In 'your favs disappointing you' news...

Marco Reus fined 540,000 euros for driving without a license for 3 years

source : bild article sadly behind paywall but posted in a tumblr post

e: apparently he also received five speeding tickets during that time, but no-one ever noticed he didn't have a license o_O

e2: someone from reddit translated a quote from the man himself:

He took driving lessons when he was 18 but never took a driving test. He just decided to drive without a licence. "Sadly I decided to take this route. I can't even comprehend the reasons myself. Now I know: I was too naive and it was stupid. I have learnt my lesson. It will never happen again."

e3: can't believe it took me so long to remember his nickname is Rolls Reus.

yeah. i am disappoint :/

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. That's more than some people with a licence can say.
But that's about the only positive thing in this story

Yeah, I'm not too fussed about him driving sans licence as most kids do that, although people usually do it before they are of age and can't get their licence.
I just can't phantom why he didn't just get his licence when he turned 18.

It's definitely not what most people do here in Germany (unless you count someone doing a few rounds on an empty parking lot with a parent for additional practise, which is socially accepted mostly, but still illegal). Going into normal traffic and being caught/having an accident, as teenagers end up in the media doing, will get everyone involved into a lot of trouble, particularly the person providing the car, who will get their own punishment. And the person driving will likely be blocked from doing their license for some time. Doing this sort of thing for years as if one had a license... not acceptable in the least. Traffic in Germany is very full and quick, so the last thing we need are untrained people. Insurance won't pay for any damage caused, and so on.

Haha my parents didn't even let me do that, although my uncle let me drive a tiny bit at the parking lot once.

I'm not saying the society is okay with it, but my understanding is that among young people (particular men) it's quite normal to take your parent's car for a spin (usually without their knowledge).

I have a friend who's younger brother copied and stole his dad's car, to the point where the dad removed all the wheels so that boy wouldn't be able to take it. This is of course one of the more extreme cases.

I'm not an advocate for it, the rules are there for a reason but I'm not surprised when I hear stories about it either.
