• Paul Scholes to sit on bench against Manchester City
• Sir Alex Ferguson 'delighted' by decision

Paul Scholes

Manchester United have announced that the former England midfielderPaul Scholes has come out of retirement and will play until the end of the season. He will sit on the bench for this afternoon's FA Cup third-round match against Manchester City.

A statement on the club's official website said: "Paul Scholes has rejoined the playing staff at Manchester United for the remainder of the season with immediate effect, after approaching Sir Alex Ferguson to reverse his decision, made at the end of last season, to retire.

"He has gone straight on to the bench for this afternoon's FA Cup third-round tie against Manchester City."

Ferguson, United's manager, said: "It's fantastic that Paul has made this decision. It's always sad to see great players end their careers, but especially so when they do it early. But he has kept himself in great shape and I always felt that he had another season in him. It's terrific to have him back."

Scholes said: "I've been pretty clear since I stopped playing that I miss it. I'm delighted the manager feels I can still make a contribution to the team and I'm looking forward to playing my part in trying to bring more success to this great club."

Scholes retired at the end of last season, after helping United to win their 19th league title. He has made 676 appearances for United, scoring 150 goals, since making his debut against Port Vale in the League Cup in 1994. He has won 66 caps for England.

Today, Bayern will face Napoli in the CL group stages, but it is not the first time theyve met. Back in 1989, in the Europa Cup semi final, they had an interesting character on their roster.

LEGEND

Edwin Van Der Sar, one of the best goalkeepers in the world during the past 2 decades, played his final match of football at Wembley against Barcelona on Saturday. He was without a doubt a remarkable player (and person) whose career began at the age of 20 at Ajax and finished at the age of 40 for Manchester United. During this time he won numerous trophies and broke numerous records.

Paul Scholes has decided it is time for him to hang up his boots and retire from playing football

Paul was part of the new wave of talent that came through to the first team during the mid-90's. He scored twice on his debut in the League Cup at Port Vale in the 1994/95 season and since then has enjoyed a long a successful career, making an incredible 676 appearances for the Club.

Paul will take on a coaching role with the Club from the start of next season. Fans will also have the opportunity to see Paul play again at Old Trafford in his testimonial match in August.

David Beckham has been given permission to play in Gary Neville’s testimonial at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The midfielder was delighted to be allowed to take part in the fixture where he will play alongside fellow United legends Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

Beckham said: 'I think Bruce (Arena, LA Galaxy coach) knows how important it is for Gary. It’s more important than anything for me to be there for Gary.'

Arena has allowed Beckham, 36, to miss out on one of the club’s upcoming fixtures in order to make the appearance after admitting he was already set for a break. 'We’d be resting David in one of the games next week anyway.'

Along with Neville, former England captain Beckham formed the right hand side of a Manchester United side that won the treble in 1999. The news will be a boost for Neville, who also enjoyed a successful partnership with Beckham for England. Earlier in the week Neville said: 'I am in contact with David. It is looking positive but we still have a couple of things to sort out.'

The date of the testimonial - just four days before United's Champions League final clash with Barcelona at Wembley - has been criticised in some quarters but Neville is adamant that the timing is right. 'Hopefully it will be an enjoyable game for the fans and, four days before Wembley, it will be like a celebration and send-off for the lads who have done so well this season.'

Although Neville is due to begin work as a Sky Sports pundit, the 36-year-old clearly has no intention of stepping back from his barely concealed love of all things United. 'I am a fan. I have always been a fan,' he said. 'I wanted to do something for the fans and have said that publicly for the last 15 years.

'This is something I know will give me satisfaction and fulfil what I believe to be a thank you, so the fans can go and enjoy it.'

So, watching Man City vs Tottenham (and with that, my boy Peterpoo scoring an own goal, oh the fail, oh the irony, oh the disgrace, oh the dsjfhdsjfhdsfdkjdfhkjhkjfhdkjfh), and, being the randy bung that I am, I realised that I could actually compile a starting XI from men on both teams who I – in my very dubious taste – consider shaggable.

OK, I’m done being a disgrace to female fans now. =) You say which team you think’s the fairest of them all, feel free to spam with pictorial evidence! Or, for the bant, feel free to randomly bung together two teams like Manchester Hotspurs or something, for the trolololols =)

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has lost his cool with Real Madrid counterpart Jose Mourinho ahead of their Champions League semi-final.

Before the first leg, Mourinho mischievously said Guardiola was a new breed of coach who criticised correct decisions by referees.

