Chatter from the sidelines
- John Stones considers moving house after receiving threats as Everton reject transfer request from Chelsea target This is getting nasty...
- Chelsea set to look elsewhere as Everton reject British record £37m offer for John Stones Unhappy faces all around, I'm sure. But Stones will get to play and if he keeps up his form and his game, he'll be able to leave next year with starting XI status
- Tottenham annoyed with West Brom over Saido Berahino as they close in on Bayer Leverkusen attacker Son Heung-Min #theytriedit, so Spurs are moving on
- Southampton's talent are struggling to break through - is Ronald Koeman losing faith in the prolific St Mary's academy? A big part of Southampton's early success was the faith in their academy, from new recruits to first team action (and then selling them off for big money). Koeman's brining in foreign talent as first port of call undermines their brand, or summat
- Real Madrid set for final David de Gea bid as Manchester United goalkeeper remains confident of transfer before deadline It will end soon, I'm sure.

Messi got men's UEFA's 2014/15 player of the year award

The players nominated for men's UEFA's 2014/15 of the year award were, from left to right, Luis Suárez, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Messi won with 97% of the vote

The lass in the white dress, I.... cannot spell her name. It's Cecila - and there are some hats on the Ss of her name. I really wish I'd done linguistics. Anyway, she won UEFA's female footballer of the year, just retired from the German National team, iirc?

This award was... awkward. The female emcee wasn't comfortable with speaking Spanish (I hear you, sister), so she read the questions in Spanish, and translated to the audience an approximate saying (because she speaks Italian fluently). She asked Suarez a question in Spanish, and was saved when the male emcee was all, "Oh, Suárez spent two years at Liverpool!" Ahhh, when one's team is an after thought *forever a bitter betty* Suárez was all, "I'll try" and he did. Well done to him

The right to bear bare arms! I see your guns, Cecilia! *makes note to add more reps to my arm exercises* She's radiant, or is that the bling?

Real Madrid's shirt for Champions League this season. They have a special kit for Champion's League. *sighs* Must be nice

Huh. I like this colour way. If it's discounted at end of season, I might buy it, even if it's Real Madrid. Bright blue on inky blue is my weakness, y'all
OP: done! Cheers, jeers, corrections and commentary pushback (as well as overlooked news that you want to share) you know the drill! I can't find much pictures for the Europa matches, can people share what the results were in the comments? All I know is that the Saints got knocked out. Damn the English and their lack of bottle for our coefficient! What about our hearts of oak, lads?

Date: 2015-08-28 04:06 pm (UTC)To be fair, the Europa League is a slog compared to Champions League - Everton got as far as the quarter finals, and I'm sure from start of the CL to the end, Barcelona didn't have enough matches in terms of the slog as much as Everton did before they got the boot.
In addition, travelling to far flung Eastern European places (even though Spurs got a nice group on this side of the Schengen Visa territories this time around) isn't something to get your supporters saying, "You know what, I want to get visas and go to x place."
It's a slog, and then the FA looks at the Europa league commitments as nonsense (coefficient be damed!), so if you want to arrange an important match (like say, the Capital One cup final) after a far flung journey to wherever, the FA will tell you to do one.
In fairness to Pochettino, last season was his first time with Europa league, as well as domestic cups, and Spurs did well enough to get seeded. So, little steps.
With Spurs going forward, with their new stadium, and Levy claiming that money is tight, their ambitions are a bit more modest, tbh. The new academy talents in the squad are looking forward to Europa so that's something, I guess?
