Neil Lennon and Ally McCoist join forces to blast the Sun for attempting to start shit

NEIL LENNON and Ally McCoist joined forces last night to slam a newspaper story that criticised Celtic coach Alan Thompson for having a drink with Rangers’ keeper Allan McGregor.

Celtic manager Lennon was incensed by any suggestion of wrong doing after the pair were spotted in a West End pub in Glasgow – while McCoist insisted it was a good thing that Old Firm rivals can enjoy a pint together.

Lennon said: “It’s a nothing story,” after the Scottish Sun, left, reported he would be hauling Thommo in for showdown talks.

“One of my staff and Allan McGregor frequent the same pub. Wow.

“The Old Firm are always being told to do more to lessen the tension between us and then someone tries to stir up some sort of controversy that isn’t there.

“I think it’s disgusting. That kind of story only stirs up trouble and I can’t get my head round it.

“It’s a very difficult thing to do in Glasgow sometimes but there’s total respect between Alan and Allan. We’re trying to take away the sectarian element and I’ve been in that pub myself when Allan’s been in and I have enjoyed his company for 15 or 20 minutes.

“It’s very difficult for Celtic and Rangers players to socialise with each other in the city.

“But it happens every now and then, and then a tabloid makes a whole big thing about it. But there’s nothing wrong with it.”

Rangers boss McCoist agreed with Lennon and said: “I don’t have a problem with it. In fact, on the contrary I think it’s quite good.

“I know Tommo well and I’ve had a beer with him before myself.

“Plus our goalie, surprisingly, did it right because he had a day off the next day!

“So I don’t have a problem with it. But, listen, there has always been relationships within the Old Firm.

“Socially it’s good to meet up and have a beer. Why, wouldn’t you?”

Respect for both of them for coming out and saying this.

I'm an Aberdeen fan (so we have massive rivalry with the Huns - though we suck so much that we just sort of resent them at this point) but when Celtic played Peterhead recently Neil Lennon went to the local pub and was a perfect gent.
