José Mourinho said his work had been ‘betrayed’ at Chelsea by the efforts of his players. Photograph: Jason Dawson/REX/Shutterstock

Chelsea have parted company with manager José Mourinho. The Portuguese returned to the club in 2013 and won the Premier League title last season, but having sunk to 16th place in the table, the Stamford Bridge outfit have dismissed their manager.

Mourinho’s side have lost nine league games this season, the worst defence of a Premier League title ever. The latest loss was to Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City, 2-1 at the King Power Stadium. Afterwards Mourinho took the unusual step of criticising his players. “I feel my work is betrayed,” he said. “I worked four days in training for this match. I identified four movements where Leicester score a lot of their goals and in two of the four situations I identified they scored their goals. I went through it all with the players, you can ask them.”

After the defeat it had seemed a matter of when, not if, Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich would act, with the club in real danger of slipping into the relegation zone over the crowded festive period.

When asked after the Leicester defeat if he could hold on to his job, Mourinho said: “The only thing I can say is that I want to. I have no doubts and I think you know me well enough, three years this time, plus three years another time, that I am not afraid of a big challenge, and in this moment this is a real big challenge. I want to stay, I hope Mr Abramovich and the board want me to stay.”

We’ve all been there, haven’t we? (For the record, I’ve never been there. I don’t smoke.)

A flat tire to start your morning, your usual taco joint was all out of barbacoa, you say through an insufferable lecture from your idiotic boss and to top all of that off, traffic is a nightmare on your way home to basement full of rain water from the night before. You just need a quick cigarette (or three — thanks, traffic!), and you’ll be good.

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny seems to know this feeling all too well. Szczesny, who is apparently at least an occasional smoker, was reportedly caught lighting up in the St. Mary’s Stadium showers following Arsenal’s 2-0 New Year’s Day defeat, which was underlined by the Pole’s poor performance in goal. Here, Szczesny’s pair of blunders can be seen all but gift-wrapping Southampton the three points that afternoon and resigning the Gunners to sixth place for the time being.

According to reports, Szczesny was fined £20,000 for the incident by an enraged Arsene Wenger. From theDaily Mail:

Former Arsenal star John Jensen had claimed on Danish TV that Szczesny, 24, had suffered a bitter fall-out with Wenger and would not play again this season, although Arsenal denied that allegation and said Szczesny remains part of their first-team plans.

Szczesny wasn’t even on the bench for Arsenal’s 2-0 third-round FA Cup victory over Hull City on Sunday. That could, however, have very easily been a predetermined game off for Szczesny who has started 17 of 20 Premier League games this season, as well as all six in the club’s Champions League group.

Nasri targets AFP journalist in foul mouthed tirade

Following news of a dressing-room argument with journalist-shusher Samir Nasri at the center, France manager Laurent Blanc made a few changes for his side's quarterfinal match against Spain. Namely, he left Nasri on the bench and didn't bring him into the match until the 65th minute.

The player, who during France's opening group game with England mouthed "shut your mouth" to television cameras in a message aimed at a L'Equipe journalist who had written a critical article of him that upset his sick mother, lost his cool after the defeat.

According to 20minutes.fr and Reuters, a journalist asked for Nasri's reaction to the loss, which Nasri at first refused, before storming back over to the reporter and saying, "You're always writing s*** stories about us." This is the exchange that followed:

Reporter: "Well get lost, then ..."
Nasri: "You tell me to get lost? Come and we'll sort it out over there. ..."
Reporter: "That's it ..."
Nasri: "F*** you, go f*** your mother, you son of a b****. F*** you, that way you can say I'm rude. "

The French press were quick to draw comparisons with the incident at the 2010 World Cup that saw Nicolas Anelka excluded from the France squad after insulting coach Raymond Domenech. Nasri had been left out of that tournament by Domenech – ironically over concerns about his behaviour after he fell out with senior members of the squad at Euro 2008.

French Football Federation president Noel le Graet has labelled Samir Nasri's behaviour "intolerable".

Laurent Blanc silent on future after France lose to Spain

Laurent Blanc avoided confirming that he would continue as France coach following their Euro 2012 quarter-final exit against Spain. Asked if he was ready to continue working with the players, Blanc did not give a definitive answer. He did, though, talk of the need for a long process for France to build a team to compete at the highest level.

Blanc has been linked with several clubs in the past months. The 46-year-old was firstly seen as a potential successor to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, before lately being linked to Chelsea and Tottenham, as well as Inter, who he played for from 1999 to 2001.

