Although they were leaked months ago, the new green away kit for the German national team has officially been announced!

The back of the shirt (around the neck?) will read "1972 - der Beginn einer Erfolgsgeschichte, 2012 - ein neues Kapitel wartet darauf, geschrieben zu werden", which someone on Tumblr translated roughly as "1972 - the beginning of a success story, 2012 - a new chapter is waiting to be written".

The shirts will be officially unveiled at Germany's friendly against France on February 29th in Bremen, although it will be available on the DFB website and through Adidas as early as February 24.

In related news, here we have Schweini and Thomas Muller playing a weird retro Mannschaft version of Memory.

When the kits first got leaked I was like "Eh...." but they've grown on me over time and now I love their retro throwback-ness (there is not enough of this in this sport, IMO) and I've been checking the various kit sites obsessively to see if these are in stock yet. People, I have worn my black Schweini 2010 away kit so much that this is what has happened to the letters:

You can see the hole in the #7 and if you click the photo to get to the bigger picture, you can see how the gold lettering is peeling off in places, e.g. around the bottom of the E, etc. (It's also not really as dusty and dirty as it looks!) I need a new shirt! Ugh, but I love the black one so much, it is my favourite of all the shirts I own.

It looked good on the boys certainly. But actually there were several rather glaring design flaws with it overall.

It was worn with the usual black shorts for example - which have white stripes (as always). That didn't match the black shirt, which had gold. The boys looked great (of course - they always do) but in some pictures the boys looked a little fore-shortened as a result.

There was also an inexplicable shiny black stripe along the back of the jersey It was invisible on TV, but it looks odd when you wear it (I always think to myself: what is this black stripe doing here?).

But you know - it's been proven. Stick the boys in a plastic bag and it will take on sex-appeal. I'm sure the green will look fabulous once it's been stuffed with a German boy, rolled it on the ground a few times, become drenched in sweat, come untucked etc...

I couldn't bear the new white jersey until we played Ukraine. Twenty minutes in, a few grass-stains - and damn it - the boys (and kit) were gorgeous! I was watching the kit transform from frumpy to HAWT in no time.

Yeah, the mismatched shorts always bothered me. The black shiny stripe was visible on the super-tight version of the kit though (check pictures of Lukas, Mesut, and Basti from WC 2010, compare to pics of Thomas and Philipp, especially under flash); considering my kit doesn't have it I assumed that was just part of the distinction.

But I do love the old away, mostly because of the way it evokes the black-red-gold of the flag and the elegant red hemming. Also red and gold is one of my favorite color schemes.

I do have the feeling that this one will grow on me much like the current home grew on me, but i'm still glad i got a black away when i could.
