it's not easy being green

Although they were leaked months ago, the new green away kit for the German national team has officially been announced!

The back of the shirt (around the neck?) will read "1972 - der Beginn einer Erfolgsgeschichte, 2012 - ein neues Kapitel wartet darauf, geschrieben zu werden", which someone on Tumblr translated roughly as "1972 - the beginning of a success story, 2012 - a new chapter is waiting to be written".

The shirts will be officially unveiled at Germany's friendly against France on February 29th in Bremen, although it will be available on the DFB website and through Adidas as early as February 24.

In related news, here we have Schweini and Thomas Muller playing a weird retro Mannschaft version of Memory.

ETA one more via Facebook:

When the kits first got leaked I was like "Eh...." but they've grown on me over time and now I love their retro throwback-ness (there is not enough of this in this sport, IMO) and I've been checking the various kit sites obsessively to see if these are in stock yet. People, I have worn my black Schweini 2010 away kit so much that this is what has happened to the letters:

You can see the hole in the #7 and if you click the photo to get to the bigger picture, you can see how the gold lettering is peeling off in places, e.g. around the bottom of the E, etc. (It's also not really as dusty and dirty as it looks!) I need a new shirt! Ugh, but I love the black one so much, it is my favourite of all the shirts I own.

Good god. These aren't next year's horrors are they?

Apparently they are. But um, it might look better on the players.

They always look better on the players - that's a given. Stuffing a player inside a jersey, rolling it along the floor in teh mud and dirt and getting it covered in sweat ALWAYS improves it.

But sometimes - you wonder. Why bother making something ugly just to prove that point?
