Roy Hodgson revealed his frustrations after Liverpool slipped to a 2-0 defeat in the Merseyside derby clash with Everton on Sunday afternoon.
Goals in each half from Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta secured local bragging rights for the Blues on a disappointing afternoon at Goodison Park.
Afterwards, Hodgson told reporters: "This was always going to be a difficult game to win.
"We suffered at the hands of an early onslaught, which you invariably do here at Goodison. They put us under pressure and made it difficult for us to get the ball, but towards the end of the first half we started to do better - we were starting to more than even the game out
"I thought the shape of the team was good and I thought the quality of our passing and moving was good today."
He continued: "We had plenty of the ball in the second half and we were camped out in their half of the field in the final third for large periods.
"I thought we caused them plenty of problems, but you're never going to get the really clear one-on-one chances when teams are defending a two-goal lead."
The timing of Arteta's goal in particular came as a blow to Liverpool in the early stages of the second period, and Hodgson admitted his team are culpable of conceding too many goals at the moment.
He said: "We are conceding too many goals and yet today I think we were a little bit unlucky to do so. Even in the good spell of pressure Everton had at the beginning, we weren't shipping goal chances.
"But it is a problem that we're letting in goals. We need to score goals to take pressure off the fact we could let them in, especially when you're playing with the sort of line-up we were at the end of the game.
"Good teams score goals and don't let many in and that's what we have got to be trying to do as well. We need to get better in both areas.
"In particular today, one could argue with all the possession we had in the second half and the time we had in the final third, we should have scored because the possibility was there."
The boss added: "We're not trying to disguise the fact this is a predicament or whatever word you want to use. For any team to take six points from eight games at the start of the season and go through that type of bad spell is a predicament. We don't in anyway try to deny that."
Though disappointed with the performance, Hodgson refuted suggestions from journalists his players are suffering from a lack of confidence.
He said: "I didn't see it (a lack of confidence) with Maxi Rodriguez, Gerrard, Meireles or any of the back players. I thought all of those showed plenty of confidence in themselves.
"Fernando (Torres) is going through a bad time, he needs a goal and his confidence is low.
"I wouldn't say it is a question of too many (players) lacking confidence, but people are playing under pressure. That's the bottom line.
"We've taken six points from eight games and every game we don't win, the pressure builds up even more. That will affect people's confidence in the long run."
Reporters quizzed the boss on whether he would be forced to reassess his target of a top-four finish following Liverpool's disappointing start to the campaign.
He replied: "There are 30 games to go and 90 points to play for. I don't know if I would write that off at the moment.
"It would take a really good run of four to five wins on the spin, but I thought there were signs in the game today and who knows, maybe we can get those four or five wins on the spin. That's what it is going to take."
Away from the pitch, New England Sports Ventures' Principal Owner John W Henry and Chairman Thomas Werner took in their first game as Liverpool owners from the directors' box.
Reporters asked Hodgson if he felt as though today's defeat could be classed as a missed opportunity to build on the surge of optimism following the sale to NESV on Friday.
He replied: "Yes, of course I feel that. This would have been the ideal opportunity to turn things around on the back of the entry of the new owners and the way that has been received by everyone. To get a result here and win the game would have been utopia.
"But I can only analyse the performance and there is no point in attempting to analyse dreams. The dream was we would come here on the back of new owners and win, but we had to play a game of football."
On NESV's involvement in the January transfer window, Hodgson added: "They're going to be very interested in doing that I think. It's still two and half months off and there is a lot of football to be played, so there is no point in us trying to put all our eggs into that basket.
"The first thing we have to do is start playing and winning matches. Hopefully we can do that and get ourselves in a better position, then if the owners can find a way to back us and improve the team in the transfer window we will obviously do so.
"Of course the January transfer window is something that interests us. We'll have to do our scouting work for future transfers like any other club, but it's not something that interests us in the coming weeks. What interests me is preparing for Napoli and Blackburn - a game we need to win."

