England 2- 1 Wales

The lovely thing about England travelling fans (not the yobs), is the English flags that they carry which are specific to their local teams.

Let me get the fifth member of the gorillaz out of the way. Done. You won't see him again in this post if I can help it

For £49 million, Sterling really hasn't done his reputation much good at all. Townsend should have gotten the nod over him, I said that from time

Joe Hart was thinking about his commercial interests, because he's done better than this

England were down at half time, 0-1 to Wales, a country that has rugby as its national sport, FFS! So Sterling (yes!) and Kane (understandable) were hooked at half time. Hodgson threw all the strikers on. Vardy, Sturridge, Rashford... yasss. Kane is knackered, and there's the growing belief that his style suits Spurs but not so much England, due to how the England midfield is set up (for instance, Alli plays out wide, not behind him, and Rooney will spray his shots out to the wingers? In addition, England's wingers don't cross so tl;dr, Kane can't get service.

Sturridge is a similar player to Vardy in that he doesn't necessarily need the same service as Kane. Sturridge just needs a stray ball. I must say that his relationship with Klopp (shades antagonistic, shades of management) has made him a better, more focused player. Kudos to Sturridge!

To be honest with you, it felt like a PL game. I don't know if it's because of the weather, or 2/3s of the Welsh players actually born and raised in England but qualified for Wales via their grandparent (home nations rules are weird).

Scenes!

Kyle Walker was my MOTM. Well deserved

You wouldn't believe that the Chelsea and Spurs players were kicking the stuffing out of each other in May. Props to Rooney (!) and the senior players for building a good dressing room atmosphere. I do think it helps that the younger players (Stones, Smalling, Dier, Sterling, Alli, Kane, Barkley) have played together coming through the England U19s, U21s and so on.

Joe Hart needs to buy Vardy and Sturridge some drinks, or a nice gift the next time they are in Paris. Hart got SLAUGHTERED by other goal keepers for asking for a wall, because he gave Bale a target.

I'm trying to find Ramsey only, but Bale is everywhere. Y'all know that I don't like looking at Bale, and his comments make me side him even more, so...

Ramsey was immense for his country. I know that people bang on about Bale (understandable! He's also been credited with the rest of the Welsh squad raising their game, in that he turns up, trains hard and the rest) but Ramsey is quality and he doesn't shirk from his country

Alli made a good assist to Sturridge, nice footwork between himself, Vardy and Sturridge. Dier is good defensively, but offensively in terms of putting the shots forward, they weren't as accurate, and tended to go all over the place. What an experience they're having though! From teammates in their domestic team, to their first senior tournament. Football being the transient profession that it is, and if their form and stature improve in the game (and if Tottenham doesn't win any trophies any time soon) I'm sure one or both will leave the club (and PL) in the future, but I'm enjoying their camaraderie now

Studge! So, some tumblr peeps were having a go at people cheering on Vardy's goal yesterday. But it's not Vardy, tbh, but the England NT. I've stuck with my NT from bad (Terry vs Ferdinand, Sol Campbell) and the worse (World Cup 2014) when a LOT of English supporters were peeling off to support Germany! (well, I never!) because they loved the 'racial harmony' of the German squad (not the fact that they were on the up from 2010, I see you). Wankers will come and go in the English NT, but three lions on my crest for as long as I breathe. No to those Nike kits though.

Gary Neville is reporting to Sky afterwards. England can't celebrate juuuust yet. We can still get kicked out of the group if Wales win against Russia, and England lose against Slovakia. Points, goal difference. Football math.
Ukraine 0 - 2 Northern Ireland

Michael O'Neil changed out FIVE of the starting players (you hear that, WOY?), to start this game. He told his players that their game was flat, and that NI didn't rock up to Euro 2016 just to make up the numbers.

Eric Dier made a good point about set pieces, and how they were important. Northern Ireland's discipline in set pieces have impressed me.

Wow at the hail! They had to postpone the match for a bit because the stones were stinging!

Annnd just like that, Ukraine are out!
Germany 0- 0 Poland

Milik missed a great chance. I was surprised that it was a draw, tbh

I was waiting on a goal. Any goal

Damn Goetze, does he comfort eat all the time?

SMH. Roll on Italy and Scotland, eh?
Miscellaneous

Yesterday was Klopp's birthday! The club baked him a cake
Social Media

England's FA social media have been doing quite well in this competition.

Lallana in the distance. I think Lallana might have played himself out of contention going forward, tbh

Done. I have to get ready for the day.
OP: done! Cheers, jeers, corrections and the rest of it, you know the drill. That being said, we need to have a community talk about these tags. The comm has outgrown a few, tbh.

Date: 2016-06-17 09:01 am (UTC)I haven't been able to watch much of the Euro matches because I have been away from home for most. Can someone explain the situation of England and Wales in the group? If I'm not mistaken, if England lost this match, they wouldn't be able to qualify (except if they were one of the select 3rd-placed teams), but what are the chances of Wales going forward now after the loss? They have to win the next match?

Date: 2016-06-17 10:34 am (UTC)Germany-Poland was not that great. I think both teams simply cancelled each other out. There were a lot of battles and not a lot of creativity. Which was a bit of shame. But you see it more and more in tournaments.
I do hope Wales goes through too. And well done Northern Ireland. You proved that you deserved your chance with the big boys.

Date: 2016-06-17 11:17 am (UTC)With Matí (why does he always look like he's being forced to smile at gunpoint?), our new boy Gaitán and Don Augusto. I am 100% sure he's fucking with us.
We're also very close to signing Sime Vrsaljko, according to the player himself. It's nice to get business done early.
I still cannot believe Norn Iron won. They were as fantastic as Ukraine were poor. Michael O'Neill really has worked wonders. Few sore heads around the six counties this morning, I'll tell you that for nothing!

Aaron was a 1-man midfield yesterday. People keep saying that he's riding on one good season and that's not true because even when he's not scoring, he offers the necessary passes. Dier was class but I don't know Alli was doing. Aside from his accidental assist, he really wasn't good. Either he should step up against Slovakia or Roy should play Jack instead.
Jack Wilshire isn't match fit?
Date: 2016-06-17 12:39 pm (UTC)If we can get 60 mins out of him in one match, we'd have to rest him for another, that sort of thing.
Alli did all right especially in the second half of the game in terms of going forward, especially with him being played out of his normal position. If he normally performs at an 8 or 9, he was a six yesterday. He tracked back, tackled, and the assist and footwork is one of the reasons why you have a player like Alli on the field, because he'll give you that assist.
Conversely, Dier started out well in the first half, and was a wee bit under par in the second.
Trust me, I'd have had him on the field than say, Lallana, who's industrious, but kinda ineffective (still bitter about the money LFC paid for him, tbh. That's probably why I'm jaded re: Lallana).
