We’ve all been there, haven’t we? (For the record, I’ve never been there. I don’t smoke.)

A flat tire to start your morning, your usual taco joint was all out of barbacoa, you say through an insufferable lecture from your idiotic boss and to top all of that off, traffic is a nightmare on your way home to basement full of rain water from the night before. You just need a quick cigarette (or three — thanks, traffic!), and you’ll be good.

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny seems to know this feeling all too well. Szczesny, who is apparently at least an occasional smoker, was reportedly caught lighting up in the St. Mary’s Stadium showers following Arsenal’s 2-0 New Year’s Day defeat, which was underlined by the Pole’s poor performance in goal. Here, Szczesny’s pair of blunders can be seen all but gift-wrapping Southampton the three points that afternoon and resigning the Gunners to sixth place for the time being.

According to reports, Szczesny was fined £20,000 for the incident by an enraged Arsene Wenger. From theDaily Mail:

Former Arsenal star John Jensen had claimed on Danish TV that Szczesny, 24, had suffered a bitter fall-out with Wenger and would not play again this season, although Arsenal denied that allegation and said Szczesny remains part of their first-team plans.

Szczesny wasn’t even on the bench for Arsenal’s 2-0 third-round FA Cup victory over Hull City on Sunday. That could, however, have very easily been a predetermined game off for Szczesny who has started 17 of 20 Premier League games this season, as well as all six in the club’s Champions League group.

I know y'all are just chomping at the bit for even more matches these week (NO, everyone screams), and the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers are here to provide.  This is a scheduled post - idk if it's going to post correctly or not, but I thought I'd throw this up if someone wanted to watch/follow the games and use it as a discussion post.  I probably will not be around for these games, unfortunately.  By my calculations, the first game will start about an hour after this post (hopefully) goes up.

Right now, Morocco (the 2015 AFCON host nation) has asked the CAF to postpone the final games in January due to the Ebola epidemic (ARTICLE), but no final decision has been made as of yet - it will be discussed at meetings on November 2-3 (ARTICLE).  As far as I can tell, all games today are being played as scheduled.  Prayer circle for everyone involved.

AFCON Qualifiers - Wednesday, Oct 15th: 14 games for your eyeballs )

These times are local (and I don't know what time zones they are), but you can switch them to your local time at the CAF website for the matches.  Click on the little Earth graphic in the upper right corner. Presumably there will also be game summaries: AFCON FIXTURES @ CAF

Also, here's a list of broadcast games I snagged from a beIN Sports stream (these times are Eastern - EDT).  Don't know if any other channels are airing them.

At least 8 games are being aired on TV )

The rest of the qualifiers are scheduled for Nov 14-15 and Nov 19.

(Also, pretend Ghana has a tag.)

According to a report by Jonathan Johnson of Bleacher Report and ESPN, Laurent Blanc is on the hot seat at Paris Saint-Germain.

If the French giants aren’t able to defeat Barcelona in Tuesday’s Champions League clash, Blanc could be under serious pressure from the club’s hierarchy and according to Johnson, this weekend’s league draw with Toulouse has ratcheted up the heat even more.

The assessment of Blanc’s position may be a bit of an unfair one, given that star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic is out for the forseeable future with a heel injury. ("nnn bye bitch," pep whispered and pricked the good sis zlatan, destroying ha chances of playing.)

To see how PSG fare without him, just look to last year’s competition when the club crumbled to Chelsea in the second leg of their quarterfinals, unable to get just one away goal which would have seen them well through.

Zlatan was involved in nearly half of all PSG’s Ligue 1 goals last season with 26 goals and 16 assists (PSG scored 84 goals altogether) and scored 10 of their 25 Champions League goals during the previous competition.

“The only way we will find our level again is by playing because it is our philosophy and the players adhere to it,” Blanc said about his team. “Barcelona have had this philosophy for 30-40 years and see where it led them. We lack aggressiveness when we don’t have the ball.” A harsh but true assessment of his side.

(mm yas gurl, however you STAY fuckin up the programme when you play us in 4-3-3 and shit when everyone knows we do better with 4-2-3-1. sooo )

If that wasn’t enough of a shot to PSG’s chances, captain Thiago Silva (don't even get me started on this extremely talented flop) and electric winger Ezequiel Lavezzi (one of his booty cheeks gave out*) are also injured, with both likely out as well. :((

just kidding here's a cut bc this looks huge on the front page )

Here we go, everyone! Roughly twelve hours of D-Day left. Let's just lump all our thoughts, hopes, fears and denial in one post. Heard something interesting? Share it with us, even if it's just a rumor. Wanna get something (football related) off your chest? Share the burden. Or you just want to distract yourself/pass the time/lighten the mood by entertaining us all with silliness, like Bale in pink wearing a headband ...

(Fun fact: did you know that pink was originally the color for baby BOYS? Because it was considered the "kiddie version" of red, and red's for big, strapping, bold MENFOLK. Meanwhile, the serenity of blue was for girls. So, really, Real's just being "traditional" ... And childlike. Forever young!)

Are the clubs already satisfied with their lineups, or will there be a mad Supermarket Sweep frenzy as the big boys proceed to toss wads of cash at desired players to see what sticks? In the meantime, while all that's going on behind closed doors, football fans are left to pick at what little scrap of rumors we can find and hope to find something substantial. Will my club buy the player we desperately need? Will my club sell my favourite player after all?? Are United seriously gonna let Chicharito go and keep Fellaini??? (<-Not even a United fan but ... wow, seriously?)

