AMSL is delighted today to welcome guest-poster Brian Phillips, owner and proprietor of the exceedingly brilliant and regularly updated Run of Play. Enjoy responsibly!

As a visually dynamic and relentlessly well-paid football blogger, the one thing I can't do is make the world's top athletes stop sending me friend requests on Facebook. Every day, it gets a little more depressing. Sometimes I feel like I barely have time to pore over summer safari pics from people I don't remember but possibly went to high school with because I'm so busy crafting a response to the latest flurry of updates to Brooklyn Beckham's video page. What kind of a world is this? IS TECHNOLOGY CHANGING US AS BASIC PEOPLE, etc.

Fortunately, thanks to a keen problem-solving streak that I inherited from my male ancestors, I've figured out how to turn this "contemporary malaise" into a viable form of historical record-keeping. All it takes is a little elbow-grease and a familiarity with the principles of collation!

Personally my favorite is Stevie being a sensitive, poetic, lovelorn hipster. Oh and Martin being obsessed with Jenna Fischer.

PS: I just added Jay Spearing on facebook, let's see if he's not yet too famous to add me back. ;)

ETA: JAY SPEARING IS A JERK WHO LOOKS LIKE A POTATO. I could've been his Alex Curran. Actually no, wait, I like wearing heels too much. TAKE THAT, POTATO FACE. (jk)

English Dominance in the Champions League?

From the Bleacher Report

If this last Champions League knockout stage indicated or confirmed anything, it would be the clear dominance that the Premier league sides have enjoyed in the last few editions of the competition.

England's top four sides Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, and powerhouse Manchester United have all enjoyed great triumphs and success in Europe's premier competition over the years; but there's no era in history where I can remember them being so dominant and strong.

There was a time when believe it or not the Champions league was a competition with no clear favorites and a title all teams could hope to lift...not anymore. These days, the CL seems a title destined for the Premier league top four.

But just why is that? Is the Premier league stronger than La Liga, Serie A, and the Bundesliga combined; do they have stronger players? I personally doubt it. But they do seem to have something that others sides lack.

If anything, A.C Milan had squashed all these claims in my mind when a brilliant Kaka single-handedly carried his team unto the Finals by being decisive against Manchester United in the two semi final legs in 2007. They went on to lift the trophy in the final at Athens against Liverpool to the delight of all Serie A fans.

But now I know I was wrong, the simple fact that two English sides were represented in both the Semi final and Final alone in that edition should of been a clear sign of the Premier leagues newly found strength in the competition. It was just the beginning though; more was to come.

The 2008 Champions league was the one in particular that captivated my attention, Manchester United defied all odds as they ''steamrolled their way through to the finals comprehensively defeating everyone in the way."

Everyone team from Barcelona, Celtic to Chelsea, their fierce English Rivals was a merciless victim of the Red Devils. That English final in Russia was the beginning of a new Golden Era for English football, one I believe wont be easy to end.

This year could of been the perfect time to install a dent in that dominance as UEFA spurred some classic Italy vs England clashes and one Liverpool-Madrid game but the likes of Real Madrid, Roma, Inter and Juventus, although some fought proved no match for the well prepared and groomed stars of the Premier League.

For fans of the Serie A, La liga, (well maybe not Bundesliga) this round of 16 was painful to watch.

Is it luck or dominance for the Prem sides?

Bayern Munich were clearly the dominant side of this knockout round, thrashing Sporting at a record breaking 12-1 margin, yet Liverpool's triumph over Real Madrid, and Barcelona's thrashing of Lyon were what made the headlines. Why do you think this is? Is it because there is less favouring towards German clubs, or because the team they dominated were not considered a huge threat? Are Bayern as dangerous as as the other contenders who are favourites to take the title? Will they, like the Italians, struggle against the English sides? Hmmm...

City in Villa talks claim Valencia

VALENCIA vice-president Fernando Gomez has confirmed they have held talks with Manchester City regarding the possible transfer of star striker David Villa.

The Spanish club are in deep financial trouble and admitted for the first time last week that they may need to cash in on some of their prized assets in a bid to ease their problems.

