Wayne Rooney’s name was requested on more replica football shirts around the world in the 2010-11 season than that of any other player in the Premier League, according to official data just released.

The 25-year-old Manchester United striker hit the No1 spot for the first time in his career by leap-frogging the previous best seller, Fernando Torres, who drops to No2.

Sales of ‘Torres’ shirts for Liverpool and Chelsea combined in 2010-11 were lower than for Rooney alone.

Rooney’s success is all the more remarkable given that he announced he wanted to leave United in October – an act that might reasonably have been greeted by a drop in supporter loyalty. But that wasn’t the case. It seems Rooney’s sales were given a boost after agreeing to stay with the club.

Rooney is the first United player to top the sales charts since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2007-08.

The full top 10 for 2010-11 are in the graphic below, as are the top three sellers for the previous three seasons.

The top 10 is published in the Premier League Season Review 2010-11, and is based on worldwide sales of official names and numbers, compiled by Sporting iD, which since 1993 has developed the technology behind the official players’ and replica products of the Barclays Premier League.

Total sales figures are never provided but it is understood that Rooney shirts sold a total of several hundred thousand to hit the No1 spot.

As this website reported exclusively in August last year (in reports linked here, and linked here), Manchester United have sold more official replica shirts worldwide in recent years than any other English Premier League club.

Typically United have sold between 1.2m and 1.5m shirts per year since 2005, with Liverpool next (900,000-plus in recent times, it is understood), followed by Arsenal and Chelsea.

New equipment for the 2011/2012 season (unveiled by 5 Emperor Palpatines)!

The latest FC Porto kits for the upcoming season were presented at The Yeatman hotel in Vila Nova de Gaia, overlooking the Douro River. The kits are in fact a working gear that, through hard work, can become tuxedos for the victories. On the players’ recommendation, the shirts are collarless, thus providing greater comfort.

Highlight goes to the fact that the home shirt’s central stripe is blue again. The away kit, in dark blue, has purple details that bring to mind the historic 2003/04 season. The inscription “Winning since 1893” can be seen inside all of the shirts. The technology used has remained the same: all kits are made from recycled plastic bottles.

Nike are, of course, quick to point out it's their lightest and most environmentally friendly kit EVAR!!1!, but it's also loaded with retro touches, in celebration of the club's 125th anniversary. So says the press release:
The classic design is inspired by the 1970’s strips and boasts a clean, refined look with a block red body and white sleeves with red speed stripe detail. The shorts are white with a red speed stripe and the white socks carry the club’s founding year 1886 on the back of the fabric.

On the back of the shirt below the neck reads ‘’Arsenal’, while inside the front, on the back of the crest, is a graphic that reads ‘Victoria Concordia Crescit’, (‘Victory Through Harmony’), Arsenal’s Latin motto, which was previously featured on earlier versions of their club crest between 1949 and 2002.

Sepp Blatter will make way for a successor as FIFA president in four years' time if he is re-elected in June, he has announced.

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."

The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.

With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.

Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.

Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

A few months ago on Facebook, Mesut Özil showcased a new pair of boots that he was going to wear for a few matches, more specifically, El Clásico. A week or so later, he and Nike joined to make a contest out of winning his boots. Sadly, I did not win said shoes. :|

I did win a t-shirt though...

The English Premier League will most certainly celebrate its 10,000th goal (unless there will be a couple of nil-nil draws, but perhaps the 10,000th goal will be already scored in the first match of the day, the early kick-off Manchester City v Chelsea one). Already there were 9,995 goals scored, so the fifth goal will get the cheers - and the goalscorer the laurels. Most impressingly would be a hattrick right on the mark. We will see. Football has its own rules, you know.

As Nike all the years is the ball sponsor of the Premier League the guys celebrated the special event with a special ball: the Golden Ball. This ball will be used in all ten Premier League matches this weekend - perhaps most strikers and midfielders will go for a hattrick out of this case they can get the ball home after the game then.

So far there are three other landmarks for goals in the Premier League:
  • 1st goal: Mark Venus (Ipswich Town v Tottenham) (2000 / 1)
  • 1,000th goal: Fabrizio Ravanelli (Derby County v Blackburn Rovers) (2001 / 2)
  • 5,000th goal: Dennis Bergkamp (Middlesbrough v Arsenal) (2005 / 6)
Nike has produced 100 of the golden limited edition T90 Tracers and they will be available to buy from the moment the 10,000th goal is scored in this weekend's round of Premier League matches. The golden ball costs £100, available from Nike Town London and www.nikestore.com/football.
