Ricardo Carvalho to sign for Real Madrid.

Real Madrid have agreed a fee of €8 million for Chelsea defender Ricardo Carvalho.

Ricardo Carvalho has seen his first-team chances reduce

The Blues confirmed they have agreed terms for the sale of the Portugal international defender, while Madrid revealed Carvalho will join on a two-year deal.

A Chelsea statement read: "Chelsea Football Club can confirm it has agreed terms with Real Madrid for the transfer of Ricardo Carvalho.

"The transfer is subject to a medical and the player agreeing personal terms.

"Chelsea would like to thank Riccy for his six years of service, and we wish him well in his future career."

At the weekend, Jose Mourinho suggested that Carvalho's advancing years meant he was unlikely to link up once again with the defender, who under the new Real coach won the 2004 Champions League with Porto and two Premier League titles with Chelsea.

However, Real saw their bid to sign Inter Milan right-back Maicon collapse and while Benfica's David Luiz and AC Milan's Thiago Silva were alternative targets, they appear to have turned to Carvalho in an effort to improve their defence.

The Portugal international picked up a third Premier League title last season but has seen his first-team chances reduce in recent seasons, with Brazilian defender Alex finding favour under Guus Hiddink and then Carlo Ancelotti.

Best known for his perfect positioning, his foresight and his ability to advance the ball out of the first third, Ricardo Alberto Silveira Carvalho (18-05-78 Amarante, Portugal) joins Real Madrid at the age of 32 and with 19 titles to speak of.

at least it's not another midfielder.

it's not my ideal situation but considering Pepe's and even Albiol's current injuries, I can understand the thinking behind it. And I'll take €8 mill Carvalho over €28 mill Maicon and his dumb agent any day.

Just don't forget about him:

although I think we really should be worrying about Garay.

Come to think of it... OMG YES Welcome to Real Madrid, Carvalho! LOL

Now we need to sell people especially you-know-who.

Mourinho must be determined to have Carvalho witness most of his coaching career firsthand, it seems!

Not all too bad for that price. For that price, mind.

I've had the chance to see him play right in front of my nose for half a game last week and both my friends and I agreed that he's been probably the best of the blue lot for that half.

So, Segio is now set for central defense together with Pepe? Hmm. Hmmmmmmm...

It IS a long season, but I still doubt Albiol and Arbeloa will be too thrilled.

A capable LEFTback would be something constructive for a change.

I'm worried about his form more so than his age. Lucio, JT, even Maicon are right around the same age.

Hasn't he had injury problems at Chelsea? That worries me more.

Sergio's at RB, Carvalho is at CB. but other than that, I agree with everything here. lol

I'm "new" to football only in the sense that I've only been paying attention for a couple years, and it seems like a lot of players I came to know on Chelsea are leaving. :/

I really wish he wasn't leaving, but I'm still upset about Ballack that this doesn't hurt as much, but it still hurts.

Rather surprised me when I saw this on twitter. I'm not sure I remember hearing about this before, but it does sound familiar.

Anyways, has Chelsea signed anyone (besides Benayoun)? I mean they lost Ballack, Joe Cole, Deco, and now Carvalho. Are they just going to bring players up from the reserves?

Hmmm Who are Real Madrid defenders?

[identity profile] bluemeadow13.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
omg :(
i guess that's why Carlo didn't play him against utd on sunday

[identity profile] jada-casi1.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, he's been inconsistent recently so that really worries me... unless Jose has some magic on his sleeves to get him back into his old form.

[identity profile] superbanane.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't like him D:
not that anyone cares but still :/

[identity profile] sashaj22.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
sergio, albiol, arbeloa, garay, pepe, carvalho, and I guess you can count Marcelo as one too. and san iker

[identity profile] bismarcksotto.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, my bad then!

He must have been used out of position for that half then since he was clearly hoofing up and down the flank against us. I remembered him from my time in England as a CB, too, but wasn't all too sure about that anymore since a few years have passed since then. Makes a hell of a lot more sense to buy a CB backup, too, as we've lost one of those over the summer.

[identity profile] julialonso.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Then I can say he is welcome :)

He could play with Pepe, or both play the same side?

[identity profile] sashaj22.livejournal.com 2010-08-10 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
like I said over at hala; I read he might go (on loan) to Racing. LOL I would not complain...

I must be the only person who wants Maicon to stay at Inter.
