German National Team Not Aryan Enough For Butthurt Fabio Capello

German National Team Not Aryan Enough For Butthurt Fabio Capello

(You know - that Italian manager who represents England).

Capello calls on Platini to act after swipe at Germans for ‘stealing talent’
By Matt Barlow (dailymail.co.uk)

"Odd ones out?" Let's play "spot the non-Aryan".

Fabio Capello has taken a swipe at Germany for adopting players of Turkish origin and called upon football’s rulers to end the drain of talent from poorer countries.

Capello is still haunted by England’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of the Germans in last summer’s World Cup and raised the issue of citizenship when he addressed the Dubai International Sport conference.

‘A line needs to be drawn,’ said the Italian. ‘Richer clubs are talent-scouting and stealing players by bidding higher and not thinking about the consequences for those countries.

‘These players are acquiring new passports. Germany had five of Turkish origin who opted to represent them and we all know what happened.’

Germany’s squad for the 2010 World Cup final in South Africa contained 11 players who could have qualified for other countries. Capello claims Turkey would have been far stronger with the ‘five’ who opted to represent Germany but his facts are muddled. Two players of Turkish descent were in Joachim Low’s squad — Mesut Ozil and Serdar Tasci — and both were born in Germany.

Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski, who both scored against England in Bloemfontein, were born in Poland. Podolski moved to Germany aged two and Klose aged seven.

Ozil's ear-flick is insufficiently German for Fabio Capello. It is a Turkish ear-flick.

The crux of Capello’s complaint is about young players bought by rich clubs, lured from poor countries and nationalised, and he expects UEFA president Michel Platini to tackle the issue.

‘Decisions need to be made,’ said Capello. ‘Players can be bought, especially when they come from poorer backgrounds. I do not accept that, having trained a player, a different team can steal the player from me. UEFA should pass rules allowing people to reap the seed that’s been sown instead of having talents leave when they receive a major offer.

‘I’ve spoken to Michel Platini and he is resolute. Clubs will be forbidden to steal young  players from abroad.’

Capello denied England had stolen Danny Welbeck, who qualified for Ghana, saying: ‘He was born and brought up in England. I spoke to his family and they were fine.’

And a second article on the subject, referencing the DFB response.

German FA upset with Capello

December 30, 2011
From ESPN

Fabio Capello
Italian manager of England and general asshole, Fabio Capello.

• Capello blasts "player theft"

Speaking in Dubai on Thursday, Capello said rules should be brought in that prevented clubs "stealing'' youngsters from another country, which in turn tips the balance on the international stage.

Capello used the example of Germany, who took 11 players to the last World Cup who had dual eligibility, including star man Mesut Ozil and defender Serdar Tasci, both of Turkish origin. They helped Germany beat England 4-1 in Bloemfontein, a scar which has not healed with Capello and continues to fester heading towards Euro 2012.

Although the DFB are not interested in making a public statement on Capello's comments, it is known they are not happy and privately have questioned the Italian for getting his facts wrong.

In the case of Ozil, a third generation Turk, he was born in Germany and represented the country at all youth age groups, in much the same way as Manchester United's Danny Welbeck - who has opted for a career with England despite being eligible for Ghana through his parentage.

The DFB are not alone in drawing a parallel between the two cases, even though Capello has insisted there was a difference and he consulted with Welbeck's parents before handing the 21-year-old his competitive debut in Montenegro, which ended any chance of him representing Ghana...

maybe it makes me satan in training but i somewhat get what he means. most players that are eligible for more than 1 team tend to pick the "larger" team or more successful team, competition-wise. but pointing the finger at germany means pointing it at several other teams with players in the same situation. besides, if his strife is clubs throwing money at young players, the corruption of those tactics can be found at club level as well as international.

besides, it's not like ozil and players are running around saying they are ride-or-die Germans and denying any other origins. they acknowledge their other cultures (ie. ozil recently visiting turkey). they make a decision for their career, not for their complete self-identity. whatever culture they feel they belong more to is their personal business and doesn't always equate to the team they play for (which i know sounds contradictory and "if you don't like our country, don't play for it" type mentality)

furthermore, i don't see him bitching about people that change NTs mid-career or don't play for their initial team they are eligible for then get citizenship to play for another. didn't Deco do something like that with brazil and portugal? not sure, i may be confusing him for someone else.

except the Germany-Turkey situation doesn't follow that, because from what I remember before Özil nearly every Turkish-German player opted for Turkey, and many still do (Nuri Sahin, anyone?). plus, he's being super hypocritical when you consider Wellbeck's situation, which he says is OK because he talked to their parents. I guess no one talked to Özil's parents? Of all the players eligible for another country in the German squad, all but Cacau grew up in Germany, has a German parent, etc. Where do you "draw the line"? Can a kid growing up in a country never represent it if his parents are from somewhere else?

