Marco Reus fined 540,000 euros for driving without a license for 3 years

source : bild article sadly behind paywall but posted in a tumblr post

e: apparently he also received five speeding tickets during that time, but no-one ever noticed he didn't have a license o_O

e2: someone from reddit translated a quote from the man himself:

He took driving lessons when he was 18 but never took a driving test. He just decided to drive without a licence. "Sadly I decided to take this route. I can't even comprehend the reasons myself. Now I know: I was too naive and it was stupid. I have learnt my lesson. It will never happen again."

e3: can't believe it took me so long to remember his nickname is Rolls Reus.

yeah. i am disappoint :/

I thought you meant his licence expired, but wow, he never got it in the first place? Wtf ...

Why did he never get a driver's license? (I'd have to run the article through machine translation, so I don't know if the article gets into that.)

I am really surprised that he didn't have to show a license with the speeding tickets, unless they were a "caught on camera, mailed a ticket" sort of thing. But really, it seems like *someone* would've noticed before now. I guess he had no car insurance, either?

(In the US, you've got to show your driver's license for a lot of things as a photo id. You'd be pretty SOL without it or a non-driving ID card.)

In Germany, there is an actual photo ID; identification isn't related to driving.

If he hadn't had insurance, he'd have been fined for that too, I'd think.

So, this means he is perfect for....a Real Madrid transfer? XD

Trying to think of clubs where it would not be that shocking, but I think even they are not that clueless. Maybe one of the London clubs since someone not having a license wouldn't be that uncommon. ;-P

A note for those wondering at the fine: In Germany, there aren't absolute values for fines giving for real offenses (rather than, say, parking tickets). They're calculated based on a hypothetical daily income. The penalty is a certain number of daily rates, meaning fines are somewhat just according to a person's means. He received 90 days' worth, which is the maximum level for a monetary fine. After that, it's suspended (and later non-suspended) prison sentences. His daily rate therefore works out as 6000 Euro, which comes to 2,190,000 € per year. A person making a normal income might have had to pay a few thousand for the same offense.

This is a remarkably stupid thing to do. Yes, driving education in Germany takes time and costs money, as it's not a DIY thing, but surely at some point he could have gone through with it?

Insurance is tied to the car, not the driver; you could conceivably register a car and have it insured for any person, including someone without a license or not of age.

Here we have "points" on your driving record. If you had gotten that many tickets, your insurance would be raised by a lot, probably. Also, I think it can raise your fine if you get another ticket. (I don't know if they run the driving record for the mailed tickets or not, though, since that is sent to the person registered on the car tag.) Jail time might only come in if you happen to kill someone. :-/

It's nice to know that there are possibly a ton of unlicensed (and maybe uninsured) drivers on the Autobahn driving like maniacs. It's a comforting thought, not. o_O

I'd say that 90 % of the speeding tickets in Germany come from being caught on camera and then being mailed the ticket. He was only now caught because the police stopped him because his sports car caught their eye and he only had his normal ID on him (which is mandatory to carry all the time but of course when you're driving, you also need your license).

And he took some driving lessons (I wonder how many because you have to take about 30 in Germany; I'm sure it was way less, nevermind the theoretical lessons that are just as important) and never bothered with the test. Typical hubris of a rich person thinking they're above those things - and ordinary people struggle to even get the money together (because getting a license costs around 1000-2000 €). Usually he'd be banned from getting the license in the next two years but it doesn't seem like he is. Preferential treatment? For all I care, he can fuck off.

i don't mean to offend any reus fans here but for some reason i'm not really shocked with the fact that he "didn't bother" to get a license. i always got the impression that he is kinda dense. lol

We have state photo IDs for non-drivers, but since a lot of people drive, anyway, it gets conflated with a driver's license. It generally goes through the same office. Other than passports (which aren't massively common), there isn't a national photo ID in the US. So you have to show your driver's license or photo ID equivalent a lot. I had to show my driver's license as ID at my doctor's office earlier this week (which was weird, but I guess it was to combat health insurance fraud since those cards generally don't have photos).

Money can't have been the issue and time - well, if he had spent the time where he was driving around without a license (and getting caught speeding 5 times!!! which means that he was probably almost always going too fast... and without a license... wtf!) in the driving school, he would have his license by now. There's really no excuse at all. The gall alone! Only something that a rich oblivious person would have the nerve to do. Immature, stupid, that doesn't even begin to cover it. And the comments in that tumblr post omg. I know now why I usually only watch football instead of following footballer's lives.

I think I've read about people running insuring cars over minor children with disabilities that mean they don't pay tax. Of course an adult has to sign any papers on behalf of the minor, and a person who doesn't drive the car won't amass the bonus you get for driving without accident.

Actually, I think this might be a strike against him if he actually wanted to go to Real, since isn't Audi one of their big sponsors? They might not be thrilled, haha. No yearly? new car for you, Marco!

We have points too. Higher speeding tickets amass such points, just like other offenses, and if you have enough (like Jogi Löw did), the license is gone. But that is not related to insurance. Only accidents etc. that mean you have to get money from the insurance will raise the rate. If you have an accident and choose to settle it yourself, the insurance will not be changed as well.

For prison time, you will generally need to kill someone too. The law will give the range of punishment for a certain offense as, say, "a fine up to 90 daily rates", and it will be used according to the circumstances, but in Germany being imprisoned takes some doing. They've been closing prisons for years, as incarceration rates are sinking. Technically, he could have been imprisoned, but that wasn't going to happen, as he doesn't seem to have caused any harm to anyone and no one would really benefit from locking him up.

Well, there are occasionally cases where they catch someone who has been without a license for years, but they tend to make the news, so I doubt it's that many people. And I think if you come up against someone without insurance, your own insurance takes over and tries to get the money back somehow.

Actually, you don't need to carry ID at all times. You have to be able to identify yourself somehow, so it's intelligent to do so, but it's not require (and would be rather oppressive).

German licenses don't expire, unless you get them taken away for driving offenses. You really only have to go through with them once.