England's challenge at Euro 2012 almost was drastically undermined after the team's tactics were leaked to rival Sweden by a snooping journalist.

Ola Billger, 40, used binoculars to spy on England coach Roy Hodgson as he outlined his defensive plan to his team at a Kiev hotel ahead of last Friday's Group D clash.

Billger watched for 40 minutes and compiled detailed notes as Hodgson ran his players through his strategy for defending free-kicks and corners.  Billger then passed on the information to his own national team, which gladly accepted the dossier.

England went on to concede twice from free-kicks to Sweden before coming back to win 3-2, knocking the Scandinavians out of the competition.

Billger, who writes for Stockholm paper Svenska Dagbladet, said he stumbled on the briefing by chance, but was not going to let the opportunity to grab an advantage for his nation slip away.

"I just happened to look out of my third-floor window when I saw Roy Hodgson through a glass roof below," he told The S*n. "I realized I was watching his team briefing and slideshow so decided to take a closer look with my binoculars."

He added, "England decided to lay all their secrets out before me. What was I supposed to do -- look away? I called the Swedish camp straight away and they seemed delighted."

An England source told The S*n, "It's not nice being spied on and bad form of the Swedes to accept information obtained in such an underhand fashion."

England footballer Stewart Downing arrested after claim he punched his ex-girlfriend during row in nightclub

Footballer Stewart Downing was last night arrested on suspicion of assault after allegedly hitting an ex-girlfriend in a nightclub row.

The Liverpool winger and England international, 27, was arrested after a late night fracas at a pub in the upmarket suburb of Yarm, near Middlesborough, at about 1am last night.

It is claimed that he assaulted his ex-partner, with whom he is thought to have a child, after rowing with her while drinking at the Cross Keys club on Yarm High Street.

A local source told the Mail Online that there had been an incident between the two of them.

'She went over to one of his friends and said something that she shouldn't have,' the source said.

'He butted in and they were arguing.' It's then that the source alleged that he hit her.

The source continued: 'Police got there as they were thrown out. He caused a scene outside the club as well, when he realised they were going to take him in.'

While relatively upmarket, Yarm is notorious as a hangout for 'scrotes' - a slang term for young people - who go there for nights out, our source said. It is also a well known hangout for footballers.

Downing, who comes from nearby Middlesborough, is thought to have been back in town visiting old friends.

After coming up through the Middlesborough Academy, he played for the side for Middlesborough for first eight years of his career, before moving to Aston Villa.

Downing signed for Liverpool last year. His arrest is the latest embarrassment for the club, which in recent weeks has also been rocked by two racism scandals.

Referring to last night's incident, a police spokesman said: 'Police were called to an incident at a pub on Yarm High Street.

'A 27-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and a 32-year-old woman has also been arrested on suspicion of assault.

'Both are in custody and inquiries are ongoing.'

German National Team Not Aryan Enough For Butthurt Fabio Capello

(You know - that Italian manager who represents England).

Capello calls on Platini to act after swipe at Germans for ‘stealing talent’
By Matt Barlow (dailymail.co.uk)

"Odd ones out?" Let's play "spot the non-Aryan".

Fabio Capello has taken a swipe at Germany for adopting players of Turkish origin and called upon football’s rulers to end the drain of talent from poorer countries.

Capello is still haunted by England’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Germans in last summer’s World Cup and raised the issue of citizenship when he addressed the Dubai International Sport conference.

‘A line needs to be drawn,’ said the Italian. ‘Richer clubs are talent-scouting and stealing players by bidding higher and not thinking about the consequences for those countries.

‘These players are acquiring new passports. Germany had five of Turkish origin who opted to represent them and we all know what happened.’

Germany’s squad for the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa contained 11 players who could have qualified for other countries. Capello claims Turkey would have been far stronger with the ‘five’ who opted to represent Germany but his facts are muddled. Two players of Turkish descent were in Joachim Low’s squad — Mesut Ozil and Serdar Tasci — and both were born in Germany.

Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski, who both scored against England in Bloemfontein, were born in Poland. Podolski moved to Germany aged two and Klose aged seven.

John Terry, who has denied making a racial slur against Anton Ferdinand, with the QPR player

England captain John Terry will be charged with the alleged racial abuse of QPR's Anton Ferdinand.

