Liverpool didn't try to back out, they just said they would only sell him for a reasonable amount of money that reflected his worth (which is what he agreed to a year earlier). Then barca offered £12m which was just ridiculous and he apparently decided to pull out of a really important match just a couple of hours before kick-off. Which is a bit of a shit move.
