Chelsea sack manager José Mourinho after disastrous start to title defence

Chelsea have parted company with manager José Mourinho. The Portuguese returned to the club in 2013 and won the Premier League title last season, but having sunk to 16th place in the table, the Stamford Bridge outfit have dismissed their manager.

Mourinho’s side have lost nine league games this season, the worst defence of a Premier League title ever. The latest loss was to Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City, 2-1 at the King Power Stadium. Afterwards Mourinho took the unusual step of criticising his players. “I feel my work is betrayed,” he said. “I worked four days in training for this match. I identified four movements where Leicester score a lot of their goals and in two of the four situations I identified they scored their goals. I went through it all with the players, you can ask them.”

After the defeat it had seemed a matter of when, not if, Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich would act, with the club in real danger of slipping into the relegation zone over the crowded festive period.

When asked after the Leicester defeat if he could hold on to his job, Mourinho said: “The only thing I can say is that I want to. I have no doubts and I think you know me well enough, three years this time, plus three years another time, that I am not afraid of a big challenge, and in this moment this is a real big challenge. I want to stay, I hope Mr Abramovich and the board want me to stay.”

Or US women. Yesterday, there was a viewing post for Abby Wambach's last match and when I mentioned Homare Sawa's retirement in it, all I got was a snarky comment about whether "she actually means it this time".

I can't take that place seriously in regard to football since I learned that the German NT was being Eurocentric and I presume racist for continuing to play their best against weaker teams rather than... I'm not even sure what they were supposed to do - pass the ball back and forth for sixty minutes? Yes, I'm sure that would have made the others feel loads better about being beaten.

Sure, there is a lot of inequality in football, but considering the low status women's football still has pretty much anywhere except I guess in the US, I'd look for the oppressors somewhere else. You don't see male NT footballers in very many countries have to finish their careers so they can get university careers and make a living after playing.

that is... i don't even know what to say to that. so in their minds condescendingly passing the ball back & forth in order not to score is the respectful & non racist alternative? ...okay then.

i still go there occasionally, but ontd is ridiculously shallow. they essentially follow internet trends and their concern about most social and political subjects is superficial at best. their #1 pastime is calling other people out, so it's almost impossible to have a constructive discussion there.

i didn't follow the WWC, so i didn't know that... i remember european teams were consistently hated on during the WC though, bc ~colonialism. which ok, but apples and oranges much?
