that all the world champions can be received by His Holiness

Morace to step down as CanWNT coach
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO )

It's been speculated that this memo was leaked to cast a bad light on the CSA before they vote for governance reform on Saturday. So, for those who are curious this is what the CSA reform is about according to former CMNT captain Jason de Vos:

Change on the horizon for Canadian Soccer
OR IS ITTTT? )

Q&A Canadian soccer governance renewal
Any Ipswich fans? )

It's frustrating, as a Canadian national team supporter, to know that the only thing standing in our way is ourselves and the organization that is supposed to be helping us. Canada has the potential and the means to go further in football and this has gone on long enough, imo. The players, coaches and supporters deserve better.

Lastly, a lot of the exposure on the CSA reform and the Alberta Soccer Association (ASA) debacle should be credited to CanadianSoccerNews.com. Without the writers and editors of the site, this issue would have gone under the radar to the public. They have done a phenomenal job in terms of asking the right questions to the right people.

Tomorrow the vote for CSA reform goes through, follow it on twitter #CSAreform, tweet your support to two delegates who will be there and casting their votes for reform, @jasondevos and @karalang15. More twitter info here.

UPDATE: The CSA unanimously voted for reform in 2012 with all Provincial Presidents gradually out of the BoD by 2015. oooh yeaah \m/

Mic captures Sky presenters' sexist diatribe against female linesman

Sky Sports presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys were at the centre of a sexism row last night after they questioned whether a female linesman knew the offside rule during a Premier League football match.

The commentators, who apparently believed their microphones were switched off, were recorded making disparaging remarks about Sian Massey, 25, before Liverpool’s Premiership clash with Wolves yesterday. They also criticised Apprentice star and West Ham vice-chairman Karren Brady who had yesterday written about sexism in a newspaper column.

Commenting on Ms Massey, Mr Keys said: ‘Somebody better get down there and explain offside to her.’

Mr Gray, a former Scottish international footballer, replied: ‘Can you believe that? A female linesman. Women don’t know the offside rule.’

Mr Keys replied: ‘Course they don’t. I can guarantee you there will be a big one today. Kenny (Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish) will go potty. This isn’t the first time, is it? Didn’t we have one before?’

Later in the exchange, Mr Keys said: ‘The game’s gone mad. Did you hear charming Karren Brady this morning complaining about sexism? Do me a favour, love.’

Ms Brady had said she had ‘experienced sexism at its rankest, lies about my personal life and a level of calculated mischief that is simply appalling’.

Asked about the pundits’ remarks, she said: ‘I think this just sums up everything I said in my column.’

During the game, which Liverpool won 3-0, Ms Massey angered Wolves by refusing to rule Raul Meireles offside before he set up Liverpool’s first goal. The replay showed that she made the correct decision.

When The Mail on Sunday put the transcript to Mr Keys, he said: ‘I have no recollection of that. I have no idea what you are talking about. My recollection is that I wished the young lady all the best.’

When told a recording existed of the conversation, he said: ‘If you have a tape then you don’t need me to talk to you.’

Last night The Mail on Sunday sent a transcript and a copy of the recording to a Sky Sports spokeswoman.

She was not able to confirm or deny the veracity of the clip, which was provided to this newspaper by an anonymous source.

Mr Gray could not be reached last night

I was half sleep when I flipped to this game (yes, I watched a Liverpool game). They showed her and my reaction was "what? wait...is that a woman?!?! YOU GO GIRL!!" I don't know if I had these two assholes as my commentators, but iirc, mine praised her for getting the call right/doing a fantastic job.

Sad news for Pippo Inzaghi.

Ac Milan striker was injured yesterday during Milan Palermo and the exams today didn't brought good news: he broke his meniscus ligaments and his season can be over.

But not his career, I am sure. I know Pippo went through lots of injuries in his career but always stood up, fought and got back stronger than ever.

I really cannot say how many emotions Pippo gave me in this years of being a Milanista, but I'm saying: LOADS. I'll stand by you and I am sure you will come back and this isn't the end of your career!

If you want to leave a message for him you can write in this form (http://www.acmilan.com/it/contacts) , select PRESS as the object and tomorrow Ac Milan website will put everything online.

Manuel Pellegrini claims he has been approached by Liverpool and admits that he would welcome a chance to replace Roy Hodgson.

Hodgson is hoping that Sunday's win over Blackburn Rovers can act as a springboard for an resurgence, with his position at Anfield now under serious threat just three months into the job following the club's worst start to a domestic campaign since 1953.

Pellegrini is hopeful of returning to management by the end of the year after being dismissed by Real in May and would prefer a move to the Premier League, citing the Reds' Spanish contingent as a key motivation if he did succeed Hodgson.

He said: "Yes, Liverpool contacted me.

"It is a great club with many Spanish players who I already know, and it is my intention to work in the Premier League.

"I had lots of offers, some that I like. Ideally, I would like to find a club in December."
