Manchester United Prepared for Record Breaking £95m Real Madrid Bid: Jose Mourinho Sets Sights on England Man Rooney

Sir Alex Ferguson is reportedly prepared for a record breaking bid from Real Madrid for England international Wayne Rooney as Jose Mourinho looks to bring in a new set of Galaticos this summer.

The Bernabeu outfit is set to back their new boss with a massive cash injection and the former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss has earmarked the 24 year old striker as his number one target.

Mourinho is hoping that the financial difficulties at Old Trafford would make the club’s owners consider such a massive offer for their prized asset but Ferguson is sure to fight against any potential sale.

Fabio Capello will be looking to Rooney to lead the line at the World Cup later this month and the former Everton man is hoping to continue his rich vein of form that saw him net 34 times in 42 starts. Clearly relations between Man United and Real Madrid have been strained for some time and Sir Alex is not enamoured by the club who has over the years nabbed a plethora of talent from the club most recently last summer when the La Liga giants stumped up £80m for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite Manuel Pellegrini spending over £200m last summer the club failed to wrestle the Spanish title from Barcelona and slumped out of the Champions League to Lyon. Mourinho has been brought in to reverse the club’s fall from grace in the past two seasons and the Portuguese manager has been told he will have large sums of money with which to re-invigorate his squad

What do Naomi Campbell and Louis Vuitton have in common with the World Cup?

One More )

This time, the World Cup trophy will be traveling in style.

French fashion and handbags house Louis Vuitton, with help from supermodel Naomi Campbell, has unveiled an elegant leather-bound case that it produced to carry the trophy to South Africa on Tuesday.

From the tournament's beginning in 1930, the World Cup trophy has always been transported in an armored metal case — largely for reasons of security.

But as Louis Vuitton spokesman Antoine Arnault put it: "There was no reason why security couldn't be synonymous with elegance."

The case features gold-colored clasps and the famed LV logo theme. Soccer governing body FIFA ordered it in March.

The fashion house also has a contract to make another one for the 2014 World Cup.

All the footballers are now wondering if the case comes with the trophy.

England 23 man Squad announced!

Theo Walcott left out of England’s World Cup squad.

Theo Walcott is the shock omission from England’s 23-man World Cup squad after Shaun Wright-Phillips was preferred by Fabio Capello.

Fabio Capello has dropped Arsenal winger Theo Walcott from his final 23-man World Cup squad, but Gareth Barry will travel after passing a last-minute fitness test on his injured ankle.

The Arsenal winger has always said that he could not take his place at the finals for granted, but he did not see Capello's rejection coming. The 21-year-old, the surprise inclusion in Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for the last World Cup in Germany, has been left devastated.

The decision to name Barry in the squad to travel to South Africa tomorrow means there is no place for Tottenham's Tom Huddlestone.

The other five players who were called by Capello to be told they would not be travelling were Tottenham's Michael Dawson, West Ham's Scott Parker, Sunderland's Darren Bent, Everton's Leighton Baines, and Manchester City's Adam Johnson.

England's opening game in Group C is against the United States on 12 June.

32 Countries, 31 Bloggers, One Trophy

So, I thought that this might be of interest for whomever. There are still apparently countries left and you don't necessarily have to follow the team offering up the contest. Let me know if there is a problem posting this! :)

From the site:

SoundersFC.com is looking for 32 fans to write brief stories following every World Cup match, painting a picture for the Sounders FC community showcasing the essence of every beautiful game(and of course how rubbish the other side or referee performed).

They can be rants; they can be raves; they can be accounts of glory or simply a chronicle of your day at the pub watching the match ... but please refrain from simply providing boring rehashes of what every fan can read on any sports page.

These stories, which will combine to represent all 32 countries and 64 matches in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, will be featured daily on SoundersFC.com showcasing the day's competition put together in a head-to-head format.

Given the structure of the World Cup, you will commit to writing at least three stories during the Group Matches, and then up to a total of seven stories if your country is so fortunate to make it to July 11.

Enter for as many countries for whom you feel passionate, but only one blogger will be selected to represent each country.

The 32 selected bloggers will receive a pair of tickets to the Sounders FC friendly against Celtic FC on July 18, 2010 and given exclusive access to a training session that week.

Entry deadline is Friday, June 4, 2010 at noon PT.

The 5 Requirements:

  • Love soccer and your country
  • Be as creative, passionate, and biased as you like
  • No profanity, vulgarity, or racist comments allowed (we will edit if necessary)
  • Commit to writing up to seven (7) stories
  • Must be able to email your post by 4 pm PT after each match
