Top Scorers in Qualifying; Past Tournament Winners & Hosts )

Write-ups of teams that made the Quarterfinals: Congo, Equatorial Guinea, DR Congo, Tunisia, Algeria, Ghana, Guinea, and Ivory Coast )

Apologies for not posting this before AFCON got started. I guess now you can look and see if World Soccer's analysis was remotely close to what happened in the group stages. ;-P There are write ups for all of the other teams (like Gabon, Senegal, South Africa, and Cameroon) but I omitted them since this post is pretty long. If you would like to see them, let me know and I'll do another post.

Did you know that the Asian Cup was coming up?  In honor of [livejournal.com profile] ontd_football's Asian peeps <3, here is a preview of the tournament, which will run from January 9th to January 31st in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Newcastle, Australia.  You can also see lots of general details @ Wikipedia. ("The winners of the tournament will earn the right to participate in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup, which is to be hosted by Russia.")  The competition's webpage is HERE.

Many have a shot to win this...might not be overly condusive to betting, meliadoul! )

So, the Africa Cup of Nations aka AFCON begins on the 17th of January, 2015 and with the reigning champion Nigeria failing to qualify, the race is wide open!

Normally, [livejournal.com profile] ms_geekette does the AFCON posts for us, but I thought it'd be good to brief everyone on the groups and fixtures and stuff.

So here are the groups for the AFCON:

So I was watching our NT play against Indonesia and watching them play good football and win 4-0 inspired me to make this post so that people can get to know our little known NT better. (Asian football needs love too, you know!) I don't claim to be an expert on the team so this is not really going to be a well-written profile. But let me present some facts that I do know!
Facts and pictures ahead! )
THAT'S ALL. Hope I didn't take too much of your time. :D We are a problematic but beautiful little country with a lovely little football team. Hopefully this post could get some Filipino lurkers come out of the darkness. >:D (Then maybe [livejournal.com profile] mrscrapbag and I wouldn't have to feel so alone. </////3)

*This has been/will hopefully be posted in a few other comms, so sorry if you see this more than once. *

With all of the awesome blogs about football (everything from Just Football to
A Football Report to In Bed With Maradona and all of hundreds of others) as well as the quarterlies that have started cropping up (The BlizzardHowler and XI come to immediate mind), we wanted a place for our writing.

Football is, stereotypically, the boys’ sport. They’re the players, the fans, the writers. If you were to take a cursory glance at the whole of the culture, you might get the idea that it’s just them.

Except it’s not.

According to the popular book Soccernomics, in 2004, more than forty percent of the global audience for Euro 2004 was female. Think about that: eight years ago, almost half of the viewers of what is arguably the second biggest (or, to some, the biggest) football tournament in the world were women. Since then, the numbers have risen and yet, if you look at the bylines or the members of the teams of any of the blogs or magazines, the numbers don’t match up.

That’s where Second Touch comes in.

More info behind the cut )

Note: I really did try to tag this properly and then got lost and almost didn't find my way out. I apologize about that.

The former Portuguese international joins the Ewood Park club on a free transfer following his release from Braga at the end of last season, signing a two-year-deal.

~

So very happy that Nuno gets to continue playing. I have loved him forever. My favorite currently playing footballer and only 2nd to Eusebio for favorite of all time.

If you want to know more about him, check my blog post out I wrote last year when he was released from Benfica.

oh, and he's a fine, fine human being.

He's so well spoken!

I will forever until my dying day stan this man. I'm also 99% sure almost 50% of my kit collection feature his name and number. Woops.

HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY, NUNO! (His birthday is 5 July)

Remember that uh-mazing post about that uh-mazing team last week?

Because it's the German National Team, the players also compete in other leagues. Mainly Bundesliga.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

And in case there are newbies who don't know much about it, I figured, why don't we re-introduce them _fb'ers?

The only problem being... I very rarely get to see them play.

THEREFORE!

I want YOU GUYS to tell me (and the other new _fb'ers) all about your favorite team! Why they're your favorite team! Why Bayern Munich is really Gary Mother-effing Oak in disguise! Why Werder Bremen have such ridiculous final scores! Why someone planted a flag on a rival's stadium in the middle of winter! Why Mats Hummels and Benni Howedes have a ~forbidden, star-crossed lovers~ relationship!

And why Bundesliga deserves more attention especially FSC - I am giving you the side eye here.

And newbies, or those who haven't followed this league, ASK QUESTIONS! I want a party thread, stat. Penguins can be invited.

eta: HERE is a 101 post for super-newbies.

HERE is an awesome post about Schalke, who made it to the semis last year in CL and the birthplace of a certain well-known Duckie.

HERE is a gorgeous post about Werder Bremen!

i'mma keep digging around here for you guys, i promise (seriously - no Bayern Munich intros? Although _fb has quite a few of the Bayern catalog posts...)
[identity profile] blackjedii.livejournal.com
So somebody mentioned something about rec'cing teams to newbies and someone else said that this place needed more Germans, therefore I am ready to introduce you to the BEST TEAM ON EARTH:

Why are they the #1 most awesomest of awesome? Well let me tell you behind this cut here... )

Now that I have done that it is up to the rest of you! Why is your team awesome? WHAT makes your team awesome? WHO is the awesome on your team? bet it cannot beat this <3 <3 <3

Hired as the U.S. men's team head coach less than a week ago, Jurgen Klinsmann is expected to name his roster for the Aug. 10 friendly against Mexico shortly.

Well, it’s time! The 2011 season of Allsvenskan is officially starting on Saturday. Exciting? Of course!! Needless to say, I felt the need for an introduction post to it all. Your very own 101 to everything Swedish football. Or, well, as much as I can cram in. And then some more that I’ve missed. Anyway, this is your guide to Allsvenskan, Superettan and my very own NT.

Let’s call it Sweden 101

Sepp Blatter will make way for a successor as FIFA president in four years' time if he is re-elected in June, he has announced.

Blatter is seeking a fourth term as FIFA president and is being challenged by Asian confederation chief Mohamed Bin Hammam.

The 75-year-old told UEFA's Congress in Paris on Tuesday that if he wins he will definitely stand down in 2015, saying: "You know very well that I am a candidate for the next four years as FIFA president but these will be the last four years for which I stand as a candidate."
He added: "Together we have the task of bringing together the adventure we have started.
"We want to ensure a better future for our youth."

The new president will be elected at a Fifa Congress which starts on 31 May.

With Bin Hammam vowing to increase Fifa's decision-making power and spread its considerable wealth, Blatter is facing his first challenge since Issa Hayatou took him on - and lost - in 2002.

Bin Hammam is also currently attending the Congress for European football's governing body, Uefa, as they lobby federation presidents for their vote on 1 June in Zurich.
Uefa members make up more than one quarter of the maximum 208 Fifa voters that Blatter and Bin Hammam will attempt to woo.
The winner needs a two-thirds majority of valid votes cast in the first ballot, or a majority in the second.

Fifa has set an 1 April deadline for other candidates to be nominated by a single member federation.
"We are in extra time," said Blatter, referring to the time left before the election. "Let's wait and see what the outcome will be."

The 2011 Qatar Asian Cup is about take place(!!!), and in celebration/preparation/anticipation/whatever, this is a...

SOCCEROOS 101

To get your attention: Harry Kewell! Tim Cahill! Lucas Neill! (Double-L surnames!?) Handsome men!
This is: the Australian national football team! (totes not obvious, yah?)
The bosses: Football Federation Australia (FFA)
Represent!: Asian Football Confederation
Deck out in: green and gold
Y’all know us as: the Socceroos (as if you couldn’t tell by the very subtle font above)
Flyin’ low without this sponsor: Qantas Airlines (full name: Qantas Socceroos)... which is good because the boys do shittonnes of travelling
Fashion statement: Nike
HBIC Coach: Holger Osieck
HBIC Captain: the dashingly handsome Lucas Neill
In line for FIFA’s throne: (as of 15 December 2010) rank #26
Haters: to the far left
Kangaroos: are totally badass
Koalas: ditto

