Mourinho accused of using a homophobic slur before CSKA Moscow vs Real Madrid

title or description

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has been accused of making a homophobic slur prior to Tuesday's Champions League game away to CSKA Moscow.

Mourinho is alleged to have called match officials "faggots" prior to the 1-1 draw in Moscow.

The European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation (EGLSF) has filed a complaint against the Special One, while co-president Louise Englefield has urged UEFA to take action against the former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss.

"Homophobia is unacceptable from anyone in football, much less from one of the game's most senior figures," Englefield was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying.

"We are deeply disappointed that Mr. Mourinho is casually using homophobic terms of abuse in his workplace.

"It is especially sad that these comments have been made during the International Football v Homophobia campaign week.

"As long-standing partners of the FARE network, we call on UEFA to take action and impose appropriate sanctions."

NOW WITH ADDED VIDEO PROOF

at last there is a reason for my hatred of him that isn't "but i hate all the teams he coaches/he's an asshole, really"

Apparently, the ugly from his hair cut seeped into his brain and took root. Ugh.

madridistas have been talking this over for days. it's just. really disappointing.

I was wondering when this will be posted.
I feel really disappointed and surprised even. I know his media tactics but not this.

And am I right in thinking this hasn't been reported by many major media outlets? It's on goal.com and daily mail but hardly anywhere else.

not surprised. i've always considered him to have a nasty streak. i just hope action is taken and with EGLSF being involved...surely this won't be ignored.
perhaps i'm being too optimistic...

the use of the word was wrong, but this story makes it sound like he yelled YOU'RE ALL FAGGOTS at the match officials. he was unprofessional and perpetuated the derogatory trend of maricon being synonymous with asshole. which is wrong. but he didn't yell FAGGOT at a match official. why is it so hard to call people out for doing shitty things without construing them as even shittier things?

he's got some nerve saying " esos maricones".

I'm really tempted to say: "He's a cunt"...

But I figure that most people here probably don't know me well enough to appreciate what I'd be saying with that. Or the almost physical pain it causes me to make a point in such a manner. So I won't ;).

And for those who *do* know me well enough, or have witnessed my rants in the past and/or can figure it out... it's not a defence or justification, merely an observation :)

Yes, the use of the word was reprehensible and as a Madridista, I am deeply disappointed in Mourinho.

However, the way that this story is being reported is also disappointing.

Oh dear. Where's [livejournal.com profile] staystranger ? We need her wisdom.

fucking ew. shut up, mou.

[identity profile] mardia.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
FFS, Mourinho. This is incredibly disappointing/awful, and shows not just that Mourinho's an asshole (bad enough he's using that language, even WORSE that he's directing it to referees, jfc, way to be unprofessional as fuck) but it shows just how prevalent casual homophobia is in football still.

Also, I'm just gonna say it: I get that Spanish culture is different from English culture, and that sometimes translation issues can occur. I get that. But I don't see how that's happening here, in THIS case, and I don't get any sense of a "bias" from this article at all. It reports what he said. The fact that the word is considered to be synonymous with asshole doesn't make Mourinho's behavior okay, it just highlights the fact that homophobia still exists in Spanish society, like it exists in most societies. If a fourteen year-old kid in Iowa or wherever calls his friend a "fag", it's not okay even if he just meant to say "asshole". And Mourinho is a) a grown man and b) a professional that represents Real Madrid, so he doesn't even have the excuse of being young enough not to know better.

[identity profile] grrliz.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Mou, I find you far less delightful when your ability to be an asshole manifests itself this way rather than as fabulous arrogance.

[identity profile] meretricula.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I really can't sometimes. ugh. when I was in Spain last year I went to see Barca B play and I heard people yelling that in the stands. there were two little boys sitting next to me and I wanted to cover their ears. I wanted to cover the ears of the kids on the pitch! NOT ACCEPTABLE, EVER, IN ANY CONTEXT.

[identity profile] ene-de-nena.livejournal.com 2012-02-24 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, Mou..

This is offending and stupid enough as it is without it having necessarily to be considered as an insult to homosexuals on Mourinhos side. I mean, there'd be many cultural connotations / factors that should be taking into account to be perfectly fair here..
And with this, I'm not trying to justify or defend Mourinho, as I don't know what's really on his head.
Just trying to make a point from the point of view of someone who's used to swear on a daily basis. In spanish. If I'd realize half the times of what I'm really saying (to myself, in many occasions), I'd punch my own face. Hard.

I'd like to be able to explain it better..

they should fine him a hundred thousand euros.

Is Blatter going to propose they shake hands on this one too?

[identity profile] myscheherazade.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Disappointed? Yes. Surprised? Lol no.
Anyone who is - welcome to the real world. It's shit. So let's not pretend otherwise.

Glad a story like this is getting picked up of only by blogs. Casual slurs that reinforce oppressive stereotypes are not okay, anywhere. Anytime. Can only hope everybody's indignation translates into longstanding motivation rather than just momentary self-righteousness.

[identity profile] difusion.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
All the comments here are actually more disappointing than the video itself.

None of you can read or watch something and comprehend it appropriately. If you had, derogatory language would not be the first thing you thought of. It doesn't matter what team you support, or how much useless hatred you have for the man, the point here is that Mourinho made a dumbass move and used a slang that is very closed to "fag" and slightly by "asshole" in front of the media and towards UEFA's laziness. It was very stupid, and stupid things happen everyday and even by you, so calm down and stop exaggerating what stupidity was done here as if you're the media's children. Because I highly doubt that you all are not contradicting yourselves right now.

This hardly means he's a homophobe, or that anyone here is condoning what he's done. What it means is that José should have kept his mouth closed, and that the media could care less or more about this situation.

Jesus. It's okay to think once and a while. I promise.

my faith in humanity is steadily sinking.

ughhhh I wish he'd keep his mouth shut.

disgusting and disappointing

I probably couldn't be more dissapointed in Mou, but I find it really weird that some of you seem to be happy about this cuz this finally proves that Mou is as awful as you think he is, wth.

[identity profile] templargirl.livejournal.com 2012-02-25 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
People are judging him without knowing the context of that specific phrase in Spanish, specially in Spain where you call "cabrón" or "maricón" your friends as a token of affection, in fact when you actually want to offend a gay person, that isn't exactly the word of choice for you to use.

Hell, this is just like Iker saying "La puta madre que me parió" (the motherfucking bitch who gave birth to me) and people bashing him for it.

Of course people in their high horse will get more IAWTC, A+++ and rest of comments.

SMH.

I'm more upset about the fact that some people use the Spanish equivalent of the word "faggot" as a term of endearment in some countries.

Also, calling Mourinho a homophobe over this one incident is stupid on so many levels.

I'm just curious, when they say that he's using it casually, wouldn't that mean he's done it before?

I mean this "We are deeply disappointed that Mr. Mourinho is casually using homophobic terms of abuse in his workplace" makes me think that he's used it (and it has been noted) before, but I guess that's how I'm reading it? Because if it was a one time thing, wouldn't they just say that he used a homophobic term?