In an unusual outburst for the normally laid-back Guardiola, the Spaniard retorted: "He's the fucking boss. He's the fucking master and I can't compete with him at any instant."

lol, u mad Pep?

But srsly, what did Pep hope to achieve by trying to fight fire with fire when it comes to mind games against Jose the night before Clasico Round Three?

Wake-up call

Former New England Revolution star Taylor Twellman suffered a concussion that left lasting damage and sidelined him for good. Now he’s committed to making the beautiful game safer, in professional soccer and on school playing fields.

This article is quite long and intertwines Twellman's story with facts about concussions, the latest developments in our understanding of concussions, and the stories of two young players who have experienced concussions themselves. I bolded quite a bit (though relative to the length of the article, it's pretty short), hope you guys will take a look, I learned a lot from it.

Gary Neville has signed for Sky Sports, the former England and Manchester United defender will join the Sky Sports team from the start of the 2011-12 season.

Neville, 36, is well-placed to co-commentate and give his expert opinion on UEFA Champions League, Barclays Premier League, Carling Cup and future international fixtures and he is looking forward to the fresh challenge.

"I am thrilled to be joining Sky Sports," said Neville, who won 15 major trophies over a career spanning almost two decades.

"It has always been leading the way in football coverage. Now I have retired this feels like the perfect way for me to stay involved in football and I am looking forward to bringing my 19 years of match experience into television."

Neville spent his entire playing career with Manchester United and in 602 appearances for the club, won the UEFA Champions League, eight Premier League titles, three FA Cups, two League Cups and the UEFA Cup Winners Cup. He is also the most-capped right-back for England with 85 international caps to his name.

Sky Sports Managing Director Barney Francis said: "Gary will bring vast experience at the top level of domestic and European football from nearly two decades with Manchester United.

"He will give our viewers great insight when he joins our team next season working on Barclays Premier League, UEFA Champions League and Carling Cup football next season."

Described by Sir Alex Ferguson as "the best right-back of his generation", Neville was part of the United squad which won the FA Youth Cup in 1992 alongside David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and Paul Scholes.

Neville's most recent appearance in the Sky Sports studio was at Millennium Stadium for the UEFA Euro 2012 Qualifier between Wales and England on 26 March 2011.

Sepp Blatter will make way for a successor as FIFA president in four years' time if he is re-elected in June, he has announced.

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."

The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.

With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.

Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.

Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

Former England captain Paul Ince has condemned
Premier League footballers who wear snoods, baseball caps turned sideways, headphones - and tights.

"Back in my time, and I sound old now, it was black and white boots and that was it," the Notts County boss told Midlands Late Kick Off.

"Now you've got snoods, people wearing headphones when they are doing interviews, which I find disrespectful, pink boots, green boots, you name it they've got it, tights - they'll be wearing skirts next.

"You try to bring your kids up the right way and I think somewhere down the line managers have got to come together and say: 'Listen if you are doing interviews, you don't wear headphones, no hats, no silly stuff like that'. I don't think it's the way football should be played. We should all, as a managers' union, come together and stop all this. It's getting ridiculous I'm afraid.

"I'm sick and tired of seeing players, even when it's mild weather, wearing tights and these things [snoods] around their necks. It's not right.

"You see players coming off the buses with earphones around their ears. What ever happened to the art of conversation? You go into the changing room and they've all got their headphones on listening to their own bit of music. When I was at Inter Milan we used to have dinner together and talk together for two to three hours getting to know one another."

Ince, now 43, played for West Ham, Manchester United, Inter Milan, Liverpool, Middlesbrough, Wolves, Swindon and Macclesfield, where he was player-manager.

He has also managed MK Dons twice, Blackburn and now Notts County.

Maybe there is something in the water? It's not just Ronaldo retiring, but over the weekend and Monday, 3 well-loved ex-Socceroos members retired from football too. For those not interested, please scroll on by... don't make me make a Scrolleroos gif now. ;)

John Aloisi, Josip Skoko, and Mark Viduka (officially)
Fans probably best remember John Aloisi for his winning penalty-kick in the shootout that beat Uruguay and took Australia to the World Cup for the first time in 32 years, Josip Skoko for his cracker goal against Greece in a pre-World Cup friendly in 2006, and Mark Viduka for... everything, really.

Thanks for the memories. ♥ )

I am now going to go cry under my desk, but before that, I am planning an expedition to find the Fountain of Youth, anyone want to join me? ;___;