The Crown Prosecution Service say there is sufficient evidence for the Chelsea star to face trial over alleged comments to the defender in a Barclays Premier League match at Loftus Road on October 23.

Alison Saunders, Chief Crown Prosecutor for London said:

“I have today advised the Metropolitan Police Service that John Terry should be prosecuted for a racially aggravated public order offence following comments allegedly made during a Premier League football match between Queen’s Park Rangers and Chelsea on 23 October 2011.

“The decision was taken in accordance with the Code for Crown Prosecutors and after careful consideration of all the evidence, I am satisfied there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and it is in the public interest to prosecute this case.

“Mr Terry will appear before West London Magistrates’ Court on 1 February 2012.

“He is now summonsed with a criminal offence and has the right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that nothing should be reported which could prejudice his trial.”

The news comes days after new footage was handed to prosecutors, who have been considering whether there is enough evidence to bring charges against the footballer.

Wayne Rooney’s father was arrested today in connection with an alleged football betting scam. The Manchester United striker's uncle Richie, 54, was also detained by police. The two men were among nine who were detained by police in Merseyside and Glasgow. It is understood Wayne Rooney senior, 48, was arrested at his home in the West Derby area of Liverpool. He has now been bailed pending further inquiries.

The arrests came after a nine-month investigation into the sending off of Motherwell midfielder Steve Jennings, 26. The former Tranmere Rovers player was also arrested in connection with the betting probe today. The Kirkby-born footballer was arrested by Merseyside police on behalf of the Gambling Commission at his home in Glasgow. He was one of nine people arrested, the other eight being detained at addresses on Merseyside.

After being booked for a foul early on in the game Jennings was shown a straight red card for putting his hand on referee Stevie O’Reilly and arguing when a penalty appeal was turned down in the 83rd minute of the SPL clash. Jennings is alleged to have asked O’Reilly when he was going to stop “cheating” Motherwell. But questions were raised by bookies when it emerged that several bets were made on a player being sent off including a £500 gamble placed through a new account opened in Liverpool at 10/1 odds. Two members of the Association of British Bookmakers, including online betting company Blue Square, reported concerns the day after the match.

In a statement SFA chief executive Stewart Regan attributed the information to the Gambling Commission and said the arrest follows “extensive inquiries” into alleged betting irregularities at a Scottish Premier League match. Mr Regan added: “While the investigation involves several other individuals outside Scotland, it is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match. Motherwell FC are aware of the situation and will issue a response in due course. The Scottish FA will make no further comment at this stage."

Merseyside Police said: “Detectives have today executed warrants at 10 addresses across Merseyside and Glasgow and arrested nine men as part of an investigation into suspicious betting activity. The arrests are the culmination of a joint operation with the Gambling Commission and the nine who have been arrested for conspiracy to defraud are being interviewed by detectives. Those arrested are a 29-year-old from Bootle, a 48-year-old from West Derby, a 54-year-old from Norris Green, a 26-year-old from Croxteth, a 22-year-old from Kirkdale, a 31-year-old from Litherland, a 68-year-old from Fazakerley, a 36-year-old from Kirkby and a 26-year-old from Glasgow.

Owen Hargreaves.jpg

Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves is set for a shock move to their neighbours and rivals Manchester City.

Hargreaves, released by United this summer after losing the best part of three years to knee problems, underwent a medical at Manchester's Bridgewater Hospital today.

The midfielder, who is now a free agent, attracted interest from Tottenham and Aston Villa, but is understood to have chosen City because of the platform it will provide for him to try to win back his England place.

Hargreaves joined United from Bayern Munich for £18million in 2007, after being voted England's best player in the World Cup in Germany the previous year.

But after helping United lift the Champions League in 2008 with victory over Chelsea in Moscow, Hargreaves fought in vain to overcome tendinitis in both knees, undergoing operations on both.

He lasted just five minutes into a comeback against Wolves last September and United decided to cut their losses on the 30-year-old, although he now has a chance to resurrect his career with their local rivals.

A pretty shocking move in general but he said he wanted frequent football e.g 40 matches this season and I don't see him being able to get that at City.

I didn't watch the game, but I saw this on MSN, and thought y'all would get a kick out of it (if you haven't seen it/raged at it already).

All Mario Balotelli had to do was a simple tap-in to put his team up 2-0 against the LA Galaxy. Instead, he tries to get all fancy with a back heel, embarrasses himself, and gets subbed off.

On a positive note, Mancini was looking kinda fly on the sidelines; his hair looks flawless.
