… for the preliminary World Cup squad … with some surprises!

Goal: Manuel Neuer (Bayern München), Roman Weidenfelder (Borussia Dortmund), Ron-Robert Zieler (Hannover 96)

Defense: Jerome Boateng, Philipp Lahm (Bayern München), Erik Durm, Kevin Großkreutz, Mats Hummels, Marcel Schmelzer (Borussia Dortmund), Benedict Höwedes (Schalke 04), Marcell Jansen (HSV), Per Mertesacker (FC Arsenal), Shkodran Mustafi (Sampdoria Genua)

Midfield: Mario Goetze, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Müller, Toni Kroos (Bayern München, Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund), Lars Bender (Bayern Leverkusen), Leon Goretzka, Julian Draxler, Max Meyer (Schalke 04), Matthias Ginter (FC Freiburg), André Hahn (FC Augsburg), Sami Khedira (Real Madrid), Lukas Podolski, Mesut Özil (FC Arsenal), Andre Schürrle (FC Chelsea)

Offense: Miroslav Klose (Lazio Rom), Kevin Volland (1899 Hoffenheim).

That is … unexpected. Not that he doesn't take Gomez. I kind of expected that. But … Goretzka? Meyer? Ginter? Mustafi? And only Klose and Volland????

No Ter Stegen! Oh my.

I'd put Poldi in with the strikers.

But yes, the exclusion of Max Kruse is a surprise.

Those kids will presumably be cut in a few weeks.

I hope he sticks to the basics this year. He never could decide which club he wanted us playing like...

He'll experiment for the first three or four games so the team is well prepared and cohesive when they get to Portugal, obviously.

the more i think about it the more negative i am of germany's chances

I don't want him to experiment the way he did last time.

(At least Bayern's players will arrive on time this time - leaving them to dwell on the loss was probably a bad idea. They should have been with Germany 24 hours later and with their friends helping them forget the loss by focusing on the next task).

I want what he thinks his first 11 is (or some version VERY close to it) to play in the friendlies with instructions that if they feel unwell at any time, they are to ask to come off.

Too much experimentation killed us in 2012. I'll never forget that Italy line-up.

Pee has to be in the CB. He has had an amazing year at Arsenal.

Not impressed with Hummels or Svhmelzer. Mostly because he has not played much with the NT and you cant experiment much with the back line

The one thing with Hummels is that he's actually a decent-ish fit with Per. Per's rather slow but he's technical and has finesse. Mats is fast and powerful.

The problem is I don't know how much Hummels is willing to play with Lahm and Boaeng and Neuer, who are all pretty much guaranteed starters. I don't know if it's just a Bayern issue (which we know Hummels does have) or if it's that he's not used to playing with them but I am all for a cohesive together-back line.

I just... man I wish badstuber had matured the way he was heading. He was growing into CB fantastically.

I know he will and I'm glad because that had to be incredibly brutal to b have your career almost permanently end

But just think how good he could have been had he been able to progress instead of coming back from that injury ;.; I don't think Stu Holden's recovered yet either come to think of it

Are we sure? Per has been the best CB in the Prem this year. And he's a better fit with Boateng than with Hummels.

Per being in the Prem inures him from criticism from jealous Bundesliga clubs/hacks/former players.

Arsenal has no lobby (on the contrary, Wenger would be cheerful if none of his players were picked :p) and alternatively, no enemies in German football.

Close to my idea. But I wouldn't mind Sami if he is fit. We could use some cover for our defense.

If Jogi is willing to call him up even if he's that iffy... we desperately need him

(glad he called up Howedes though. Apparently Benni said he called to check in several times to see how he was feeling. I AM RELIEVED.)

Wtfffff was he doing putting Kroos in Mullers position who told him that was a good idea!

scuze me jogi there seems to be some mistake i do not see rene adler on that list
or max kruse

Although not even gonna lie about how happy I am to see Howedes and Draxler. TBH I wasn't expecting Gomez to make it given his injury and struggle to get past it. Wondr why he didn't tap Sidney Sam...

eta: Ahahahah no seriously I just realized there's no Westermann

Westermann is the 'when all else fails' player so Jogi must be feeling really confident to nominate some cute young things over him

also no holtby who admittedly hasn't had the best season but still exists and is a midfielder

it's like

messing with my head

Even then we're talking goalies, who have the longest shelf life of any player outside of like, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

You don't need to rush to train new 20-something keepers. Then you take out the experience which I'm even more uncomfortable with. Heck, Lehmann came out of retirement for Arsenal and he was just fine n' dandy.

We'll only take 2 keepers, I think.

From: [identity profile] marsyke.livejournal.com
Not possible. You have to take 3 goalkeepers according to the FIFA rules.

I don't get it with Holtby, either. I miss him at Schalke! :(

I am sure deep inside heisses Schalke too given they will pro have a CL spot and he was loaned to a team facing relegation

But I know he really wanted to play in EPL like his dad so I cant fault him for that

Negl I will be nlown over if Arsenal keeps going after Draxler sounds like they are trying again

He's had the year from hell. Hardly played at all - not even at Fulham.

normally I'm a huge Adler-fan. But this season...
Just no! Hamburg is sooo bad this season and René also didn't look well most of the time.

And yeah, I'm also missing Kruse in the squad :(

Yay for Goretzka and Volland! They're promising, although I doubt they will end up going to Brasil.

The squad doesn't look too bad on paper. The question is what it will look like on the field.
I think we can also say that Germany has a striker problem.

Even Pep can't make it work against big opposition without Messi.

I'm most concerned by this decadent bullshit of putting Lahm in midfield.

A not very sympathetic article on Mario Gomez's dismal year and WC woes (http://www.whoateallthepies.tv/international_football/189678/injury-stricken-mario-gomez-accurately-captures-the-acute-heartbreak-of-missing-out-on-a-world-cup-in-open-facebook-letter.html)

And now, horrifyingly, Schweini and Reus have gone off injured (May 10). They'd better be okay in time.

What about giving Fahrmann a chance, Jogi? He's had a wonderful year at Schalke.
