I was looking for some news concerning Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine because I wanted to see what's going on there and I must say, I'm kinda worried now. The situation seems quite difficult to handle for the government, just have a look at what the papers say :

Daily Mail:

The Polish prime minister says his country may not be able to co-host the 2012 European Championship unless authorities and football clubs ensure the safety of supporters in stadiums.
Donald Tusk met football authorities and club owners on Wednesday to pressure them into using strong measures to exclude hooligans from stadiums.
Following the meeting, Tusk says stadium security needs to be a priority following the unrest last week in the Polish Cup.
Tusk convened the meeting following Legia Warsaw's win over Lech Poznan that caused at least £8,000 (40,000 zlotys) in damage to the Bydgoszcz stadium. Police have arrested 26 hooligans so far over the incident.
Poland is co-hosting Euro 2012 with Ukraine.

this is so serious hooliganism, srsly i even read the security had to use water canon against the crowd o_o

Bangkok Post:

Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned hooliganism posed a threat to Euro 2012 after crisis talks with the nation's clubs.
"If we can't settle this within months, the European Championships will be endangered"
said Tusk, himself an ardent fan and Sunday league player.
After meeting with the 16 clubs in Poland's top-flight Ekstraklasa, Tusk said he had raised the spectre of widening empty-stadium penalties imposed on Lech Poznan and Legia Warsaw, whose fans marred last week's cup final.
He pledged to take "resolute action" to stem the problem.
"We understand how annoying a state reaction can be for some people, but we're not going to give up on this one. Nobody has relieved us of the responsibility to provide people with a sense of security," he added.
Even before the latest outburst of fan violence upped the ante for Tusk, his centre-right government had vowed to get tough ahead of the showcase tournament, which Poland will host with neighbouring Ukraine.

Also I went on polandeuro2012.net and found this :

A new report from a Warsaw based anti-racism group documents the number of racist and discriminatory incidents in the host countries for the 2012 European Championships.

The report called ‘Hateful’ has been produced by the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association in cooperation with Football Against Prejudices (Ukraine), as part of the FARE network Eastern European Monitoring Centre. It covers an 18 month period from September 2009 to March 2011, detailing 195 individual incidents involving football in Poland and Ukraine.
The authors describe the numbers of incidents reported as ‘giving cause for concern’ and highlight denial of the problem as a key issue in the region.

‘It is amazing to note that even in the face of such overwhelming evidence, activists are still too often encountering a refusal to accept even the most obvious problems,’ says the report.
‘NEVER AGAIN’ spokesman Rafal Pankowski who is head of the FARE project in Eastern Europe, commented,
‘These figures are only the very tip of the iceberg but they demonstrate the scale of the problems of racism and intolerance we face in Eastern Europe. We found that hatred of Jews remains a point of principle for many fan groups in Poland, even though the Jewish is a tiny minority of the population.
‘In Ukraine we urge extreme vigilance by the authorities towards the presence of far-right groups, who we believe will be active and visible during the Euros next year.
‘However putting the sense of gloom aside, we also have evidence that our work to challenge and educate over a long period of time is coming to fruition.
There have been positive signs that governmental and some regional authorities have begun to understand what needs to be done and are involved in a process of training and awareness raising.
‘We are pleased to be working with the local organising committees in both countries through the UEFA social responsibility programme for 2012.’
Of the 195 incidents reported, 133 took place in Poland and 62 in Ukraine, with the majority (105) concerning reports of fascist and far-right symbols, 36 anti- Semitic, 20 anti- black.
The rest were a mix of islamophobic, homophobic, anti- Roma and anti- disabled incidents.

There is a link to download the report on the website if you're interested.

