Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has been accused of making a homophobic slur prior to Tuesday's Champions League game away to CSKA Moscow.

Mourinho is alleged to have called match officials "faggots" prior to the 1-1 draw in Moscow.

The European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation (EGLSF) has filed a complaint against the Special One, while co-president Louise Englefield has urged UEFA to take action against the former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss.

"Homophobia is unacceptable from anyone in football, much less from one of the game's most senior figures," Englefield was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying.

"We are deeply disappointed that Mr. Mourinho is casually using homophobic terms of abuse in his workplace.

"It is especially sad that these comments have been made during the International Football v Homophobia campaign week.

"As long-standing partners of the FARE network, we call on UEFA to take action and impose appropriate sanctions."

at last there is a reason for my hatred of him that isn't "but i hate all the teams he coaches/he's an asshole, really"

I think that the point that my illustrious colleague is making is that there are subtleties of tone, delivery and context that the articles do not appear to pick up on, or perhaps chose to ignore. Such things can alter the meaning significantly. Language is a complex thing, and communication is much more than just the words that are said. (But you know that. lol.)

Dude, I didn't dispute what he said. I said the article makes it sound like he yelled it at them.

Later, yes. I was referring to the single bolded "called match officials faggots" sentence. I think that's misleading.

It sounds like he went up to a match official and called them a faggot.

Ah I see, but I don't think most people are paying show much attention as to how it was delivered, but that it was unfortunately used.

But there's a difference in how it's delivered. There is a difference between using slang in passing and walking up to someone and using a gay slur. They're both wrong, but one has much stronger implications of homophobia.

I didn't say it wasn't wrong. I've said it was wrong about 50 times. I said that it didn't inherently mean he was a homophobe, the way that a more targeted slur might suggest. That doesn't make it not wrong.
