Jurgen Klinsmann is a bad coach, but the USMNT needs him
The United States men's national team's Gold Cup losses to Jamaica and Panama were pretty embarrassing, and they have a lot of people wondering if Jurgen Klinsmann should be removed as head coach. Another contingent of fans thinks Klinsmann should keep his job because of all the good he's done for American soccer. They're both right.
U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati spent five years courting Klinsmann and finally got his man in 2011 by giving Klinsmann full control of the program and the shiny job title he always coveted: head coach and technical director. In addition to Klinsmann's duties as senior team manager -- a full time job by itself -- the buck stops with him in all matters of youth development. He doesn't just have a say in the operation of the Under-20 and Under-17 national teams, he also created a new Under-23 national team and influences how the Development Academy system works. It's a huge task, and it's way too big for one person. Read more here

MLS All Stars host- Spurs! Cue deflation all around, and people are saying that the MLS now has All Stars from both coasts so that they can stop inviting foreign clubs. But other fans like it because it's the only time they get to see foreign clubs on home soil. It helps that Spurs has a growing fanbase in the states. Arsenal, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern are seen as sexy sides, but eh, you can't get top totty all the time

Date: 2015-07-28 02:39 pm (UTC)people in the US definitely stan PSG as of late because of Becks having played there & this thing:
here in Cali, I see lots of Madrid, Barcelona, Utd, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, PSG (not as much but still some) supporters, and then many Liga MX jerseys like Guadalajara, América (yuck) & Cruz Azul (booooo)

Date: 2015-07-28 03:02 pm (UTC)Liga MX teams, I assume, is because of the immigrants and the Spanish speaking population?

Date: 2015-07-28 03:36 pm (UTC)and yes! I'm in southern California so lots and lots of Latinos! I'm never surprised when I see lots of random jerseys from Peru, Colombia, Chile, Guatemala, Mexico, etc. which is why I hate when English announcers say "wow! there's sure a lot of insert Mexico/Central or South American country supporters hereI" because southern Cali is a really good place for Spanish speakers. you would not believe the amount of people who cry about not getting hired because they don't speak Spanish (and the "this is America, we speak English! I shouldn't need to know Spanish! they need to go back where they came from!" rhetoric is very common, yuck) because that is how much of a large immigrant population we have here. like in southern California, I can go to Anaheim and hear nothing but Arabic in a mile radius, but then I can go a bit over and hear nothing but Spanish!
but I also stan for Guadalajara because they're the closest thing to a "hometown" team I can get (as many Mexicans do bc many still view MLS as very "white"). my actual hometown team (La Piedad) actually were promoted to Liga MX back in 2013, I believe, but then the owners liquidated/killed the team before the season and I cried the entire season :(

Lampard is still injured
Date: 2015-07-28 10:14 am (UTC)RE: Lampard is still injured
Date: 2015-07-28 10:25 am (UTC)If you stopped paying attention to Frank Lampard not playing soccer in New York anymore — and we can understand if you’ve moved on to something more rewarding — here’s a quick recap: There have been two introductory press conferences, an abundance of jerseys sold plugging Etihad Airways, a handful of appearances in Yankee Stadium’s luxury suites, one in the broadcast booth, 22 games played in Europe and. … zero minutes in MLS. [...]
Two days prior to Lampard’s latest absence from NYCFC’s roster — an exciting 5-3 victory Sunday over Orlando FC — was the one-year anniversary of Lampard’s “official signing.” Never mind that, unbeknownst to the reader of the 2014 press release, Lampard was officially signed somewhere else.
[...]
In the interim, while Lampard’s debut was pushed back further (and further and further), a space probe was attached to a comet, losing and regaining its solar power as it sped closer to the sun. There was a breakout and containment of the Ebola virus. The world’s oldest man died at 116. David Letterman went off the air after 33 years. The U.S. lifted its 50-year trade embargo with Cuba. The Confederate flag was removed from the South Carolina state house. Gays across the country were granted the legal right to marry. Dan Snyder still refused to change the name of his football team. The NFL launched an investigation into Tom Brady’s balls. The Knicks lost 65 games. Sepp Blatter was re-elected, declared himself “the President of everybody,” and then resigned. Bill Cosby and Hulk Hogan were not, as we discovered, wholesome idols of the 1980s.

