Marco Reus fined 540,000 euros for driving without a license for 3 years

source : bild article sadly behind paywall but posted in a tumblr post

e: apparently he also received five speeding tickets during that time, but no-one ever noticed he didn't have a license o_O

e2: someone from reddit translated a quote from the man himself:

He took driving lessons when he was 18 but never took a driving test. He just decided to drive without a licence. "Sadly I decided to take this route. I can't even comprehend the reasons myself. Now I know: I was too naive and it was stupid. I have learnt my lesson. It will never happen again."

e3: can't believe it took me so long to remember his nickname is Rolls Reus.

We have state photo IDs for non-drivers, but since a lot of people drive, anyway, it gets conflated with a driver's license. It generally goes through the same office. Other than passports (which aren't massively common), there isn't a national photo ID in the US. So you have to show your driver's license or photo ID equivalent a lot. I had to show my driver's license as ID at my doctor's office earlier this week (which was weird, but I guess it was to combat health insurance fraud since those cards generally don't have photos).

In some places you might be able to get through with a driver's license if that is the first thing you grab from your wallet, as it's official enough to make it being fake unlikely. But for certain really official things, the ID is required, and its number will be noted down. We also don't use "social security numbers" as ID (which seems remarkably unsafe to me); one gets a social security card when one starts a first employment, but I've never needed the thing since.

Our social security cards are just pieces of paper...they aren't really overly official seeming if you look at one in person. I got my number as a child. I guess that's the closest we have to a national ID, but there aren't any photos involved, so it has limited use as an in-person ID thing (usually only employers want to see it in person). Since identity theft has gotten more common, fewer places are demanding that you give your social security number these days, but then you have to have something else that is official to prove that you are who you say you are.
