Chatter from the sidelines
- John Stones considers moving house after receiving threats as Everton reject transfer request from Chelsea target This is getting nasty...
- Chelsea set to look elsewhere as Everton reject British record £37m offer for John Stones Unhappy faces all around, I'm sure. But Stones will get to play and if he keeps up his form and his game, he'll be able to leave next year with starting XI status
- Tottenham annoyed with West Brom over Saido Berahino as they close in on Bayer Leverkusen attacker Son Heung-Min #theytriedit, so Spurs are moving on
- Southampton's talent are struggling to break through - is Ronald Koeman losing faith in the prolific St Mary's academy? A big part of Southampton's early success was the faith in their academy, from new recruits to first team action (and then selling them off for big money). Koeman's brining in foreign talent as first port of call undermines their brand, or summat

Messi got men's UEFA's 2014/15 player of the year award

The players nominated for men's UEFA's 2014/15 of the year award were, from left to right, Luis Suárez, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi won with 97% of the vote

The lass in the white dress, I.... cannot spell her name. It's Cecila - and there are some hats on the Ss of her name. I really wish I'd done linguistics. Anyway, she won UEFA's female footballer of the year, just retired from the German National team, iirc?

This award was... awkward. The female emcee wasn't comfortable with speaking Spanish (I hear you, sister), so she read the questions in Spanish, and translated to the audience an approximate saying (because she speaks Italian fluently). She asked Suarez a question in Spanish, and was saved when the male emcee was all, "Oh, Suárez spent two years at Liverpool!" Ahhh, when one's team is an after thought *forever a bitter betty* Suárez was all, "I'll try" and he did. Well done to him

The right to bear bare arms! I see your guns, Cecilia! *makes note to add more reps to my arm exercises* She's radiant, or is that the bling?

Real Madrid's shirt for Champions League this season. They have a special kit for Champion's League. *sighs* Must be nice

Huh. I like this colour way. If it's discounted at end of season, I might buy it, even if it's Real Madrid. Bright blue on inky blue is my weakness, y'all
OP: done! Cheers, jeers, corrections and commentary pushback (as well as overlooked news that you want to share) you know the drill! I can't find much pictures for the Europa matches, can people share what the results were in the comments? All I know is that the Saints got knocked out. Damn the English and their lack of bottle for our coefficient! What about our hearts of oak, lads?

Good luck to Kampl, it's a shame he didn't work out for us :(
The Europa League draw starts in a little over half an hour, should I make a post?

Re: *does spittake*
Date: 2015-08-28 12:01 pm (UTC)I don't trust Rodgers at all. The thing is, it's widely believed that he has to get top 4 to keep his cushy job, I don't think the American owners are gung ho about Europa leagues and whatnot, although for the sake of the English coefficient, Rodgers really should take Europa league seriously, especially since he's stated that he wishes to work in Spain, and they seem to love Europa over there.
As for Spurs (despite myself, I have a soft spot for the team) all their players are pretty young and raw (half the team are academy grads), Pochettino is going to have a time. He (Pochettino) also needs to get his head around Europa. I am aware of his disdain for it, but you have to crawl before you can walk, much less run in the Champions League, so he better suck it up.

Indeed. Seems like Anderlecht is in really poor form rn, but Monaco should be a really good test to Pochettino so Spurs can see where they stand in the European scheme of things.
Re: RE: Re: *does spittake*
Date: 2015-08-28 01:09 pm (UTC)But seeing how Rodgers just made a hash out of CL last season when LFC could have gotten out of that group (Real Madrid on paper would have been the only team to match), I really have no faith in him getting through Europa. His new assistant coaches seem to be challenging him, and LFC have done decently so far, but we'll see if he takes this form abroad!

Yeahhhhh. The only good thing is that Spurs (although they've yet to win a match; 2 draws, 1 loss), is that they seem a lot more solid defensively, but Spurs need to have a come to Jesus talk with Vertongen (sp) because he's not switched on at all. Again, we have a lot of youth on side, and hopefully Pochettino can pace the team a bit, since last year was his first time managing both domestic and European commitments (with Espanyol and Southampton, it was always domestic commitments).
I'd love if Simeone could whisper in his shell like re: what Europa can do for a teams fortunes though. With Atleti, after they won Europea league, they just got into a grove and became damned near unstoppable. For a coach and player who plied his trade (for both playing and training) in Spain, Pochettino's dislike for Europa puzzles me. You'd think he'd be loving it like that.

