If you really wanted me to I could make an attempt to explain it. But really it is no where near as thrilling as football. To much stopping and starting.

American football can be thrilling depending on the match up. Soccer can be boring at times as well. I nearly passed out during the World Cup final, but the Uruguay/Ghana match is what got me into the sport. It really depends on who's playing.

What? American football is so much easier to understand than soccer. I picked up on the general rules of the game within one match. I didn't know what a soccer offsides was for forever; I had to get a friend to explain. And it kills me that the player can run out of bounds and not be called on it as long as the ball stays in. Don't even get me started on the 'hand' balls that hits the shoulder. The horrible acting/diving had me all o.O when I first saw it. And the lack of instant replay is so stupid it hurts. And it bothers me that the clock never stops. lol

I'll try to give you a rudimentary explanation, and honestly, I don't know all the rules, I just watched in high school / catch the occasional college game. And the Superbowl, I watch the Superbowl.

Basically, if you have possession, you have four downs to move the ball ten yards. A down can be a tackle, or if you're forced out of bounds. If you move the ball ten yards, you keep possession and have another four downs to move ten yards. Touchdowns are worth six points. If you get a touchdown, your team can either try to kick the ball through the goal posts, which is one point, or go for the conversion, which is worth two points (like a mini-touchdown).

Wiki goes into more depth, but I hope that helped.
