what is the most popular sport in the us? baseball, american football and basket ball all seem very popular but is there one which is more popular then the others? like in england, it's football by a mile.

whenever I want to say baseball or basketball is, I remind myself of the Super Bowl and say that American football is the most popular sport here. From the high school level, college football and professional football, it seems to be the most loved sport in the US imo. Sadly my city doesn't have a football team (though we're the second largest in the US, population-wise!! /bitter) but I can still feel the impact of the sport. I think baseball is the second most popular with basketball being a very close third... though I can see it arguably being second instead!

That's a rather complicated question. (Gridiron) football gets the most television viewers, but baseball gets the most ticket sales (but then again, it has a longer season). From my own view those two sports generally top basketball, but between them I don't think you can make much of a distinction (but I think baseball is often romantically viewed as America's sport). If you look beyond professional leagues to college level (football and basketball specifically-- not really baseball), then it adds another layer of complications. A lot of big college teams have cult-like followings from alumna passing it down through their families--it's really intense.

Long comment is long but I think it's an interesting question :)

American football, without a doubt. The Super Bowl is always the most watched program in the country and the college football championship gets huge ratings. For basketball, it honestly depends on region. I'm from a state that's huge on college basketball but could care less about the NBA, but it's different for others. Baseball's popularity comes more from attending the games than watching them on TV, except for the World Series.

The pecking order is usually American Football, Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, then Soccer.

Well, baseball is seen as America's past time. But then you have NFL and the Superbowl, plus college level football. And the NBA plus college level basketball (March Madness). Idk, I'd say that it's tied between them, and based on people's preferences.

i think it's definitely american football which is sad. i think american football is an excuse for people to get paid millions to tackle each other. and i'm putting that nicely.

Re: can i ask you american bbs a question?

[identity profile] stuffwedid.livejournal.com 2011-02-10 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? :( Because you could argue that soccer is just an excuse for a couple of guys to kick a ball around. Or basketball is just a couple of guys dribbling.

Honestly, American football is a lot more tactical that most people give it credit for being. Its biggest fault is how often the play stops, but there's a lot more action in it than a lot of other sports (soccer included) and it's just plain fun to watch with a lot of friends.

Oh I know! You could argue this from any angle about any sport. I was just stating my opinion. Trust me, I know there are people who think soccer is just that as well as basketball.

I know how American football works and how tactical is. I grew up watching it whether on tv or through going to my brothers games. I just don't like it and am merely stating my opinion.

lolwut

You can say the same exact thing about football too.

You can say it about every sport tbh. But I was just stating my opinion. I hate american football. I understand the game fine, I just think it's pointless. Just like people think soccer is pointless. Again, it's merely my opinion and no one has to agree.

lol That's fine, I'm not mad. I just thought it was a little weird, that's all :3 <3

Gridiron is hardly just a bunch of tackling. If you go out on that field with only tackling in mind, you'll get nothing done and players will push right pass your tackles and keep it moving all the way to the goal line.

I understand the game fine, I just think it's pointless. Like I said, I've grown up watching it, just like almost every other American. Just like people think soccer is pointless. Again, it's merely my opinion and no one has to agree.

So I assume you don't get annoyed if people say football is stupid because it's guys getting payed millions to kick a ball around a field?

Re: can i ask you american bbs a question?

[identity profile] adorante.livejournal.com 2011-02-11 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
I do get annoyed, but it's their opinion and I'm not going to contest it.

I think it's ridiculous that athletes get paid so much when, for an example, teachers don't get paid a lot.

Again, merely stating an opinion. I didn't ask for anyone to agree/disagree

I think it depends on where you live in the US, but overall I would say football just edges the other two.

Across the nation as a whole, I'd say gridiron.

nfl is BY FAR AND AWAY the biggest sport. doesn't matter where you live. nfl is the king of the sports in the usa. it makes so much buck it's pathetic. it gets the highest ratings on tv.

after that it's college football. the crowds you find on a saturday night in the sec are one of the few things that comes close to european football fans.

then i'd say the nba. college basketball is better and where it is at.

baseball isn't as big as it once was. then you have nascar. nhl use to be big but then the lockout fucked it up. it's slowly coming back.

soccer is an ever growing thing here. the better our national team does the more people pay attention to the other leagues. a lot of people started to watch the epl after we made england cry at the wc trololo

sad but tru the mls isn't really a 3rd tier sport that people watch. epl games get better ratings. for espn.
