Originally hailing from Watford and a Hornets fan by trade, a new father from Manchester has accepted that he will probably be powerless to prevent his baby from growing up supporting one of the city's big two teams and, as such, is now auctioning off his seven-month-old son's club allegiance in the name of charity.

Ian Charters, 30, has posted the rather unusual listing on eBay, which will see the winning bidder allowed to choose which Manchester club, United or City, little Eddie will grow up to follow.

Any money raised will be donated to Bliss, a charity that provides support for premature and ill babies -- a cause close to Ian and his wife Jo's heart.

Eddie was born six weeks early and subsequently struggled with jaundice, weight issues and problems with his digestive system while spending the first few weeks of his young life in Stockport's Stepping Hill Hospital. Writing in the listing details, dad Ian has vowed to buy Eddie a football top and matching curtains in the winning team's colours, take him to as many matches as possible and generally "do the best he can" to make sure the little boy "doesn't end up supporting the other team."

"I live in Greater Manchester, but originally come from down south so I have no affiliation with either of the Manchester clubs," Ian told the Manchester Evening News. "I'll be fighting a losing battle trying to get my son to support my team. Frankly, I wouldn't want to inflict that on the poor child anyway."

Now there's a sentiment most football-obsessed parents can sympathise with.

awwwww lol. this is qt and a little sad, but for a good cause. Also, it seems like the father is going to be taking on the $£€ of taking his kid to premier league games @__@

My favourite tag that I got to use on this poast was "buying shit".

Well, good luck with that. Fathers have tried that before.

(the relevant bit starts about at 1:40)

Apart from all that, I hope his baby does well and he collects lots of money for the charity.

At least he and his father can mourn together - they're only separated by two points, heh.

This seems so odd, but hey, it's for good cause! I hope his baby is doing well now.

ONTD, were you influenced by your parents to support a team?
My brother and I definitely were! :P

For football, no, since neither one of my parents are into it.

But American football, yes, in a way. At least on the college football level. My brother fell down the rabbit hole way more than me, though, and has passed it onto my nephew (who is a bit scary about it, haha).

I think my love for Germany is partly thanks to my father but he was more into the guys from the 70s and 80s like Beckenbauer, Rummenigge and Schumacher.

But apart from that, no. My father supports the Spurs and Bayern and I'm into the Gunners and BvB (though I actually like Bayern).

Not at all. I'm the first in my family to get into football. Lol. But when I grow up to have a family of my own, I will probably breed a litter of mini-Madridistas. They can get into other clubs as well but Madrid is a requirement! :p

lol no, i'm the only one in my family who likes football outside of the world cup and euros - my parents don't watch football at all but, if asked, my bro and sis will say they support arsenal and germany.

i think i was more influenced by where i lived when i was younger, cos i used to live in islington near highbury so on matchdays the place would just be full of arsenal supporters :P

yup, that's how i got stuck with chelsea haha

basketball was the sport i really grew up watching with my family though so i'd say i'm more influenced by that when it comes to teams.

Yes and no.

My local club is my dad's club, so it's not exactly local, but from the next city over, where he's from. My mom supports a different club and didn't manage to win me over.

Neither of them have a horse in La Liga and in the Premier League my dad is a Manc and I'm for Liverpool, so yeah xD Though my brothers did influence my allegiance in La Liga.

Lol, odd that. But at least it's for charity.

Watch the kid completely swerve and cheer for Liverpool.

isn't this technically brainwashing? just let the baby choose whichever club he likes!

i know this is for charity, but there are other ways.