I need the press to stop asking Mou about him, I'm tired of the rudeness )

Not a great way to start the season as you all can see.

Anyway, that's all I can manage for now. I don't see as much about Paris Saint-Germain (which is understandable, I know L1 can be boring as fuck) on here, so I figured I'd try to do something for these butts! Sorry if this post is OTT, I didn't want to copy and paste stuff from other sites and thought it'd be best to throw in humour.

also unrelated to the post, I'm going to see Brasil vs Colombia in Miami on 5 Sep and I'm scared I'll be sat in a section with mostly Colombians. ride or die for Brasil but I'm not trying to get punched for the NT. I know way too many people who are still pissed about the WC match.

mods, let me know if I need to fix anything!! I hope I didn't fuck things up too badly.

Carl Jenkinson, the cutest boy in the world, might be leaving Arsenal. *bursts into tears*

The signs are already there. His best friend (is there no loyalty?) is even hanging out and *gasp* exchanging #banter with his replacement:

This post is basically a tribute to Jenks, my favourite Gunner. I hope the loan deal falls through or is a false rumour. Or please God - just let it be a loan and not a sale. Please I'll be so good.

• Barcelona striker hurt in semi-final win over Al-Sadd
• Injury set to rule him out of Spain's Euro 2012 squad

David Villa is carried off on a stretcher

The Barcelona striker David Villa faces up to six months out of the game after breaking his left leg in Barcelona's Fifa Club World Cup semi-final win over Al-Sadd in Yokohama.

"David has fractured his leg and will return to Barcelona for an operation as soon as possible," their coach Pep Guardiola said. "We are all very sad for him. He's a charming personality and it's a massive blow for the team.

"He will be out for a long time: I don't know how long but it takes a long time to return after a break like this. All the players are very worried about David. We hope he will return as soon as possible. Our thoughts are with him and we will have to win the Club World Cup without him."

Villa, who had been linked with a multi-million pound move to England in the January transfer window, suffered a fractured tibia while challenging for a ball in the Al-Sadd penalty area. He was taken to the Yokohama Rosa hospital.

The injury means Spain are likely to be without their leading striker for the defence of their title at Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine. The 30-year-old is Spain's all-time top scorer with 50 goals in 81 appearances.

"We are going to miss Villa," the Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara said. "We hope it isn't too bad. When you play you never think that these things can happen. It was bad luck." He added: "There is a long way to go [until Euro 2012]." Barcelona won the game comfortably 4-0, and will face Santos in the final on Sunday. The Brazilian defender Adriano scored twice in the first half – his opener helped by a moment of hesitation from the Al-Sadd goalkeeper Mohamed Saqr. After the break, Seydou Keita and Maxwell added another two to complete a comprehensive win.

On Wednesday Guardiola had denied the club had been actively trying to sell the 30-year-old Villa only 19 months into the four-year deal agreed following his €40m (£33.5m) transfer from Valencia.

Villa scored five times in 15 league appearances this season, following his 18 goals in 34 games as Barça won the Primera División title last season.

Darren Fletcher

On behalf of Darren Fletcher, Manchester United wishes to announce that he is taking an extended break from football for health reasons.

Over the past year he has had several absence periods which we have attributed to a viral illness in order to respect his right to medical confidentiality. Darren has, in fact, been suffering from ulcerative colitis (a chronic inflammatory bowel condition) for some time preceding this.

Whilst he was able to maintain remission of symptoms for a considerable period this has proved more difficult recently and Darren’s continued desire to play and his loyalty to both his club and country has probably compromised the chances of optimising his own health and fitness.

He has therefore accepted medical advice to take an extended break from the demands of training and playing in order to afford the best chance possible of achieving full remission once again.

We request that his privacy is respected and hope that the removal of the additional stress associated with speculation regarding his health will also aid his recovery.

source

Gutted for him. Knew he wasn't fit this season (look at his arms in the picture when he scored vs Benfica a few weeks ago), respect to him for trying to play. I just wish he manages to recover his health and then hopefully play again.

The top professional soccer league for women, which has only five teams, is in danger of losing sanctioning from US Soccer, the sport’s governing body in the United States.

Women’s Professional Soccer completed its third season last summer on the heels of the Women’s World Cup. Most of the players on the United States team, which lost to Japan in the riveting tournament final, also played in W.P.S. They returned from Germany to acclaim and the league experienced a modest bump in attendance as the Western New York Flash, based in Rochester, won the championship.

The six-team league was reduced to five when league officials terminated the magicJack franchise in South Florida. The team’s owner, Dan Borislow, who invented the device of the same name to make inexpensive telephone calls, subsequently filed a lawsuit suit against W.P.S.

According to US Soccer’s bylaws, all professional leagues are required to have a minimum of eight teams. With only six (all in the eastern part of the country) in 2011, W.P.S. requested and was granted a one-year waiver by the federation’s board of directors. Now with only five teams a certainty for the 2012 season, W.P.S. requested an extension of the waver to take it through a season that will include the London Olympics in the hope of attracting new investors before 2013.

“Our primary goal is to retain our D1 status,” Jennifer O’Sullivan, the league’s commissioner, said Thursday in a telephone interview. “We just came off a phenomenal season in 2011 and it feels like this is our time. We want to grab that and run with it.”
