Luciano Spalletti resigns as coach of Roma

The Roma coach Luciano Spalletti has left the club after four years in charge, according to reports in Italy. "I have given my resignation and the club have accepted it," the ANSA news agency reported him as saying this morning.

The 50-year-old Spalletti met club executives after Sunday's 3-1 home defeat to Juventus, the club's second loss this season. He had survived a dismal start to the 2008-9 campaign but came into the new season walking a fine line after the team's sixth-place finish which was not good enough to reach the Champions League.

Italian media has reported that Roma president Rosella Sensi has already met with the former Juventus and Chelsea coach Claudio Ranieri about filling the vacant role.

Roma fans were already disappointed following the club's failure to strengthen the attacking options in the squad following the sale of Alberto Aquilani to Liverpool for £20m. Defenders Nicolas Burdisso from Internazionale and Marco Motta from Udinese were the most significant buys. Injuries in the pre-season have also hindered Roma with Simone Perrotta, Juan and Cicinho all still recovering from muscular problems.

The new season got off on the wrong foot with a 3-2 defeat at Genoa followed by Sunday's defeat to Juventus. Roma will next travel to Siena on 13 September.

Anderlecht's Wasilewski suffers horror injury

(not for weak stomachs, slow-mo looks awful)

RSC Anderlecht's Marcin Wasilewski has suffered a horror injury after taking a brutal foul against Standard Liege on Sunday. The Polish international was left in agony after the collision with Liege midfielder Axel Witsel - which resulted in a double fracture of his right leg.

"We both went for the ball. I am not a violent player, I don't play football to break legs," insists Witsel who had not meant to harm his opponent.

The match ended in a 1-1 draw with Anderlecht staying on top of the Jupiler Pro League table.

"Wasilewski will later this week undergo two operations on his leg and will be back on the pitch after 10-12 months time." announced Anderlecht. 

Meanwhile, 'Wasyl' has told family and friends that he expects to be back and playing football hungrier then ever after experiencing such an injury.

"It may sound trite, but as the saying goes, what will not kill you only makes you stronger!" Wasilewski told his family.

After hearing the news about Wasilewski's almost career ending injury, Poland coach Leo Beenhakker told media on Monday that the FIFA World Cup 2010 Qualifier against Northern Ireland will be dedicated to the Polish left back.

"Something like this is not very easy to take in. We were counting on Marcin to play a part in the World Cup Qualifier's. The team will play against Northern Ireland for him." said Beenhakker.

Pawel Golanski from Romanian suit Steaua Bucureşti has been called up to replace Wasilewski on the Polish national team.

Bojan Krkic to miss 2-3 weeks with hamstring injury

FC Barcelona striker Bojan Krkic was key in the 3-0 win over Sporting Gijon this evening scoring his first goal of the 2009/2010 season but unfortunately suffered an injury late in the match.

Bojan was injured in the 80th minute when he was going for the ball and lost his footing. Immediately following the match Bojan underwent a medical and it was discovered that he had suffered a muscle tear and will need to be sidelined for fifteen to twenty days. The team will be off for the international break before their second La Liga match on September 13 against Getafe.

In other injury news defensive back Maxwell was also substituted after suffering an injury in the 57th minute of the match. Medical results after the match showed that Maxwell had not suffered any damage and would be able to return to the team after a few days rest.

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has been charged with improper conduct by the Football Association.

The charge relates to the comments made by Benitez immediately after his side's opening day 2-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham on 16 August.

Benitez was angry that Liverpool were denied two penalties at White Hart Lane and after the game said: "The decisions were very poor."

The Spaniard has until 15 September to respond to the charge.

Liverpool assistant manager Sammy Lee was also charged with improper conduct for his behaviour during the same match.

Lee, 50, was sent to the stands for continued protests toward fourth official Stuart Attwell.

Very interesting article on early marriages on football

Hey people

I just found out some interesting article about the reasons why  football players usually got married early. As you might know, Torsten Frings has announced some days ago that he and his wife Petra are separated - at least temporarily.

They make some reference to Torsten and Petra marriage as well, in a quite balanced way. They interviewed some specialists who claim that it's very interesting to the clubs having young married football players.

Since here we have total interest about the football way of life, I think that it could be interesting for some of you.

Uefa bans Eduardo for two matches

Arsenal striker Eduardo has been banned for two games by Uefa for diving to win a penalty against Celtic last week.

The Croatian international was found guilty of deceiving referee Manuel Gonzalez as he fell under the challenge of goalkeeper Artur Boruc.

Arsenal, leading 2-0 on aggregate at the time, went on to win the two-leg tie 5-1 and progress into the Champions League group stages.

Eduardo will miss his side's matches against Standard Liege and Olympiakos.

Arsenal have three days to appeal against Uefa's decision.

We've cried tears, we've jumped off some cliffs, we've sent death threats to Perez and we've broken our fingers from constantly refreshing BBC text. Us North Americans were rubbing our eyes and pinching ourselves when we saw the Ronaldo saga reported on our local news. A soccer player? On American TV? What? Then later that evening, Paris Hilton and Cristiano Ronaldo hooked up and a pandemic was expected to start. But somehow we made it!

The season has started for all the major leagues, yet I still can't grasp that all those transfers, swap deals and Sergio's green pants actually happened. It's September, which means a new beginning for not only soccer, but for a bunch of us with our academic commitments and stuff. But let's take one last look back on the most chaotic transfer window in history, so we can tell ours kids in the future. When we're WAGs of course.

Witsel gets 3 months suspension

You probably have all seen the horrible images of what happened last sunday night in Belgium, during the "clasico" game Anderlecht-Standard. I won't post the video again because i've seen it more than i wanted and it was posted earlier today. For those who are not familiar with the situation, well it was footballers gone wild night, and Marcin Wasilewski (Anderlecht) got his leg broken crushed in a nasty tackle made by Axel Witsel (Standard).

Wasilewski will be out for 10 to 12 months. It's horrible and i hope he'll be back to his best.

Today, Witsel's sentence was announced and he's now suspended until the 23rd november. That means he's going to miss 10 Championship games and one for the Cup. He also has to pay 2.500 euros.
As the case will be transmitted to the Fifa and the UEFA, he's likely to miss CL games too (probably 4).

IMO, this is a "severe" punishment (for lack of better words), but I think it's fair. He needs to be punished because it was wrong. I find it unfortunate that the club has appealed.

What i don't accept is the way this whole thing has been treated by the press. Witsel's only 20 years old and up until a few days ago he was Belgium's latest prodigy. Now he's a criminal. He's really been treated that way, especially by the Anderlecht's supporters (that i could understand) and by every media. I mean it has been called "a crime, an act of aggression, an attack (as in assassination attempt)" and so on.

This kind of tackle can be seen every week-end. Thanksfully, they don't all have the same outcome. But if this one had not turned out to be so dramatic, nobody would have cared. It's not fair for him to be punished for the consequence rather than for what he did. Does this mean that you can do whatever you want on the pitch, as long as no one gets seriously injured ?

Okay, sorry to have bothered you with such boring deep-thinking :D I just wanted to have your opinions, since this is a player i like (Witsel) i guess i might be biased.
