Women's World Cup USA 5- 2 Japan

Credit to the yanks for getting the sport before it was even a 'thing' world wide for women. Title X, right?

All 16 national federations for the teams that failed to get out of the group stage at the 2014 men’s World Cup received $8 million from FIFA. That was $6 million more than the winning national federation will receive at this year’s Women’s World Cup, and that is just the start of the disparity.”

I thought the match was today, LOL at me. Anyway, just as well, the scoreline suggests a slaughter. Not Germany vs Brazil type, but still, if I'd stayed up for that I'd have been annoyed

USA got a hat trick against Japan in sixteen minutes, and The Daily Mail calls it 'a thriller'. LOL
OP: Done! Any cheers, jeers, corrections and commentary pushback, you know the drill! Cheers

Date: 2015-07-06 07:22 am (UTC)It's Title IX, actually.
Miro Klose gave an interview.
Date: 2015-07-06 07:45 am (UTC)Rome - Record goal scorer Miroslav Klose hasn't fully ruled out a comeback in the German football national team. He still talks on the phone with Joachim Löw, "we talked just a few weeks ago", Klose told BILD. They did not speak about a possible comeback and it is "not on the agenda at the moment", said Klose, who however also said "One should never say never".
The 37-year-old had retired after the World Cup title last year like captain Philipp Lahm and defense leader Per Mertesacker. With 71 goals, he has scored the most in the national team, and with 137 reached the second-most caps after Lothar Matthäus (150).
Basically, he is "glad that I didn't have any injuries lately", the striker explained. He recently extended his contract with Lazio Rome until 2016. "But for my 37th birthday I got a text from Basti Schweinsteiger - it began 'Hello, old codger", he says. He answered "that he already played for Bayern when I was still standing on the roof as a carpenter. After all, my professional career really only started at 21. Therefore I'm now allowed to play a bit longer, too."
With 16 goals, Klose is also record goal scorer at World Cups. He wouldn't put it past especially one former teammate to break that record. "Thomas Müller could do it. He already has ten World Cup goals now. If he stays healthy - and I count on that - he will still play two tournaments. Müller has an instinct for goals", Klose explained, and added smirking: "And additionally he takes the penalties too, which I was never allowed to do of course".

Date: 2015-07-06 09:31 am (UTC)wait, why is that?
I think the decision to retire was the right one tbh, better to retire on a high

Date: 2015-07-06 01:08 pm (UTC)I also think the decision to retire was also the right one. However, aren't the rumours that Per and Lahmpoleon will guide the bbs in the olympics? I think that is a good choice. I wouldn't protest having them back for Euro too since the team seems teetering on the edge, but I think Fips coming back would place question marks on Basti's captaincy (not that he's a bad captain, but only that Lahmpoleon was the previous captain so it'd be a weird dynamic). I think having Legends on the olympic team would definitely give the bbs something to be excited about. OTOH, having them + Miro back would be weird because Germany's main problem is still strikers+defenders, and bringing back experienced strikers and defenders isn't going to help that.
Anyway, what a cute interview. So excited to see Lazio in the UCL next year because I get to see him play ^.^

Date: 2015-07-06 08:13 am (UTC)Was WWC even commented widely commented in most of the countries? I've seen maybe 5-lines maximum notes in most of the newspapers (or nothing at all) here and maybe 1 tweet a day from the pages I follow online. Everyone writes about F1 and Wimbledon instead.
Anyway, those 'another Hiroshmia' and 'Pearl Harbour' jokes are really ugly. As much as I can understand SOME WWII jokes between SOME European countries, I cannot imagine the shitstorm that would happen if Germany trended something about Auschwitz during Poland-Germany match.
And today is International Kissing Day, here's a kiss for you from Juventus:

Comparing the women's and men's WC is ridiculous. The WWC was a success so there is a great chance there will be more sponsors and more money next time round.

Date: 2015-07-06 04:41 pm (UTC)This was something admitted by FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke, who has said that women cannot expect to be paid the same as their male counterparts for many World Cups to come.
"The comparison between the prize money of the men's World Cup in Brazil to the women's World Cup in Canada, that's not even a question I will answer because it is nonsense," he said.
"We played 30th [Men's] World Cup in 2014 and we are playing the seventh women's World Cup, so things can grow step-by-step.
"We are still another 23 World Cups before potentially women should receive the same amount as men.
and I'm in the US, so we were saturated with coverage - which is a plus for the US because we are desperately clawing to ensure that the NWSL remains intact. this is their third attempt to make a women's pro league work here in the US, but I have lots of issues with the whole college/drafting system that really makes it difficult. my cousins in Mexico are in the DF right now in our old neighborhood and they said everyone in their area was watching & talking about the WWC. idk how much it was but it was enough that they got a good group of 50+ people to watch at a block party - even after Mexico was eliminated.
I always feel bad that more people don't try to show support for women's so the narrative is that the US women are really brilliant & yadda yadda (which they are), but our domestic league is struggling so hard to keep going. I mean, the minimum salary is $6,842 (6,174 in Euros), while the maximum salary is up to $37,800 (34,114). And they have salary caps of the higher $200,000 for most players.
the point is people should make attempts to generate interest. women's football is never going to be equal to men's because people just don't want to care. which is why coverage is minimal/barely growing.

Date: 2015-07-06 01:14 pm (UTC)I think it was the right thing to do. I kind of like Messi and would like to see Arg pick up some international awards during his tenure, but the media keep going on and on about how he is GOAT and then Arg doesn't win the finals and it feels super sham-y. I'd be shocked if Messi didn't feel that way himself. Anyway, I'd like to see less individual awards since this is a team sport anyway. bleh.
Jazzy, Barca can sign players, but they just can't play until next January. But I guess if it's an opportunity to play at Barca + getting free money for 6 months, that's not a terrible deal, is it? :P Thomas Vermaelean got free money all of last year. And some nice trophies.

Date: 2015-07-06 01:23 pm (UTC)it's garbage like this. USWNT wins two WWC in 16 years and some US outlet is trying to argue they're the ~greatest World Cup dynasty of all time, comparable to the great Brazil / Germany / Italy men's teams of old.
lawd.
It's so embarrassing. The women's field is less competitive and they still couldn't take it home more than half the time they played. If any women's team is a dynasty, it's the German women's, who's won 8 of the 9 European championships they've participated in.

Date: 2015-07-06 01:41 pm (UTC)Um, what. We don't (at least, I don't) ignore third place playoff at all. Yeah, it's a battle of losers but third place is still an achievement (and a medal).
And no one ever looks at 'dynasty runs'. It's all about titles.

Date: 2015-07-06 04:55 pm (UTC)I know lots of people are disappointed that the WWC doesn't have the same ~appeal~ as the men's, but we still haven't hit our 10th Cup yet so I'm very optimistic for the future. I'm super excited for the future because more participation for other nations will hopefully allow for more growth worldwide. I'm counting down the days until I see El Salvador represented for the women (though I'll be waiting forever).
and Title IX is pretty important for women's sports in general. however, this article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/title-ix-was-great-for-female-athletes-and-terrible-for-female-coaches/2012/07/26/gJQAAFK1BX_story.html) kind of highlights how women are screwed over anyway, since the lucrative positions are now generating more $$ and allowing men to occupy the coaching positions for women teams. if anyone is interested, I'd recommend watching those Nine for IX documentary pieces. the segment on Venus was directed by Ava DuVernay and it was amazing.
