Dammit Carrie pull through.

pls Carrie you gotta make it through

in other news I finished my semester with a perfect GPA, I'm super excited, I was not expecting that to happen. (and now I'm thinking that I might actually be able to graduate with honours if I can do this for the next three semesters!)

but I'm fighting my annual holiday head cold. Every year, without fail. My immune system gives up once I take my last exam I guess.

Yesterday I finally went and saw The Arrival. I liked it a lot! There aren't that many films where a linguist saves the day, haha.

I'm ready for xmas but tbh I'm more ready for it to be over.

christmas

[identity profile] jazzypom.livejournal.com 2016-12-24 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
I'm spending it on the road, tbh. Doing a lot of beach walks (nothing fancy, just the odd beaches near me), because staying in front of the tv in a food coma is not on my list of things as a fun time. That being said... I need recommendations for a mascara that's not necessarily waterproof but water resistant for a beach walk (yo, I might be doing a beach walk, but I refuse to look less than awake; mascara makes me look awake).

Happy Christmas, everyone!

I bought L'Oréal's False Lash Sculpt at Boots a few months. It's not completely waterproof, but I think it might fit your requirements. It doesn't come off as easily as my Mac mascara but cleansing wipes will do it.

Cheers, cheers! Thank you! When I don't wear mascara people ask me if I'm ill (my lashes are long enough, but straight and thin, I do like mascara with a bit of a curl to open my eyes more). Cheers!

Can you recommend me an eyeliner while you're at it? Preferably long wearing, and black? No to benefit they're real (got this with boots points). I'm an old hand at liner (I can even use a brush with the pot of gel eyeliner) but I find it too fiddly to deal with.

I usually don't wear black eyeliner, because I have an oily face and it spreads easily and makes me look ghoulish, lol. And I prefer to use a kohl eye pencil because it lasts longer for me because again, a liquid liner spreads too easily.

So, I use just two colours at the moment: a cerulean from L'Oréal (I think called Colour Rich Le Khol), which I got from Boots. It's my go-to pencil, it's unfussy and less than £5. I usually do two full strokes on each eye to make it a bit thick, because sometimes the line can come off a bit thin. My other one is a forest green kohl from Body Shop with a nice thick lead, though I've found that it spreads easier than the L'Oréal one.

I'm planning to try other brands though. I really want to get this one (http://www.selfridges.com/GB/en/cat/estee-lauder-double-wear-stay-in-place-eye-pencil_327-81004877-DOUBLEWEAREYEPENCIL/?previewAttribute=electriccobalt) in teal but the £17 price tag is putting me off.

I hope Carrie Fisher recovers quickly :( I read that Gary has been taken to the hospital to be with her.

Happy Christmas, everyone! I've got cheesecake and the first season of Atlanta and Fleabag to binge over the weekend.

I've also been reading a lot over the last couple of weeks. Here's what I've read so far:

In Other Words by Jhumpa Lahiri
A Guide to Being Born by Ramona Ausubel
Something to Declare by Julian Barnes
Eligible by Curtis Sittenfeld
Darkness Visible by William Styron
The Wife by Meg Wolitzer
Wilful Disregard by Lena Anderssen

How have those books been?

I've been doing extra reading the last couple of weeks also. It's mostly been no-brain-required fiction, I needed a break from the heavy reading I've done this entire fall, haha. But I'm always looking for recs!

[identity profile] the4thjuliek.livejournal.com 2016-12-24 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Not bad! I surprisingly ended up liking all of them though The Wife was slightly disappointing towards the end. Wilful Disregard was great but a little bit heavy on the philosophy. And I love everything by Julian Barnes anyway. This was non-fiction and it's all about France and French culture, if you're into that sort of thing.

My personal recs are:

- In Other Words is wonderful and I think it might appeal to a language lover such as yourself.

- If you love Jane Austen, you'll love Eligble, since it's a reworking of Pride and Prejudice set in Cincinnati. It's falls under no-brain-required fiction, but very, very well written. I really couldn't put it down, tbh.

- Darkness Visible is of course, a bit of a downer (though I actually could relate to it), but my god, the prose is just beautiful. It's short so you can finish it quickly.

- A Guide to Being Born really surprised me. It's a collection of short stories and I didn't expect much when I started reading it, but most of the stories were wonderful. I actually teared up, reading a couple of them.
