The former defender believes the Bayern midfielder is the clear candidate to take up the armband for the national team over team-mate Manuel Neuer or Dortmund's Mats Hummels.

Bastian Schweinsteiger is "the logical successor" to Philipp Lahm as Germany captain, according to iconic former defender Franz Beckenbauer.

Lahm opted to retire from international football after leading his side to World Cup glory in Brazil this summer, having first taken up the armband for the finals in 2010.

Schweinsteiger was vice-captain to his Bayern Munich team-mate in Brazil and Beckenbauer believes the 30-year-old is the obvious choice to take up the armband.

"Schweinsteiger for me is the logical successor to Philipp Lahm," he told Bild. "He's a leader, he won a lot of sympathy for his incredible versatility in the World Cup final.

"The whole team is raised by such a fighter. And, as deputy to Lahm, he knows the captain's role already."

Beckenbauer feels Mats Hummels would be the ideal deputy to Schweinsteiger, while he claims Manuel Neuer would not be the correct choice given his position on the pitch.

"[Hummels] should be vice-captain to Schweinsteiger. Neuer is a great personality, but a coach prefers an outfield player as they can better influence the action," he added.

He's been in Ibiza for the past few days, looking very hot.

How could he possibly be denied?

I've just seen that the all star game is on at around 2am! I'm going to have to give that a miss, probably download it the next day.

What were the previous objections to Basti being captain? I've read that he was considered "too emotional" and stuff about not being the right type.

I remembered reading somewhere that he missed almst 70 games with madrid due to some sort of injury already ... than I saw thos chart :

http://www.transfermarkt.com/sami-khedira/verletzungen/spieler/29401

He does seem injured a lot tbh ... not seriously accept the last one but ... still quite a lot for such a young guy tbh

I'm not hating on him or anything. I value him a lot as a player but if injuries are a factor against Basti, it should also be taken into account when one looks at Sami.

There is Bastis injury record:

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/bastian-schweinsteiger/verletzungen/spieler/2514

Since 07/08 season Basti missed 55 games for Bayern due to injuries, Sami - 87 (39 being latest injury). If we take the last serious one out it would be 48 for Sami. But than why count fractured toe or broken colarbone for Basti?

I am not trying to prove who is more injury prone but it simply seems to me that they both had quite a bit of those... Generally German DMs seem to be made of glass ... Basti, Sami, Bender bros, ...

Schweini has a reputation for begging off though - which may not be fair. Sami comes to Germany whenever he's called up.

Basti was with NT forever so everytime he is not able to take part is a small sensation (and celebration time for Bild tbh ... GOD! I HATE BILD AND THEIR ANTI-SCHWEINSTIGER CAMPAIGNE!) ... since 2006 Basti is expected to be there, Sami is still (which is unfair) still regarded as a new kid that has to establish himself ... and Samis in juries don't help him tbh ... we know each other well enough, so you know that I am Barca first, BvB second kind of fan but ... I never wished ill to any RM/BAYERN player in NT ... still, I feel like, if we talk about NT captain and we take injuries into account ... Basti>Sami ... Basti prooves continuety and can pass the armband to Mats/Sami (provided he is not injured again) in 2016 ... both of them would be mature enough to be able to lead a team to defending WC ... andf tbh ... I think THAT is what matters to those guys the most ... leagues, cups, Champions Leagues ... even the Euros .. those are nice but ... when I imagine baby 6 yo Schweini playing footty with his mates ... he was not winning CL or Euros in his dream but WC with Germany ... just like I was wining cross-country gold medals in Olympics when I was a kid ... I never become a profesional because ... I am simply crap ...but still remember the dream ... winning the ultimate thing, being the worlds greatest... and for the profis it is even more evident WC>EC>CL>anything else on club level.

Or if the baby is secretly projecting Daddy's bromantic yearnings.

(This post is your fault! You're FORCING ME to post pics of my favourite babies :PP)

Steven Gerrard's daughter LOVES the RM kid, apparently. Daddy posted this picture. (And God - talk about cute. What a sweetie!)

And of course we all think of:

It's like they are trying to send signs of love ;) Of course she loves Uncle Xabi best.

But NO KID ON EARTH is cuter than Delfina Suarez (there's no logic to this post, apparently - I'm just gonna throw in random cuties)

OMG. Cheeks and dimples!

You support Barca, right? Anyway - congrats on signing the cutest kid ever in the whole wide world. She's like my spirit animal. I want to cuddle her all day long. And what a star - blowing kisses at the adoring Anfield public. Gorgeous!

And then Mesut with the babies after the World Cup. I made a whole post:
