Chelsea sack manager José Mourinho after disastrous start to title defence

Chelsea have parted company with manager José Mourinho. The Portuguese returned to the club in 2013 and won the Premier League title last season, but having sunk to 16th place in the table, the Stamford Bridge outfit have dismissed their manager.

Mourinho’s side have lost nine league games this season, the worst defence of a Premier League title ever. The latest loss was to Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City, 2-1 at the King Power Stadium. Afterwards Mourinho took the unusual step of criticising his players. “I feel my work is betrayed,” he said. “I worked four days in training for this match. I identified four movements where Leicester score a lot of their goals and in two of the four situations I identified they scored their goals. I went through it all with the players, you can ask them.”

After the defeat it had seemed a matter of when, not if, Chelsea’s owner Roman Abramovich would act, with the club in real danger of slipping into the relegation zone over the crowded festive period.

When asked after the Leicester defeat if he could hold on to his job, Mourinho said: “The only thing I can say is that I want to. I have no doubts and I think you know me well enough, three years this time, plus three years another time, that I am not afraid of a big challenge, and in this moment this is a real big challenge. I want to stay, I hope Mr Abramovich and the board want me to stay.”

Shame half the team couldn't be sacked too!

Mou :( in his defence I truly don't believe all the blame for Chelsea's decline is on his shoulders. Cackling at how Abramovich clearly thinks getting rid of Mou will return Chelsea to winning ways, because he's going to get a reality check when the same dazed, tired and switched off players hit the pitch again.

I want to write so much more but I'm busy at work so inconvenient right now! but my parting comment is get rid of half of the first team who are only there to pick a pay cheque up, send Terry on his way to MLS because he is done in the PL now and utilise their youth academy for a damn change!!

NOOOOOOOOOO

Damn it! I have such conflicted feelings over Mourinho. A Liebestod if you will.

Love in that he's the one who seduced me into watching PL football, and even flirted with following Chelsea because of him. I bought an LG phone because he advertised it, and when he said that he was 'a special one', he was the shocking daub of colour against the grey haired, grey faced coaches of the game. Because of him, I started to understand what the notion of tactics was about, how Mourinho created a slight of hand with personality, charm and a good Aramani suit, to the honours that he racked up.

In the same breath, Mourinho hastened a death - he of the 'proven' over the academy talents, which hastened the distance of football from hometown lads to the professional disinterest of foreigners; of tying a big money spend to a team as much as a moral virtue. Himself and Abramovich turned the game from what it was to what it is now: the star footballer, the manager as cult of personality, putting media in the forefront of newspaper copy. The notion of tension and fireworks, although it quickened one's imagination, and fired up the red tops, just undid him in the end. Mourinho, I followed you from Chelsea, to Madrid, and back to the PL once more. I'll see you in my google mentions.

i mean. it has happened. gladbach lost their first 5 games in the BL + 2 CL games and Favre left even though the club wanted him to stay. then they went undefeated in next 11 BL games without him. even beating bayern, but i don't follow chelsea or the PL so who knows really! lol

Chelsea will get a new coach bounce, which is what they need. Then, I'm assuming that come January, certain players will go, and the same thing for summer. What's Hiddinck's attitude towards academy talents, do you know?

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the reasons (in addition to circling the relegation drain) why Mourinho got shown the door was his refusal to integrate academy talents. Chelsea has spent a LOT of money on the academy, and there's been whisperers that Rueben Loftus Cheek is angling for a loan and not wanting to sign a contract because he isn't getting any playing time. Also, Chelsea's loan talents have been doing decently well for their loan clubs (I think one is a forward at Fiorentina and he pushed them to the knock out stages of Europa).

Oh it could definitely happen and like you mention, it has happened for another club. The thing is, if you look at the Chelsea players currently, there's no drive behind their performances.

Knowing just a bit about monchengladbach, those players were having a bad time but there was still the passion and drive to want to do better, doubled with the fact that the supporters would still turn up to every game and will them on. Both of those facts aren't the case with Chelsea on the whole.

Chelsea has rode the highs the past couple of years with their older players still being fast and fit, as well as new signings breathing life into the team too. But that was then and now either the experienced players have gone or (in Terry's case) aren't good enough any more. Even the bigger signings seem to be jaded with it all.

I would love (okay not love but wouldn't mind!) being proven wrong but Chelsea needs a clean sweep - flush out the jaded players, get some fresh blood into the team to actually start playing like a team again. Getting rid of just a manager isn't IMO going to solve all of their problems.

that is very true about the injuries. start of the season seems like a lifetime ago. are there any rumors about who they want to hire?

[identity profile] aquaecolore.livejournal.com 2015-12-17 03:57 pm (UTC)(link)
do they not recognize the drama this post would bring??

They're linking up with Ancelotti?

I don't think Mourinho is a Bayern kind of guy though. But for real, why is Guardiola leaving bayern? Didn't he like the set up? They really catered to his every whim.

the odd thing was Gladbach got some major injuries after Favre left and it's only seemed to catch up with them the last couple weeks.

anyway, i'm not sure Favre would want to pick up a team in a similar situation he left Gladbach in. Well, hopefully.

Not sure if Marca are trolling or...? but Mourinho, el ideal para sustituir a Benítez (http://www.marca.com/futbol/real-madrid/2015/12/17/5672d89d46163fc81f8b458c.html) lmao such a mess.

As long as they don't come after Simeone during the summer...

i don't know if it's 100% sure he's leaving yet. But he left Barcelona as well when they didn't want him to go, no? i think.

i guess he might get bored when things are too easy. i do wonder how Bayern would manage with someone else currently. They'd probably still be doing quite well.

I'm sure. bayern is an exceedingly well run club. They have good players, good scouts, a solid DoF, have money so they don't have to sell their best players (and can refuse funds when certain teams come calling).

But where would Guardiola go? Serie A, League 1? I can't see him coming to the PL at all, tbh.

Great idea! When it all went down in flames the first time,  the second time will be a success.

Simeone seems happy where he is, no?

[identity profile] jazzypom.livejournal.com 2015-12-17 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Didn't he up and extend his contract sometime last season?

Mourinho for Real Madrid? Aye aye aye! Ronaldo would leave, post haste.
