Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez ready to risk wrath of Everton with move for Steven Pienaar

Liverpool are ready to risk the wrath of neighbours Everton with a move for influential midfielder Steven Pienaar.

The skilful South African has emerged as one of the best players in the Premier League but his contract runs out in 14 months and Everton are yet to tie him down to a new deal.

Sportsmail revealed in January that Tottenham and Chelsea were interested in the 28-year-old, valued at about £10million.

Now Liverpool have emerged as strong admirers, despite Everton's reluctance to sell to their fiercest rivals. The Anfield club have been encouraged by news of the unresolved contract talks, although Everton are preparing a new offer that would put Pienaar on a par with their top earners at about £50,000 per week.

Pienaar's agent Ivan Modia said: 'Steven's future will be sorted before the World Cup.'

Everton manager David Moyes warned: 'Pienaar is at a club that really suits him and sometimes a player has to decide what is best for him. Everton has been good for Steven. If anybody wanted to leave, they'd be poorer for it.'

ESPN'S TOP 50 PLAYERS GOING TO THE WC

1 Lionel Messi

Country Argentina
Club Barcelona
NT 41 games, 13 goals

Lionel Messi is the best player in the world in every aspect, and perhaps the best of all times. With only 22 years old, Messi has already won everything he could, individually and with his club. However, the only thing he's in debt with is with Argentina's NT, even after the gold medal achieved in the Olympics. Messi's game is supported on his ability to be unpredictable and his excellent ball control, what allows him to do whatever he wants. With only 1,62 mts tall, he's also good with his head. In his club, Barcelona, he's an important player and in the last years, the problem Messi has had to face is that he can't do the same with his NT. In great part, this is responsibility of Diego Maradona, who refuses to place him in his natural position - the right side, with space to move inside - and instead puts him behind another striker. Maradona, one of the best players of all times, named Messi as his heir in Argentina, a title that has been disastrous for everyone else that has been named like that by the actual coach of Argentina's NT.

• Balotelli threw his shirt on floor at end of 3-1 victory
• Mourinho says forward will be in squad for Atalanta game

Mario Balotelli, Champions League, Inter v Barcelona

José Mourinho says Mario Balotelli will play in Internazionale's next match despite his show of petulance at the end of last night's 3-1 Champions League win over Barcelona. Balotelli replaced Diego Milito in the 75th minute of last night's game but angered the home support by giving the ball away cheaply and then gesturing angrily at the crowd after shooting wide.

At the end of the game Balotelli threw his shirt on the floor before storming down the tunnel, and Mourinho was quick to condemn the player's actions.

"I am sorry that the fans were like that with Balotelli," said Mourinho. "I always want my fans to be with my players right to the end. But, in the end, I can understand them because they saw the same thing as me.

"They saw a team which was dead, exhausted after all their efforts.

"(Goran) Pandev had cramp. I couldn't make any more changes. The team was destructed and then you see (Cristian) Chivu come on and do everything, (Dejan) Stankovic come on and do everything, and then Mario comes on with this attitude."

Balotelli's relationship with his team has long been a fractious one. He was frozen out of the first team for several weeks by Mourinho during a protracted row over the player's attitude to training and has upset Inter's fans in the past by declaring himself to be an AC Milan fan, a situation that was exacerbated when he was secretly filmed pulling on that team's shirt by the TV show Striscia La Notizia last month.

Man City And Tottenham Reveal New York Dates As Part Of US Tour

Only one club will be competing in the Champions League next season, but it seems both Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City will be heading to New York as part of their preparations for the new campaign.

Having already revealed their intention to tour the United States, the two Premier League clubs announced on Wednesday that as part of their respective pre-season tours they will take part in a four-day tournament from July 21 to 25 in the Big Apple with hosts New York Red Bulls and Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.

Both sides are scheduled to play two games as part of the 'New York Football Challenge', which will all take place at Red Bull Arena.

Despite uncertainty over his long-term future at Eastlands, Roberto Mancini is looking forward to the games as perfect preparation for the 2010-11 season.

“We have big ambitions for the Premier League next season, and this tournament will give us the perfect opportunity to prepare for our season with some highly competitive games, enthusiastic supporters and world class facilities," Mancini said on his club's official website.

“It will be fantastic for us to visit the United States, and especially for us to visit New York during our tour of the East Coast."

Exact details of the dates of individual fixtures will be released "in due course", according to the club.