Capello is just incoherent, honestly.

so, all of the german-turks/etc's families were NOT "fine" with it? they're all really pissed off they're not playing for other countries?

this is silly. sorry your team isn't as good as germany's, fabio.

:| oh stfu Capello and get over it it's not our fault your coaching sucks (seriously, I like England and I wish them to do better)

Besides - you know what else Germany is doing? Taking far too many DORKS.

What happens when the whole team is nothing but dorks and like, England is running low on them? How will they compensate? More New Wave bands?

...okay i could live with the new wave synth bands...

STILL. GERMANY IS TAKING ALL THE DORKS.

on a more serious note, I think it's cool that so many people WITH multiracial / multinational backgrounds are playing because it speaks highly of A) their own desire to play for the team and B) that Germany has so many different players from different backgrounds that are willing to represent them

BACK TO BEING A MORON I GO

[identity profile] sumrndmgrl.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
i think having multinational players is awesome! creates diversity both in the lockerroom and on the field in terms of tactics. i know there are some people though that are more into a specific style in terms of nationality. like playing "german" or playing "like traditional england" or something so i think they are wary of ~their team having majority multinational members. of course i don't agree with this ~pure race~ mentality at all but i've come across it before with older fans of the sport.

[identity profile] mentalblockade.livejournal.com 2011-12-30 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
first of all:
the headline with the Aryans is inappropriate in my opinion. this term was used by the nazis. it was false then and it still is because Aryans are actually originally from Persia or so. as much as i disapprove of capello's statement, i wouldn't want to put him in that context.

second:
Capello should have googled the german NT. except Cacau, everyone was either born or grew up in germany. neither the DFB nor one of the clubs brought them here. it was their parents really.
so why wouldn't they have the right to play for the german nt if they chose to??

third: one should ask him why he coaches the english nt when he's italian...

fourth: the french nt would be empty if it wasn't for their non-originally-french players.

fifth: having players with different origins in the nt shows a positive trend, not a negative one, mr capello!

sorry for the rant. i'm kind of sensitive in that matter

Who are you to tell who can play for the German national team and who can't, Fabio?

[identity profile] la-fiora.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
"Richer clubs are talent-scouting and stealing players by bidding higher and not thinking about the consequences for those countries"
until governing bodies decide otherwise, a club or NT is not required or expected to "think about the consequences for those countries". it's in their best interest to spend the money they can afford on strong players.

"Germany had five of Turkish origin who opted to represent them and we all know what happened"
...they played well for a team they wished to play for and qualified to play for

maybe capello should be thinking about the consequences for the italian NT since he is coaching the english one and not them. clearly he was poached from italy.

oh, capello

[identity profile] marsyke.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 07:35 am (UTC)(link)

hahahahahahaha as soon as I saw this I thought of you and what you would say about it...

Obviously I don't need to hash out all the reasons why Mr. Capello's conception of citizenship and national identity is lacking insight and thoughtfulness, but let's just say even if there is such a thing as "stealing" a grown-ass man who makes his own decision about which NT to play for...wouldn't Turkey calling up Sahin, Altintop et. al. also be "stealing" in a sense?* Because the German infrastructure developed them as players and then they played for another federation as adults? Every time the Turkish NT makes money off a poster with Altintop's glittering perfect white teeth on it they're depriving the German people of the dividends of their healthcare tax dollars but not their eyebrow waxers' tax dollars lololol amirite

*Let me reiterate that I don't believe this, just making a point. Everybody play wherever the hell you want to and are eligible! NT caps for everyone!

It did give me a good laugh, though. So thanks for that, Capello!

[identity profile] marsyke.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
It was the someone from the Turkish federation who said this summer that he tried to convince the players from the German U17 world cup squad to play for the Turkish NT.
Letting the DFB invest in a player and then getting him to switch alliance is more qualified as 'stealing' to me.

It should be a personal decision for a player. I don't think you have ask the parents of someone who is born and raised in your country if their son can play for your NT.

[identity profile] whiteswallows.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 07:42 am (UTC)(link)
Fun facts:

Mesut Özil, born 18 Oct 1988 in Gelsenkirchen, GERMANY
Sami Khedira, born 4 April 1988 in Stuttgart, GERMANY
Serdar Tasci, born 24 April 1987 in Esslingen am Neckar, GERMANY

So why do you think they've decided to play for us?

Maybe he should stick to his own business and improve his team, instead of bashing others without knowing the facts.

There are countries who recruit foreign players and give them citizenship specifically for the purpose of playing on their national teams. But that's far from what happens in countries like Germany, where players are either born there or immigrate at a young age.

So, Capello is full of shit.

There was a minor hubbub among USMNT fans a few days ago when an American player in the German 3rd league criticized Klinsmann for calling up too many European-based players who (according to him) couldn't speak English. It was just as stupid.

[identity profile] desienfree.livejournal.com 2011-12-31 08:56 am (UTC)(link)