Date: 2010-10-18 12:13 pm (UTC)That article doesn't include this gem:
Chippy and defensive after the game, he ended his press conference in a sharp exchange with a journalist from Scandinavia who questioned the lack of supply to Torres.
'Are you from Denmark?' Hodgson asked (he considers the Danish press too negative). 'No, Norway,' replied the visitor. 'Ah, two countries I never want to work in again,' he said.
There was a rather obvious retort but the room was too polite to go there. For now, anyway.
Not only is he tactically inept but he's an arrogant, deluded twat as well.

Date: 2010-10-18 12:20 pm (UTC)But again, even Rory Smith writes how it's Torres fault. If only Torres rediscovered his magical form of 3 years ago, we'd be flying apparently.
Considering he only got like 2 semi-good chances yesterday, I suppose in his magical form, he'll be able to make passes to himself and outplay 3-4 defenders. He's just that good!
If not Torres, then it's obviously Rafa's fault, but not Roy's, never Roy's.
"The two sides have different natural tendencies. Roy Hodgson likes his sides to sit back and quickly form two banks of four, waiting for opposition sides to come onto them before breaking up attacks in the last 20-30 yards of the pitch.
Everton are more proactive at winning the ball, pressing higher up the pitch with a more energetic form of defending. This style lent itself well to this fixture – a frenetic, high-tempo battle – and Everton were simply much better at putting pressure on Liverpool players and gaining possession in more advanced positions.
This can be observed in the Chalkboard below – Liverpool intercepted a pass only once in the opposition half, whilst Everton did so six times, four of which were in the opening twenty minutes. There are other ways to win possession through pressing, of course – by tackling or by forcing the opponents into misplaced passes, for example – but this shows the difference in mentality nicely."

Isn't this strategy awesome for Liverpool?

For those with a masochistic, this interview from the BBC, he looks happy in it and makes jokes (and sort of blame the players...)

Date: 2010-10-18 12:30 pm (UTC)Well apparently you can add Reina to the list. RAWK is in meltdown over it, more so than I've seen regarding Torres or Agger earlier this season.
I swear to god I will flip if our star of the past 2 seasons calls it a day with us before Roy gets his marching orders.