The Socceroos pre-2006, the move to the AFC, our Asian Cup and World Cup campaigns, the coaches who took us there, our kickass Women’s team (who WON THE 2010 WOMEN’S ASIAN CUP(!!!!!) I might ever-so-subtly add), and the men’s team’s 2011 Asian Cup squad members. All here (with a healthy dose of tl;dr) under the cuts!
Note that I will mostly stick to calling it “soccer", because that’s generallyyyyy what we’re used to calling it in Australia (SOCCERoos, y/y?). We have another sport, Australian Rules football (or AFL (Australian Football League) for short), which is what we refer to as "football" or "footy", so it gets a bit confusing. And for the record, it is NOTHING like the ‘football’ most of you know. AFL is more like a bastardisation of chaotic rugby with a bit more kicking. But then, I’m a biased soccer fan, sooo...

Now, without further ado, obligatory kangaroo invites you in!

(that’s my pet kangaroo, her name is Milly and she is 2 years old*. :’)

*I am joking. We do not generally keep kangaroos as pets in Australia.

And so, we begin...

The Coaches: The Head Honchos Of The Socceroos )

The Squad: The 2011 Asian Cup Socceroos )

Australia for 2015 AFC Asian Cup )

And so concludes this extremely long-winded Socceroos 101. How will we fare in the 2011 Asian Cup, and eventually, the qualifiers for the 2014 Brazil World Cup? Only time will tell.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is the Australian national team, our beloved Socceroos.

Dancing John Travolta and Tim Cahill thanks you for your time.

Hola! I just join this com and LJ, a total newb. So I figure i might just introduce my national football team as my first posting. Might worth whatever i'm getting for this long post lol

What this cup is about?

The AFF Suzuki cup is a football competition contested by the national teams of Southeast Asia, the winner will be crown as Southeast Asia champion.

It is a 2 yearly competition and the past winner is almost always between Thailand and Singapore (3 each) with Vietnam is/was the reigning champion at the moment as they won it last time but was defeated by Malaysia :D in the semifinal , to make them through to the final meeting with Indonesia after they defeated Philippines, whoever win is a new record nonetheless.

There's not really been a lot of news today so i just wanted to share this with you all :)
It's really nice and informative and we get to learn quite a bit about Xabi too <3

I really hope this has not already been posted but if it has feel free to tell me so i can delete it or the mods can do the honour.

Q:  What are you values as a professional athlete?

A:  I like to be honest and respectful of others, and I think how you behave on the field is very important.

Q:  So, you don’t believe that the end justifies the means?

A:  No.  The end is to win, and the means are to be honest.

Q:  Your career has been brilliant…

A:  Yes, I’m satisfied, but I’m still ambitious.

Q:  Your best game?

A:  I have two: the final of the World Cup this year, and the final of the Champions League in 2005 with Liverpool.

Q:  And the worst?

A:  There have been a lot of deceptions, but I remember especially the 2006 World Cup, when France eliminated us.

Come in for some more xabiiii :) )

Are you there God? It’s me, Xabi.

Image and video hosting by TinyPic

It’s been 214 days, 5,136 hours, 308,160 minutes or 18,489,600 seconds since I left England and in all honesty diary, I can’t take it. I am trying so hard to make this work but there is nothing but a deep chasm in my heart that is forever Liverpool. I am reading up on Eternal Return and the idea makes my heart heavy with sadness. The cyclic revolution of the universe, with its limited state coinciding with the steady marching on of time means that I will have to endure this depression over and over and over again.

As Nietzsche states, “Now, however long a time may pass, according to the eternal laws governing the combinations of this eternal play of repetition, all configurations which have previously existed on this earth must yet meet, attract, repulse, kiss, and corrupt each other again...”

I cannot cope with this.

It may look, to the passive, unassuming viewer on my life that I am happy. You may look at pictures of me
hugging and cherishing my current teammates and appearing happy and at one with my family on the streets of Madrid. But only you dear diary, know my inner torment. It simply cannot be endured. But yet it must be. Facades must be maintained, and true feelings must be repressed, and instead I must content myself with looking at pictures of my beloved and our team on Daylife and GettyImages and wishing, praying, hoping that I was still there.

Sigh.
