source : bild article sadly behind paywall but posted in a tumblr post
e: apparently he also received five speeding tickets during that time, but no-one ever noticed he didn't have a license o_O
e2: someone from reddit translated a quote from the man himself:

e2: someone from reddit translated a quote from the man himself:
He took driving lessons when he was 18 but never took a driving test. He just decided to drive without a licence. "Sadly I decided to take this route. I can't even comprehend the reasons myself. Now I know: I was too naive and it was stupid. I have learnt my lesson. It will never happen again."
e3: can't believe it took me so long to remember his nickname is Rolls Reus.yeah. i am disappoint :/

Date: 2014-12-18 09:49 am (UTC)I am really surprised that he didn't have to show a license with the speeding tickets, unless they were a "caught on camera, mailed a ticket" sort of thing. But really, it seems like *someone* would've noticed before now. I guess he had no car insurance, either?
(In the US, you've got to show your driver's license for a lot of things as a photo id. You'd be pretty SOL without it or a non-driving ID card.)

Date: 2014-12-18 09:51 am (UTC)From what i've gathered it was indeed the caught on camera, mailed the ticket type things. As for insurance, apparently a license is not needed for that in Germany?

Date: 2014-12-18 09:58 am (UTC)This is a remarkably stupid thing to do. Yes, driving education in Germany takes time and costs money, as it's not a DIY thing, but surely at some point he could have gone through with it?

IDGAF about this shit, #badboy4life
Date: 2014-12-18 11:02 am (UTC)I get they will use him as an example but the fact he has managed to drive around for so long without a licence says as much about him and his own stupidity as it does about the stupidity of the German dvla?!
This MASSIVELY dumb bae can do no wrong in my eyes really
unless he fucks off to Bayern and I will be madI'm jaded for this Bieber-esque bad boy. This is really dumb though, why take lessons and not do the test?! It's not as if he is short of money and could probably afford a frigging chauffeur! I can't say I'm disappointed, he's never struck me as the sharpest tool in the box, but it is pretty arrogant to think you can get away with this.Oh well I hope he's not banned from this comm now for the outrage of this!!! I will cry :(
RE: IDGAF about this shit, #badboy4life
Date: 2014-12-18 11:24 am (UTC)Honestly, I've been driving for fifteen years, and I've never had to show my license to anyone. I've gotten three or so very low-level speeding tickets (in the "damn, this was a 50-kph zone, not a 70-kph as I thought" category), and once a call from the local police because I'd really inadvertently blocked someone's driveway in the dark and snow and they decided to do the quick and logical thing and tell me to move rather than tow the car. I'd be surprised if any of those things had involved anyone looking at my driving license.

Date: 2014-12-18 02:13 pm (UTC)Supposedly he used a fake Dutch license.
Date: 2014-12-18 02:42 pm (UTC)Dortmund club management person Aki Watzke here:
Marco decided to take the step of driving without license when he was eighteen or nineteen. Only after that came this incredible prominence. So he could barely drive to a driving school and say, "I'd like to take the license". That would have come out at once, and it was of course known that he had been driving before already.
And then blah-blah about them supporting young people who had made mistakes, and him accepting the punishment etc.
Watzke was asked about WDR (public TV/radio station) reporting Reus had shown a fake Dutch license in a police control, but declined to comment. Oh boy.

Date: 2014-12-18 05:16 pm (UTC)e: and if i'm not mistaken he's charged for 3 years because that's the last time they can conceivably say he was driving, given he got the first speeding ticket then.
he had the driving classes at 18 or 19 and i assume has been driving in between that time