Spain international Villa, who is arguably the club's most valuable player, penned a six-year contract with Valencia only last August, tying the 27-year-old to Los Che until 2014, but it now seems the Primera Liga outfit are resigning themselves to him leaving.

When asked if he could confirm that Valencia chiefs had met with two representatives from Manchester City regarding the sale of Villa, Gomez said: "Yes, it's true but they didn't make us an any offer.

"The president (Vicente Soriano) asked for a significant amount and they didn't agree."

Gomez did not reveal in the interview on Spanish radio what price tag they had put on Villa and his fellow Spain star David Silva, but insisted they would not be short-changed for either player.

"I think they are two very important players, with a lot of quality and, if we sell them, we are not going to sell them on the cheap," said Gomez.

He added: "I would like them both to stay. But we cannot discard anything and any of them (the players) could leave at the end of the season."

MEN: THE MOST RELIABLE SAUCE YOU'LL EVER FIND!

Random note, the City fans' comments on that story made me giggle rather a lot. Ahhh, pity me, I have to deal with City fans every damn day. I'm related to them.

Torres: Spanish Football Slow, Cannot Handle High Tempo Games

The hitman has said that Real Madrid could not handle the tempo and pace that Liverpool played at...

Mar 12, 2009 10:59:59 AM

Fernando Torres - Liverpool (PA)

All four of the Premier League's representatives progressed to the quarter finals of the Champions League at the expense Real Madrid and three Serie A sides, and Liverpool striker Fernando Torres feels that the Spaniards could not handle the tempo and pace that his side's clash with Real was contested at.

"I think we prepared the game better than them," Torres explained on the club's official website.

"The boss was brilliant in explaining how to play against them.

"The plan before the game was to play with intensity and with a high-tempo.

"Spanish football has quality but it is slower, so we knew it would be difficult for them if we played with intensity.

"I am very proud," he added. "I am proud at the performance of the team and the performance of the fans. We knew the atmosphere would be amazing but it was even better than we thought."

English sides constitute four of the final eight teams in the pot for the quarter final, while Spain have two teams, Germany one, and Portugal have one, too.

Basically they start congratulating Villareal, then when the song is playing Patricia asks who is singing then Dani says "The beatles, also called THE 4TH OF LIVERPOOL!!" and then he lets the newspapers make fun of the merengues because he believes in karma just like all the Barça supporters do.

Jajaja, even I make fun of Real Madrid and i'm a madridista, after crying there's nothing left than laugh.

Eduardo suffers new injury blow

Eduardo will miss the visit of Blackburn after picking up a groin problem during extra time in Arsenal's victory over Roma on Wednesday night.

The Croatia striker sustained the injury in the first period of the extra half-hour in Rome, and went on to miss his penalty.

The 25-year-old missed 11 months after breaking his leg last season, and has now suffered two minor injuries since making his return on February 16 - a common occurrence after long-term injuries as players seek to get back to match fitness.

"Unfortunately we have lost Eduardo with a groin problem," Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger told Arsenal TV online.

"He got it in the first half of extra time and I wonder if that stopped him from taking his penalty that well.

"It shows you that no matter what you do in training when you go to the uncontrolled movements of top, top level competition your body needs time to adjust. It is only a short-term injury but he is out for Saturday."

Bundesliga to mourn Winnenden tragedy

Players in Germany's first and second divisions will wear black armbands this weekend as a mark of respect for the 16 victims shot dead in the German town of Winnenden yesterday.

"We are deeply concerned. The events are a national tragedy," said German Football League (DFL) chairman Christian Seifert. "As a mark of our sympathy, players will wear black armbands this weekend."

The whole country is in mourning after 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer shot dead nine pupils and three teachers at a school in Winnenden before killing three other people in the south-west German town.

Shannon Boxx equalized in the 90th minute and the match went directly to penalty kicks, where the USA lost 4-3 after seven shooters.

Boxx’s goal came after an intense second half of searching for a tying goal to answer Lotta Schelin’s tally in the 18th minute. The Americans finally got it with seconds left in regulation time.   the rest