Date: 2015-08-28 03:56 pm (UTC)Re: RE: Re: *does spittake*
Date: 2015-08-28 04:06 pm (UTC)To be fair, the Europa League is a slog compared to Champions League - Everton got as far as the quarter finals, and I'm sure from start of the CL to the end, Barcelona didn't have enough matches in terms of the slog as much as Everton did before they got the boot.
In addition, travelling to far flung Eastern European places (even though Spurs got a nice group on this side of the Schengen Visa territories this time around) isn't something to get your supporters saying, "You know what, I want to get visas and go to x place."
It's a slog, and then the FA looks at the Europa league commitments as nonsense (coefficient be damed!), so if you want to arrange an important match (like say, the Capital One cup final) after a far flung journey to wherever, the FA will tell you to do one.
In fairness to Pochettino, last season was his first time with Europa league, as well as domestic cups, and Spurs did well enough to get seeded. So, little steps.
With Spurs going forward, with their new stadium, and Levy claiming that money is tight, their ambitions are a bit more modest, tbh. The new academy talents in the squad are looking forward to Europa so that's something, I guess?

Date: 2015-08-28 12:01 pm (UTC)Anyway I keep seeing rumors about De Gea leaving on/before deadline day. I saw a site (I think it was goal.com) speculate that another keeper would be brought in immediately, and I'm willing to bet 5 euro that if this happens it will be Cillessen. Not passing any judgment on whether or not he is good enough for Man United, but it will be a terrible loss for Ajax :(. If it wasn't for him, Ajax would have been kicked out of the Europa League yesterday.
/Ok, I'm done being a negative (and speculating) Nancy.
In other news, Blind senior just made Robben captain of the Dutch NT! I always thought of him as the de facto leader anyway
re: Saints, saaammmeee
Date: 2015-08-28 12:12 pm (UTC)I keep hearing about Cillessen, we'll see though!
RE: re: Saints, saaammmeee
Date: 2015-08-28 06:14 pm (UTC)I absolutely agree :(. In addition, Koeman seemed so motivated to play European football. I hope that they will able to get back into the swing of things sooner or later :/. Their PL start hasn't been very promising so far....
I like Spurs, hopefully they get far this time. I understand Rodger's thinking in a way, getting back into top four will be stressful enough without the Europa league anyway. It's a shame though :/... Especially for the coefficient. Can you imagine England losing or coming close to losing their fourth CL spot? The press would have a field day
Re: re: Saints, saaammmeee

