i'm still not over how amazing our captain is. haters, deal with it.

GERRARD HAILED AS 'MODEL PRO' AFTER LIVERPOOL WIN

PRESTON, England (AFP) - Steven Gerrard was labelled a "model professional" by Liverpool assistant manager Sammy Lee after capping a troubled week off the pitch by inspiring the Reds to a 2-0 FA Cup win over Preston.

The Liverpool captain, charged by police with assault and affray over an alleged incident in nearby Southport following the Premier League leaders win against Newcastle last Sunday, led from the front as goals from Spanish duo Albert Riera and Fernando Torres sealed victory at Deepdale.

Gerrard's driving display and unselfish creation of Torres's injury-time goal here Saturday were the hallmarks of the kind of effort Reds' fans have come to expect from the Liverpool-born, 28-year-old, England midfielder.

"Steven is a top professional and he produced a terrific performance out there," said former Liverpool and England midfielder Lee. "He is a model professional and he certainly has our full support.

"This football club is not about individuals, but his pass at the end (to Torres) epitomised the team spirit we have in the team. He has been a great servant for this club and he is a terrific guy."

Liverpool were always in control against Preston, but a series of misses by Robbie Keane ensured a nervous finish to the game before Torres ended any hopes Preston may have had of forcing a replay against their fellow north-west club.

Lee insisted, however, that there are no concerns over former Tottenham striker Keane's failure to perform consistently in front of goal.

"We know what Robbie Keane can do, so there are no problems for us," Lee said. "If he keeps on getting in good positions, then we will keep on creating chances for him.

"Preston made it really difficult for us, though, rather than us making it difficult for ourselves. We knew they would be a very well-organised and determined side and that's how it proved."

Liverpool's third round win, the stage where teams from England's top two divisions enter the FA Cup, was marred by Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso limping off with a foot injury at half-time.

"Xabi has had seven stitches in his instep and he is very sore, but we won't know for 24-48 hours the full extent of the injury," Lee added.

Championship club Preston had the ball in the net midway through the second-half when Sean St Ledger headed in Richard Chaplow's cross, but referee Martin Atkinson disallowed the 'goal' after Jon Parkin fouled Jamie Carragher.

It was a needless challenge by the striker and second-tier Preston's manager Alan Irvine said: "I haven't spoken to Jon yet, but I will have a chat with him about it because it was an unnecessary foul.

"Maybe he was just trying to wrestle himself off the ground, but the linesman spotted it and I knew the goal would not stand as soon as it went in.

"Liverpool are a great side, however, and my players will have learned an awful lot from playing against them."

Thank you for making this post. I'm trying really hard not to flip a shit over Xabier's injury, so these proved to be lovely distractions.

"We know what Robbie Keane can do, so there are no problems for us," Lee said. "If he keeps on getting in good positions, then we will keep on creating chances for him.

Why can't be create his own chances? I feel like he needs everything to be placed in front of him before he can score (and sometimes not even that), whereas players like Torres and Riera work that ball away from the opposition and pave their own paths to the back of the net. Keane gets dispossessed so easily and then just tumbles to the ground and throws his hands up. Can't we expect more from him?

Maybe I need to go watch Newcastle again or something...

Can't we expect more from him?

That's what I keep asking myself. Exactly how much leeway are they going to give him?

Well, the bloke can't exactly say "You are correct, Keane is a load of shite and we threw all that money out for no reason." He'll have to wait until the end of the season for that, like they did with Joaquin.;)

i'm a fan of keane and i think he can do really well but he simply cant go on missing chances like that, he's in danger of getting in to the habit of it and it might be hard to overcome.

I think the poor guy is probably feeling the pressure of having half the fans calling for his head. Keane's one of the hardest working players in the Primer League, I really don't see a reason to start doubting him after half a season.

(Also have you noticed that he's been left on the bench after scoring in a game twice in a row now? Way to ruin a guy's confidence. =/)

I missed the first half of today's game, so if you're referring to a specific incident from today, I didn't see it.

If anything I'd say he needs to back off and relax a little. He's overanalyzing his shots at the moment and it's that bit of hesitance that's biting him in the bum.

And if nothing else there's always this (http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/dec/11/liverpool-premierleague) article (can't remember if ONTDF posted it or not) that shows how determined he is. Like you said, boy's got a great attitude if nothing else.

and since I feel like this is getting far too srs, here's a picture of Xabi I just found today.

No, I don't think he would've been able to walk off the field if he had a bone sticking out of him. But I have no idea what could've caused that. Stitches are worrying!

Hmmm, perhaps Cesc was not so forgiving of Xabi's "accident"?

In any case, I hope Xabi can make it to the England friendly. Our midfield is dropping like flies.

Okay, I just realized that in light of de la Red's situation, maybe "dropping like flies" is not the best expression but that was not an intentional pun. I rest my case.

Sorry I know this is a Liverpool thread, but the best part of the match today was the fact that Parkin's chant is "Feed the Beast and he will score."

and everton sing "feed the yak and he will score" he wont be doing any of that at anfield seeing as he's out for the season (not that he would anyway)

the first half of the game was great. the second half to me was a blur... all my thoughts was in xabi!! so i did had the time to enjoy nando comeback, stevie pass for his goal... so to me yesterday suck! :(

Poor keane, everyday i love him a little bit more but yesterday he didnt play well, at least in the first half... he miss some goals that was just impossible to miss(in theory). but i think is so bad for a player be compare to nando all the f. time, and at the same time, people come with the worse excuse for his head.
give the man time, he´s doing well. ok, not yesterday! but he working on his game in a new team. one of this days he will do amazingly, but first people have to stop compare him and nando!

Owww sorry.. im still to shock with the xabi thing! mostly cause in the morning i was talking to my friend about the xabi and cesc injured, and i was saying that would be a hell for me if anuthing like that happend to xabi, and then he got injured... it made everything a hell for me!
but i still hope that its nothing serious and that he can be back in a couple of weeks! so lets all pray for that!
:)

and i love the pics! XD

it was just before half time when he had the shot, i'm guessing he got caught by the defenders studs when he went to tackle him
