A fresh start would have been nice, and there could have been no better moment. Laurent Blanc knew an opportunity when he saw one, and decided to "suspend" France's entire World Cup squad for his first match as head coach. Fabio Capello, by contrast, has merely reassembled the remnants of his Rustenburg rabble for what amounts to a lap of dishonour.

To read his projected team sheet for tomorrow's match is to feel the spirits slump. Better late than never for Joe Hart and Michael Dawson, who may play most of the match, and there is the promise of a glimpse of Jack Wilshere and Kieran Gibbs. But the continued presence in the starting line-up of Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Gareth Barry and Wayne Rooney, en bloc, shouts the message that there will be no cleansing of the Augean stables before the Euro 2012 qualifying campaign starts in September.

Deep down, Capello blames the players. That much is clear. So perhaps his decision to recall almost all of those responsible for the World Cup debacle for tomorrow's match is actually a gesture of ritual sacrifice before the genuine renewal can begin. Or maybe he just can't think of a better plan.

I am an England fan and I know that there are all these Arsenal youngsters banging on the door to get in. I'm pretty upset.

well it is their faults isn't it, they're the ones playing the game

and it's not like capello has players available from the youth systems in england. yes, they will eventually start to play the younger lads, but as the english know, there has been more than one mistake like robert green's in england's history.

they have to look at the youth sytems, and why their teams are not MENTALLY prepared to play the game on the international level. because we all know the english can play football, fact is they fucking invented the game. we know how good gerrard, lampard, rooney are, we've seen it, and yes i believe those fucking commercials.

but i think the pressure that the english public and the english sports media and general media put on the football team before they're even QUALIFIED is ridiculous. i mean, can they start winning these world cup commercials of them winning it in an epic victory AFTER they've won it in an epic victory in a world cup which we ALL KNOW would at least be making it to a SEMI FINAL.

c'mon england

it's mental, we all know there is talent in england, but it seems no manager is brave enough to pick the personalities to play, but why should he with the backlash of the english public so cruel. there is fear in this game. maybe foreign players thrive because its not their home, and they don't choose to believe it. maybe it's harder not to believe when you've been seeing the headlines since you were a little kid and then someone decides to talk about YOU. isn't that what you should also be preparing them for at the ACADEMIES. the lifestyle of being a footballer, the RESPONSIBILITY to your people for enabling you to have EVERYTHING. all one has to do in football is work as hard as they can toward their ultimate dream, and always be giving back for 10 years. now you become a multimillionaire, but in the old days pints and chicks were okay too. seriously, all they have to do is behave themselves, and play the game, and they could all have the life of their dreams. they can leave the other squish till after they retire and they're no longer directly representing their nation.

really, someone should have said this in the major papers by now. multiple multiple times.

Meh, idk. It's not like the pressure is any smaller in Brazil, and they're not prepared or trained for shit, but they still manage to win sometimes. I don't think there's really a clear formula.

"I guess it works as a public chastening."

I think that is actually the main point behind the decision, and Capello could have used this oportunity to please the crowd a bit, get the fans back on their side, but chose not to...

I don't think the entire English team needs to change, far from it, but this was a bad tactical move.

Perhaps I'm just biased as a Liverpool fan but comparing Steven Gerrard and John Terry's performances seems a bit silly. Terry was woeful as was Barry and Lampard to a lesser degree but without Gerrard's goal against USA there would have never been the opportunity to be embarrassed by Germany. But that's not answering the question, there is no hope as far as I'm concerned. I have resigned myself to a lifetime of England failures.

Terry was back and forth. He was not as woeful as we would want to believe, but he was just made to look like an absolute idiot against the Germans.

I'd not pick him for 2014 or 2012 even, but that's just me.

I don't see the reason for England to take the same approach as France. As for England, I truly beleive many things went wrong for them. They just didn't have a good WC. But their players have got the talent. For some reason, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Becks got injured (there goes nice long accurate crosses), Rio was injured (huge hit for defense), Gerrard and Lamps didn't start properly linking up til their final group stage game, Rooney just suddenly became uneffective, JT ended up making thr biggest mistake at the worst time possible (against Germany) and Lampards (world class) goal was disallowed. I'm sorry, I know we beat England. But we really lucked out. We're never gonna know what would have happened if that goal was allowed.

They had such a great qualifying campaign and it sucks that their WC campaign was the opposite. They'll get back their form.

IDK, I read this in the local paper this morning and it was of the opinion that it was pretty fair to make the players who were in SA face the music as it were. Knowing England fans, the team is gonna get a lot of stick and if it were a team completely made up of young players or players who weren't in SA, it'd be kind of unfair.

Meh, my 2p worth.

I was very disapointed when he kept the likes of Gerrard, Terry and Lampard in the squad. These players have had their chances at big competitions and failed on numerus occasions, then followed it up with the same bullshit in press conference afterwards. Its too much now, id much rather he followed the French team example and picked a totally different squad.