The press would have a field day, but the FA wouldn't care. Jose Mourinho has gone on record saying that with European sides, if there's a European match vs a domestic match, the local football associations will move it around. The most Scunthorpe (?) has said is, "Well, it's a pity if England lost its coefficient" MOFO WHAT? That's it?! And Dyke is about as useful as a chocolate teapot in these things.
With regards to Spurs- the lads seem keen, especially the younger ones like Ali Delli, and Harry Kane seems to have a soft spot for Europa because that's where he got his bedding in period, and Pochettino getting to trust him before unleashing him on the PL last year.
RE: Re: re: Saints, saaammmeee
Date: 2015-08-28 09:39 pm (UTC)I don't know too much about Rodgers, but I do hope that he gets his act together. Or, since I understand from your posts that he might not be the right man for the job, that both parties eventually move on....
Thanks for taking the time to share this all with me btw :). I highly appreciate it.
Re: Re: re: Saints, saaammmeee
Date: 2015-08-28 09:56 pm (UTC)I understand that in English football, we don't go by seniority like they do with Spanish clubs (for instance, with Real Madrid, Sergio Ramos is now captain because he's been there longer as well as having respect in the dressing room), whereas with England we tend to bang on character over seniority (for instance, Harry Kane has only been a Spurs senior player for a season, but he's named as vice captain, and I can see why; he's a leader, he works for the team, and although he's supposed to be the goal scorer, anyone who scores a goal, he's there to cheer. When Ramos had his hand on Lamela's throat, Kane was up in Ramos' face telling him to step back) that being said, Milner though?
But Brendan Rodgers and LFC supporters well, after last year, coming into this season there's been a divide. I like the team and players and hope that they win, but I don't like Rodgers so I don't even listen to his pressers, or read his interviews, and roll my eyes at his pictures. But if you aren't in full throated support to Rodgers *cough reddit LFC sub cough* you're considered a traitor and antii YNWA. Even though LFC is winning, it still hasn't been a balm to a split fan base.
The FA well, let's just say that them and UEFA have been given each other the cold shoulder since Plantini came to be the head of UEFA back whenever. He's never liked the English teams, games or structure. There's been a whiff of 'The English merchants' Napoleon style from that part of the world. That being said, Plantini said some nice things about the English league the other day. I'm still waiting on the other shoe to drop.
RE: Re: Re: re: Saints, saaammmeee
Date: 2015-08-29 08:58 am (UTC)Making Milner vice-captain is crazy. I just looked him up and he only arrived at LFC THIS transfer-window? What... What does he know about Liverpool? I'd be unhappy as a player if I got passed over like that.
Re: Re: Re: re: Saints, saaammmeee
Date: 2015-08-29 09:25 am (UTC)Long story short, yeah. In the last match, LFC lost 6-1 to Stoke. Stoke got 5 goals in by half time. LOLOLOL. The players just seemed lost and switched off, and given that in the same season Brendan Rodgers did the following: got into Champions League (yayy) but fielded a second string side in all Champions League matches, got knocked out in the first round in an easy group (save RM). Dropped into Europa and got knocked out in the first round. Didn't get into any finals on the domestic front, got found out with regards to team formation by second string sides. When players did poorly, said that 'We showed character' and pretty much autofellated himself through the whole year.
So at the end of the year when LFC came sixth (Spurs came 5th, even though they had the fifth worst goal defence in the league! I like Spurs, but fair is fair, their defence was terrible), Rodgers had spent £200 million on players (he said that for Spurs, when they spent £100 m post Gareth Bale they should have won the league), and said that at the end of three years, judge him- he's the first LFC manager in history to be at the club for three years and not had a trophy at the end of his time.
FSG (they own the Red Sox) called Rodgers in and had a meeting. Heaven knows what was said, because Rodgers was deemed to have spent all his goodwill, but the upshot from that meeting was, the transfer committee would be abolished, so Rodgers would have the resources (aka more money) to build his team, but in order for him to stay, his assistants (Pascoe and Marsh) were sacked, and they brought in assistant coaches to challenge him. Rodgers spins a yarn about how it was his choosing (my arse), but it is understood that this is Rodgers' last chance. He has the money, has the go ahead to choose his players (and get rid of those that he deems surplus to requirements), with the understanding that he has to get into top four or some sort of trophy.
Jurgen Klopp is supposedly a spectre in this, in that he's gone on record to say that he's worked with DOFs and transfer committee (when FSG was interviewing Rodgers, he didn't want a Director of Football, so the transfer committee was proposed - with Ayer, himself, and two other men in the club that escapes me right now) where they voted on players. That's now being scrapped, and for all intents and purposes, LFC is Brendan Rodgers team, in his image. It's a sword that he'll brandish to win, or one that he'll fall on.
Making Milner vice-captain is crazy. I just looked him up and he only arrived at LFC THIS transfer-window? What... What does he know about Liverpool? I'd be unhappy as a player if I got passed over like that.
Rodgers was keen on Milner. Citeh wanted Milner to stay, but Milner wanted to play his favoured position in midfield and allegedly, supposedly, he wanted Vice Captaincy or some assurances of his seniority of the sort (because he wasn't getting ENOUGH money coming on on a free, plus wages), and Rodgers gave it to him because 'Milner has character' and 'will give everything for the club' because Skertel and Lucas are just there at LFC, having a wank.
But winning is a balm, and if Rodgers keeps winning, I'm sure people will fall in line. I'm just looking at £300 million that he's spent, the players he's maligned, and wondering where the trophies are.