I wanted to know if there are some Poles on ontd_fb who could talk about what's going on with hooliganism, and if it is a real threat as regards Poland co-hosting Euro 2012 next summer. I didn't find more about what Donal Tusk said so I wondered if you guys could enlighten us on this crappy situation. Seriously I hope they find a way to solve this issue, it would totally suck if Poland had to give up on hosting Euro 2012 (even though I know it's unlikely but...oh well ! idk :/)

So, as a Pole, I don't think it will affect Euro2012. Yes, hooliganism is an issue in Poland, but remember the security will be much better for the Championship. Also, there were problems even before the cup's final, the police said that the stadium in Bydgoszcz is not suitable for such an event - keep in mind that stadiums in Warsaw, Poznań, Wrocław and Gdańsk are much better in terms of the security.
As I've said, it's nothing new - the government wasn't much concerned about the situation in Lithuania, which is quite upsetting, but they react now (hint hint, the elections will be held soon, also - Polish presidency in UE)...
I can assure you that the majority of Polish supporters are normal people and there shouldn't be any problems during the Euro (unless Mr Webb will referee our games, sigh).

(Sorry for any mistakes.)

that is awesome:) and trust me you will be safe, it was their fault they organized lech-legia game , 2 HUGE ENEMIES in some lame ass city Bydgoszcz on athletic stadium with shitty security, when a national team plays other kind of people go it is safe and even whole famies go there without fear

oh I'm sure it will be unforgettable (because we have no proper motorways~ jk jk), you'll feel welcome in Poland, we're quite friendly after all :)

i really don't think it is sooooo serious, everythink will be ok in the end, but as i've said - elections/presidency (fun fact: our PM is a Real Madrid fan)

have you seen "kill the referee" (about refereeing euro2008)? :)

haha, yes, he is, and one of the most known politician from his party supports Barca

it's a documentary about the referees, their families, UEFA etc. they focus mostly on Webb and our anger, really worth watching :)

it was mostly fault of Bydgoszcz security, as i said it was a fucked up idea to host a game there in the first place, i hate that city so maybe i not objective but i am right anyways

and like you said the polish supporters who will go on euro and people with money and other personal culture than hooligans

i am polish and sure it is some mess right now after Legia-Lech game but i am pretty sure Euro isn't in danger because of it, and Bydgoszcz stadium is a athletic one but a football one. It was a fucked up idea to have game there in the first place. And we have hooligans here but i don't think they will be going on Euro anyways so it should be safe. Hosting Euro is like the most importing thing in this country, we won't let taking this away. I am pretty sure Ukraine is in better condition than we are.

and about that: We found that hatred of Jews remains a point of principle for many fan groups in Poland, even though the Jewish is a tiny minority of the population.

yes this is true, it is so stupid and it always piss me off, since like forever Jew is the biggest insult and these people don't even know any jews or nothing about them, add racism and homofobia to that and it is polish mentality for you

right, the mentality of the majority is awful :| sadly, I think we got it from the communism

you can work in places like hotels, airports, stadiums and so on

tasks include ex. showing people where to go, working at the entrances, stalking the prayers (really, you can take care of the national team to some degree), dealing with press, transport, security (aka watching the games as a steward lol) etc.

I live near Lechia stadium in Gdansk [where the quarter finals will take place next year] and as [livejournal.com profile] ibuyu said - I'm afraid to go out before the match and right after. The hooliganism is an issue but for Euro2012 it will be sorted for sure. More stewards, policemen and in general - more people to help and much quicker proceedings as for the violation of the law will secure not only fans but tourists, players and all guests as well in our cities. I've never been at the match in Poland. I prefer going to London, I feel safe there. Mounted police, great security at the stadiums - that is what we need. Not exactly closing stadiums themselves. It's cheaper for the city [ofc] and for the club - maybe as well. But as I said - I don't think such accidents might happen during Euro or even affect the whole event. Special conditions need special resources and for us, as the host of the Euro the priority is safety for everyone.

hell. too many big words

From what I've seen on polish news etc it is not that extreme that we would have to give up co-hosting. I think the authorities will be able to keep it under control & they are focused on dealing with it.
I'm upset haven't been able to get tickets so far :(

I hope this issue will be sorted out.

I was watching the news couple days ago about a certain group of futbol fans in UKRAINE that does not want any non-Caucasian to ever step foot on any stadium in UKRAINE, not just footballers but also fans that are not Caucasian.

My brother and his friends are going over and planning to camp there and I'm a bit worried.

I know most Poles are nice but I hope he won't be attacked by the Polish hooligans when they are out and about dressed in German gear. We're not really popular in Poland and the Ukraine obviously.