From:i wrote this yesterday and i can't believe i'm posting it but yeah...
Date: 2010-10-18 12:44 pm (UTC)i wrote it for someone but if you wanna read be my guest:
sometimes played with no-one present in the box, 45 minutes of defending our half cause we couldn't get the ball up. joe cole was in his own world, Torres played as a right winger again, Stevie played far back instead of inside the hole for half the game at least, cause no-one was there to bring the ball. Raul was passable, Lucas was alright but could have done better, Carra is getting too slow and his temper was over the top. Arteta's goal was probably goal of the week for me, beautiful strike. Carra refused to pass the ball to Maxi (who was free quite a few times), we played long balls for nothing at all, and there was no one in the box to actually score….. I can go on and on and on… actually I will…
We had a decent formation on paper, I was actually quite happy about it and was also thrilled albeit not so much about seeing Carra as RB because he's slow but still it was alright in my book. Logically we should’ve had some creativity in the midfield seeing as Raul Meireles finally played as CM and Stevie G was in the hole behind Torres with Joe Cole and Maxi in the wings… but the tactics choice was once again quite poor and left huge gaps everywhere. Again, I don’t know if it’s because the players are still used to Rafa’s methods, or it’s because we haven’t adapted to Roy’s style, but the players look lost on the pitch most of the time. It’s quite sad for me to say, but the best game we had this season was the opener against Arsenal and even then we didn’t look the sharpest…. Everything seemed to go downhill since then (maybe not in the Europa League but it’s starting to affect us there aswell).
It took us over 20 minutes today to actually create something and even then it led to a yellow card… I honestly have no idea what to say about that. This match is probably one of the worst Liverpool games I have ever seen in my life.
Joe Cole… my god where was he today? I honestly saw him touch the ball twice and even then it wasn’t brilliant. I’m trying to be patient, I really do, but he really doesn’t have any partnerships with anyone on the pitch, not even with Stevie G, a player he knows already from the National Team. It’s sad to see that he never really got back to himself after his injury but if he continues like that I hope we won’t keep him around for much longer. I could say the same about Poulsen actually, for whom I have no clue why Roy is insisting on starting every single PL game while he benches Lucas… just like against the Mancs for example. For me Poulsen should start from the bench til he gets used to the playing style and form some kind of partnership with the other players in the squad.
Stevie G, man I love him, he was everywhere. I felt sorry for him today cause he obviously tried to cover as much space as possible as the others failed to play decently but he couldn’t be everywhere at once no? we count on him a bit too much to save the day and he usually delivers but there’s a limit to what he can do in 90 minutes right? He was supposed to play behind Torres today but had to go down cause of the gaps we had, and because Everton played far better and kept attacking… shame really, cause I really wanted to see the Torres-Gerrard partnership again in all its glory (yeah I’m still missing the 07/08 and 08/09 seasons)
Our defence…. You know sometimes I feel sorry for Pepe because our defence is so average it hurts. Why is Roy refusing to play Agger? Why aren’t we getting a good left back? Why are we even insisting on playing Agger on the left anyway? Why have we gotten rid of Insua? Why the hell Carra was playing so high today seeing as he knows he’s not fast enough to go reac his position back? Why do we suck so much? So many questions, so little answers…
part 2
Date: 2010-10-18 12:44 pm (UTC)Where’s the creativity in our midfield? I thought we brought Raul and Milan for this! We suffered a huge blow when we lost Yossi and now we’re definitely feeling it. I think we have become the most uncreative club in PL as of now…. Well maybe not the worst, cause there are always Wolves and Stoke City who cannot create anything to save their lives but you get what I mean by that. I know money was the issue but that's not a full excuse because there are cheap players out there who are quality... look at Valencia for example! Quality players and most were definitely not expensive, Ever Banega, Jordi Alba, Aduriz, Juan Mata, Soldado... I can go on and on! But overall I don’t think our squad is that poor, we have some decent players on the bench that can help us win until the winter window.
Fernando… see I think he’s lacking confidence in himself ever since he got himself that knee injury but he’s not as bad as people make him sound he is (by people I mean the media as of usual, so called “experts” and some of the fans). When you have a midfield that doesn’t feed you any balls, no wonder he doesn’t score goals. He’s being playing as a right winger (honestly he has more assists than goals so far this season) for a few games now because no one is giving him any balls or crosses the ball to him while he’s in the box… which lead us to another problem really… Fernando cannot play on his own, he needs someone he can work with in the hole. We used to have Stevie G there and their partnership is brilliant but yeah….perhaps he needs a partner solely for striking and finishing, while Stevie can stay more behind and control and hand them the shots?
Speaking of the Europa League, realistically I feel that, the most we can do in the Prem this season is avoid getting relegated. We're out of the other tournaments and the most realistic chance for trophy glory we have this season is in the EL. However, come game time, I feel that Roy isn't presenting the best of Liverpool XI he can present. I know he may think that we do not need to tire out star players like Gerrard or Torres in a game against Bursaspor for example, but you've see what happens! We can lose in the away game, and end up winning in the home game, or concede a goal in the first half and then do our famous Liverpool comeback to win....I wish Roy would take this league more seriously, and PUT our best starting XI with our stars like Cole, Gerrard, Torres, Raul, all together on the pitch, as we are Liverpool FC, and we may be faring badly in the Prem, but we are not losing material to teams such as Steaua or Bursaspor.
and the end
Date: 2010-10-18 12:45 pm (UTC)Over all, the only decent players we had today were Pepe (I don’t blame him on the goals), Soti for actually trying, Skrtel besides the first goal error (whom I blame Carra for anyway) and Stevie for being his usual amazing self….
it was 2 pages long on Word haha *sighs* bravo to who ever bothers reading this
