Liverpool FC's Albert Riera destroys Spartak Moscow move

Albert Riera has killed his World Cup dream by pricing himself out of a move to Spartak Moscow, it has been revealed by the Russian club's manager.

The Spain international, 27, has become an outcast at Liverpool after launching a broadside in a radio interview, describing the club as a 'sinking ship' and castigating manager Rafael Benitez for what he believes is poor man management by his compatriot.

After publicly accusing Benitez of destroying his hopes of representing his country in South Africa, it appears that the former Espanyol winger has done exactly the same thing by demanding a lucrative salary which was double his current earnings at Anfield.

A move to Russia appeared to be the only redeemable option for Riera, but Spartak coach Valery Karpin confirmed that talks had broken down due to the player's excessive wage demands.

He said: "I can tell you why the transfer didn't happen. I understand that the player wanted to have some match practice before the World Cup.

"In this situation, I would have even agreed to play free of charge. But Riera wanted to go to Spartak in order to hit the jackpot.

"We made him understand that this wouldn't happen with us. I can say that there will be no acquisitions before the transfer window closes."

With the Russian window is set to close tomorrow, it appears that Riera will spend the remaining two months of the current campaign on the sidelines, leaving his World Cup dream in tatters.
