Mourinho accused of using a homophobic slur before CSKA Moscow vs Real Madrid

title or description

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has been accused of making a homophobic slur prior to Tuesday's Champions League game away to CSKA Moscow.

Mourinho is alleged to have called match officials "faggots" prior to the 1-1 draw in Moscow.

The European Gay and Lesbian Sports Federation (EGLSF) has filed a complaint against the Special One, while co-president Louise Englefield has urged UEFA to take action against the former Chelsea and Inter Milan boss.

"Homophobia is unacceptable from anyone in football, much less from one of the game's most senior figures," Englefield was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying.

"We are deeply disappointed that Mr. Mourinho is casually using homophobic terms of abuse in his workplace.

"It is especially sad that these comments have been made during the International Football v Homophobia campaign week.

"As long-standing partners of the FARE network, we call on UEFA to take action and impose appropriate sanctions."

at last there is a reason for my hatred of him that isn't "but i hate all the teams he coaches/he's an asshole, really"

I don't speak Spanish, so obviously a lot of nuance is lost on me. But isn't equating "piece of shit" with "f*ggot" really fucking problematic? There are a ton of dumb ass kids in America who say, "that's gay" or call their friends "f*g" or "homo" and don't mean anything homophobic by it per se. The problem is, that in all those cases, those words can be replaced by "stupid" or "idiot" or "asshole" or some other inherently derogatory word. So being "gay" becomes equated with being stupid or unpleasant or undesirable.

And again, I don't speak Spanish, so I may be way off. But it seems, in your explanations, that's how "maricons" gets used. And that, to me, is a problem. The same way it is in America when someone calls someone a "homo" when they really mean they're being dumb or pathetic or what have you.

This has nothing to do with being talking properly or not using curse words, and everything to do with not equating gay people with pieces of shit. Because that's offensive and hurtful and dehumanizing. If Mou had said, "these piece of shit referees" or "these asshole refs", the comments in this post would pretty much all be along the lines of, "Oh Mou," and maybe some people calling him out on his abrasive personality. But he didn't do that. He used a term that has a connotation of being about sexuality. He may not be homophobic. I don't really care. I care that he used a term that seems like, to me, perpetuates the association of being gay with being an idiot/moron/asshole/piece of shit/insert derogatory term here.

as I state above, you see tons of guys in Spain saying "hola maricón" or "hola cabrón" meaning "hey dude" or "what's up man"

it is seen as a bad word but no one really bates an eyelid at that these days, so the whole "derogatory" thing is lost.

And you clearly completely misunderstood my point. So have fun defending homophobic language.

Finally someone who understands why saying that f*ggot and asshole are interchangeable is an issue in and of itself.
I'm not calling Mou homophobic because I don't know him. But I am agreeing that he casually used a homophobic slur casually. And as a native Spanish speaker I do get that it's used casually. But don't you see how that just means our cultures are steeped in misogynist language?

Spanish is a sexist misogynist language by nature (plural of pretty much everything in male? check) but my point was that the word doesn't have the same connotations in Spanish as it does in English thus Mou wasn't using it in an homophobic way, people are making a big deal of something that happens a lot (not saying it is right per se although no one really gets offended at it in Spain these days), giving a bit of a cultural context behind it before people got all incensed at the guy and started calling UEFA to intervene on this.

With this I think I'm done before people think I'm an homophobe myself just because I give a different view on what a word is meant in the cultural context of my country.