Date: 2015-07-28 02:17 pm (UTC)From a personal experience, I have two younger siblings that I pay $90-95 USD every season to register; there is a fall season & summer season, so for just them two to get a roster spot I pay $360 USD for a full year every year. That doesn't include the fact that I have to pay for their uniforms, boots, and traveling expenses separately. Maybe it doesn't seem like a lot of money to most, but I'm a full-time student with a part-time job and I pay for most of their footie expenses because my parents don't have that disposable income. They love to watch footie and play it all the same, so it's hard for me to imagine telling them that I nor my parents can afford their favorite hobby in the world. The US soccer program is a MESS that doesn't favor immigrant children or those who come from less fortunate families or those who can't foot the expenses. Especially when the IMG Academy that produces many top US players Eddie Johnson or DaMarcus Beasley costs $13000 USD for a weekly camp, $60,000 USD for private tuition, and a one week camp costs nearly $2,000. So it stings me a bit when my brother and sister watch soccer and want to play but how? I just want more representation for kids like my siblings, which is something we'll never see with the people in charge of the US Soccer program & the few spots of their scholarship program just aren't enough for disadvantaged kids.
Back to my point, though... I always tell people that when it comes to coaching/managing a professional sports team, you really need two individuals to instruct & lead the team. Especially the USMNT, who really do need something of a functional model to having one coach that is completely dedicated to a "considerate" style - inspiration, motivation, influence, intellectual stimulation, consideration, etc. - and another that is very much so "structural" - rewards for productivity, performance monitoring, task motivation, product-oriented, error intervention, etc. Klinnsman hasn't figured out how to monitor the guys previous performances and hasn't found a way to incorporate the German players with the MLS guys & the new faces of the USMNT that are barely getting their feet wet.
As much as I love my USMNT, they aren't going to get very far with their physical style of play; not when their aggressiveness is going to be counterproductive, allow for error & other more technically talented squads to swoop in on those errors. So Klins really needs to open his eyes & start watching these college kids. Like, these are the kids who are playing at their prime age of 18-22/3 and should be getting international experience much sooner. Klins should also be looking at Latino children, 'cause not all of them are going to get called up to Mexico or Colombia and many of them might feel like playing for the US is a potentially better option than carrying the weight of their parents' national team. I love my home country, but I know playing for the US would be a more door opening experience than Mexico would be - especially as a women player. Yeah, the USWNT is difficult to get called up to but... it's better than how shitty the Mexican women are treated.
wait, wait... you have to pay to play?!

Yeah, that makes sense. Especially with the immigrant children and the 'street ball' they'll have the traits that makes Dempsey good. It's obscene that you have to pay to play. Don't the teams have academies for young people to get involved in? Or is it you coming through college, hence the draft? The more you write about this, the more of a gordian knot it seems to be.

Date: 2015-07-28 02:51 pm (UTC)But regardless, yeah, it isn't cheap here in the US and maybe it's different in other states that aren't as expensive as Cali?? But I feel like it shouldn't be as pricey to play football. Like, sending my brother and sister to soccer camps for a week shouldn't cost me $4000. Jfc.
Dempsey is definitely one of our "unique" stars because he came from a really rough neighborhood and, even though a lot of people hate him/his attitude, I understand where he's coming from. I grew up in a Latino/black dominant area so your perspective gets colored a bit differently than everyone else - and Dempsey grew up pretty similar. He's one of the few who really used his neighborhood community to shift the way he plays (he grew up watching Mexican/South American football & playing with former Mexican MX players). So he got by on his sheer talent & determination to make something of himself - he's really the one standout case to be made for something of the "American dream, pulling yourself up by your bootstraps" narrative people love to spout.
And sadly, before the only way players used to be able to become involved in the MLS structure was getting picked up in the draft. Now that the MLS is taking a cue from their other counterparts, they're creating "Homegrown" players that are making names for themselves in the youth system (Yedlin & Zardes are the two most prominent ones). So now players can play for the reserve team of the MLS club and potentially get signed - before recent times, nah, this was never possible.
Like I said, our system in the US is very screwed and I'm not white nor from a family with financial privilege so, despite my love for the US/the US teams... I have a very healthy dose of criticism over it. We don't operate like the rest of the world in letting our players go through the youth academies; and if we do, you gotta have $$$ to even make an impact. If you know how the gymnastics world works, the US with youth sports is kinda the same :/
RE: wait, wait... you have to pay to play?!
Date: 2015-07-28 03:26 pm (UTC)Here's Galaxy:
(This is for individuals who are talented enough to make the reserve squad for Galaxy - who don't pay these reserve players for anything regarding the team)
Here's Houston Dynamo's summer camps that are required to be attended prior to being able to join their youth academy
This is one of DC United's examples of youth camps
Colorado Rapids:
And Portland
Like I said, these were just a few of the prices I got when thinking of academies for MLS being inviting to youth players that come from better off families. I don't come from a crappy background, my parents make decent money now after working from when I was a wee thing (my father is a warehouse operator, mother is a nurse) but they could never afford stuff like this. So it makes me think, how in the heck are kids who come from even more disadvantaged backgrounds going to make it here in the US?
Lol, don't even get me started on American football or basketball. Basketball & the kids who really try to "make" it is one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed.

Date: 2015-07-28 03:46 pm (UTC)Kids can receive college scholarships but only a small fraction receive "full rides." Most of them are only partial scholarships - meaning the school gives half and you have to find the other half through taking out loans or getting financial assistance from the US government. And getting financial aid in the US is fucking awful. So a kid has to really shine to get a college scholarship, but being able to shine is only possible if that kid has had experience with summer & elite camps, private training, and playing in many different youth programs. Which, of course, requires $$$. The US likes to pretend it cares about diversity but lbr, it only cares about lining their pockets. Good ol' capitalism at work - even in youth sports.

Date: 2015-07-29 01:54 am (UTC)At one of the Union matches last month, they had about 10 kids from the first Academy graduating class come out on the field before the game. They were all going to college and not the MSL, so, yeah, long term investment before the Union see anything if at all because given the college costs in the US, I would find it hard to turn down a free education for an unknown if I still got to play at a division I school.
