Roy Hodgson has revealed that Javier Mascherano was not in 'the right frame of mind' to play in Liverpool's 3-0 defeat at Manchester City.

The Reds midfielder was omitted from the squad for the clash at Eastlands after he was the subject of a bid from Barcelona.

"Javier isn't in the right frame of mind at the moment to play," Hodgson told his post match press conference.

"His head has obviously been turned by the offer from Barcelona but unfortunately, at the moment, the fee that the club thinks is the correct fee and the fee that is being offered is very far apart. Unless that can be resolved he might be unhappy for a long time to come.

"The discussions between Barcelona and the club are being held at high club level and as a result I don't want to say things that may or may not be true.

"I have got no wish to create headlines out of the Mascherano situation and it's not the first time that these things have happened.

"In fact, we have quite a lot of clubs at the moment suffering from players being courted by other clubs and players therefore being unhappy at being required to fulfil their contracts. It has happened to us now.

"This matter has developed over the last three days."

The Reds went down to a heavy defeat after goals from Gareth Barry and Carlos Tevez (2) gave Roberto Mancini's team their first league win of the season.

Hodgson conceded his side didn't perform to their level but felt the scoreline flattered the hosts.

"It doesn't matter whether the result is harsh or not - the result is the result," he said.

"I didn't think we were under the cosh to the extent that 3-0 may suggest.

"I think we were a bit unlucky with that wonderful double save from Hart which might have got us back in the game at 2-0, but we defended poorly for the goals.

"They took their chances well. I thought they played very solidly throughout and they were very strong physically and took charge of the game.

"We were always fighting to get back into it so you just have to accept that it wasn't our night tonight, but we were unable to produce the level of performance necessary to get a good result from this game."

He added: "We are talking about two teams at a similar level, we played away from home tonight and City played well.

"Last week we conceded a goal in the 90th minute after playing for 10 men for 45 minutes of the game.

"We don't think we did too badly in that (Arsenal) game but we didn't do well tonight because we didn't get the result we wanted."

Quizzed about the return of Fernando Torres and the striker's level of fitness, the boss added: "He came back to training three weeks later than everybody else so of course he is still in the middle of a preparation period."

Also just saw that Masch is close to a deal with Barca, in which case, good riddance. I'm sick of this dude, TBH, and Fernando Torres says it best:

I just want them to let him go already, I don't want players who doesn't want to stay in the club to stay in it. But also, I want us to get a good deal for him.

i am new to this so it seems like a good time to ask- when players are released from their contract because another club offers enough money for their current club to think it's worth it, what does that money do, really? does it all go to the club? and it's separate from the players salary, right?

for example last year cron was bought for some ridiculous sum of money, and i'm assuming all of that went to man u [is that where he played before idk idk] from real, and his salary is something different. so in order to temp him they would have to offer a pretty high salary in addition to a high idk transfer fee to get his current club to let him go?

wow so tl;dr

The transfer fee goes to the club that released the player. The player himself is subsidized by his new salary that he receives at his new club.

I'm so over this Masch thing. I'm so sick of players acting like pricks with us. No one is bigger than the club, if you want out then at least do it in a classy way jfc. Is that really so hard to ask esp for fans that have supported you all these years? Lots of players seem to lack that nowadays. Whatever though. He can sit and sulk until we get a reasonable fee.

Damn we have 2 games in 4 days.

Honestly, if you guys could afford to do it I think that Roy would have every right to stick him with the reserves for the rest of the season because there's no point having a disruptive influence in your first team because it's detrimental to the players who do want to be there.

But really if Barca offer decent money then you're better off getting rid

YES. I'm all for playing hardball, sort of like "if you won't play for us under contract then you won't play at all in the first team and oh by the way that means you can probably kiss your Argentina captaincy goodbye too".

I'm pretty fed up with him atm.

this is disappointing. masch had acted like a professional before hand, and i was expecting the same again, but boycotting the match yesterday was so out of line. it's ridiculous, and yeah, i'm upset at him

we could really really use him because he is an amazing defensive midfielder, but with his attitude i really don't want him all that much anymore. i don't want him messing anything else up for us.

arrrrgh. why act this way?

does barça really want a player who disrespects his current club and their supporters this way? he's just creating a reputation for himself that'll carry over to his new club anyway

Also another thing that pisses me off about this situation is that we basically up'd Masch's rep and value. I mean it's not like he was getting so many offers at West Ham. And this is how he repay's us? He must be talking to Michael Owen or something.

Redknapp: Maybe Macherano must have forgotten where he was when Liverpool came to sign him - in West Ham's reserves.

I read that on twitter, redknapp making sense for once.

I get it that he wants to go if his family in unhappy in England but please just play for your current team until the tranfer's finished. Boycotting doesn't help at all since it's really all about money. It's rude to let Liverpool players down like that.

this is hilarious to me, because i can't believe he actually thinks he'll play at barcelona

really

javi, you're not gonna get in that squad

and when he does get in that squad, he'll only get red carded because he's waaaay too rough

i really don't think masch is gonna fit in with the barca squad. really, he'll regret leaving liverpool, but i suppose i wish him all the best

ikr? Masch is far too defensive for Barca's style. They tend to have creative midfielders. Now Xabi would have worked for them. I don't see Masch going far.

I think this is diff though. RM fans didn't want Cron cuz of his rep [dumb excuse] and now all of a sudden they like him. Barca girls don't want Masch cuz they don't need him. Their mid if basically PERFECT, plus Masch doesn't fit into their style of play.
