The Government today announced it would appeal against an order to release the hidden ‘Hillsborough Thatcher’ files to the public. Earlier this month, the Information Commissioner said confidential reports detailing the discussions then-PM Margaret Thatcher had in the aftermath of the 1989 stadium disaster should be made public.

The publication of the papers, said to include reports presented to the prime minister and correspondence with Home Secretary Douglas Hurd, would have come before the findings of the Hillsborough Independent Panel, which is currently deciding what information should be released to the public.

At the time of the Information Commissioner’s decision, the Cabinet Office said it would be wrong to put anything out before the panel had given it the green light and the families of those who lost their lives had seen it. And today, it announced it will appeal the decision. A Cabinet Office spokesman said: “We are appealing the Information Commissioner Office’s decision."

A petition has been set up asking for a full disclosure of all government documents relating to the disaster. If you're a UK citizen please sign it.

Haha good idea. Mightn't that make things a bit complicated if loads of people sign up using that postcode when they clearly don't live there? I can the government using people bending the rules as an excuse to ignore the petition, they clearly don't want to release the files :/

I used the postcode for the hall that I lived in during my semester at Manchester. I figured enough people live there at any point in time that it shouldn't cause a problem. It's M14 6HP if anyone else wants to try it.

Signed it. Releasing the documents is the least the goverment can do for the people affected by Hillsborough. You definately feel they have something to hide if they are contesting the decision and that is unacceptable.
